By using subjective pitches, a tonal system with simple harmonic partials (the flute) could be compared with a tonal system with complex inharmonic partials (the bell). We argue that the underlying musical scales of the bell ensemble and the flute are closely related and lie between an unequal-interval pure-system scale and the just-intonation scale. There is some evidence that a least interval of 60 or 66 cents figures in the flute scale, that both flute and bell scales include a 90-cent interval and a true (1,200-cent) octave, and that neither scale includes a 100-cent interval. Since there is a true octave, the scales cannot be cycles of fifths, and since there is no equal-temperament half-tone (100 cents), the scales cannot be equal in temperament. We conclude that the flute and Zhou bell scales are very similar if not the same. Apparently, strong cultural traditions and human perceptual constancies united to sustain a common flexible musical scale during 2,400 years.","PeriodicalId":19838,"journal":{"name":"Perception & Psychophysics","volume":"67 1","pages":"547-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74111731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The frequency of the vibratory stimulus was either 15 or 250 Hz. The sinusoidal stimuli applied through a 3.0‐cm2 contractor were 700 ms in duration and had rise‐fall times of 25 ms. Stimulus amplitude was measured with a calibrated accelerometer mounted on the moving element of the vibrator. Data were plotted as a function of successive days in the menstrual cycle. Thresholds for the detection of the 15‐Hz stimulus did not significantly change over the menstrual cycle. Thresholds for detecting the 250‐Hz stimulus, on the other hand, varied significantly over the menstrual cycle. The 250‐Hz threshold became progressively lower as subjects approached the onset of menstruation. After the onset of menstruation, the 250‐Hz threshold gradually increased reaching a maximum value approximately 12 or 13 days later. Results showed that the anterior dorsum of the tongue can produce suprathreshold magnitude functions compatible with those described in the literature, but with a steeper slope value. The steeper slopes can be related to the psychophysical method employed, the use of a small skin contactor, the use of a rigid surround around the contactor, and the physiological nature of the tongue itself. It was also determined that women produce slightly different lingual suprathreshold magnitude curves than men. The upper slope value for the women is similar to that for the men, but the lower slope of the magnitude curve is somewhat steeper indicating that if women and men are presented with the same stimulus amplitude, the women will perceive it as being slightly greater.","PeriodicalId":19838,"journal":{"name":"Perception & Psychophysics","volume":"7 1","pages":"93-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84179464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deletion intervals, which were centered about the syllable midpoint, ranged from 60% to 90% of the syllable duration and contained either silence or broadband noise. In one condition, the three syllable types were /did/, /ded/, and /dud/; in the other condition, the three syllable types were /did/, /ded/, and/dAdV. Identification performance in the 60% and 70% deletion conditions was not substantially worse than for full syllables. Even the 90% deletion conditions yielded performance well above chance, indicating that significant coarticulatory information for vowels is contained in the first and last 10 or 15 msec of the syllable. For the short-vowel stimuli (/did/, /d∈d/, and /dλV) in the 90% deletion condition, a series of discriminant analyses were performed to assess the relative contribution of several acoustic variables to the statistical separation of the vowel categories. Several different combinations of acoustic variables (including formant frequencies at particular temporal locations and formant frequency differences over time) were sufficient to yield significant separation of the three vowel categories. However, in general, the performance of the discriminant classification program correlated only weakly with the identification performance of the listeners.","PeriodicalId":19838,"journal":{"name":"Perception & Psychophysics","volume":"29 1","pages":"369-80"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89489111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To demonstrate this perceptual context effect, the CV portions of natural tokens of [al-da], [al-ga], [ar-da], [ar-ga] were excised and replaced with closely matched synthetic stimuli drawn from a [da]-[ga] continuum. The resulting hybrid disyllables were then presented to listeners who labeled both liquids and stops. The natural CV portions had two different effects on perception of the synthetic CVs. First, there was an effect of liquid category: Listeners perceived “g” more often in the context of [al] than in that of [ar]. Second, there was an effect due to tokens of [al] and [ar] having been produced before [da] or [ga]: More “g” percepts occurred when stops followed liquids that had been produced before [g]. A hypothesis that each of these perceptual effects finds a parallel in speech production is supported by spectrograms of the original utterances. Here, it seems, is another instance in which findings in speech perception reflect compensation for coarticulation during speech production.","PeriodicalId":19838,"journal":{"name":"Perception & Psychophysics","volume":"7 1","pages":"407-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84956307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The frequency differences between tones ranged from 1/24 to 2 1/2 octaves. Judgments of stream segregation show large intersubject variability, whereas gap thresholds are comparatively stable. Gap thresholds and streaming judgments are both affected by the frequency separation between tones. However, only streaming judgments are affected by presentation rate. Gap-threshold functions show no discontinuities or plateaus with increasing frequency differences and faster presentation rates. These results suggest that stream segregation is not a primary factor limiting gap-discrimination performance in tonal sequences.","PeriodicalId":19838,"journal":{"name":"Perception & Psychophysics","volume":"1 1","pages":"493-501"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79784205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
