The disease has been described as early as from the 1838. It was not until 1954 when Dr. Gorham and Dr. Stout explained GSD. The aetiology of GSD is not well understood with no concrete evidence of genetic or environmental causes. GSD has also shown no obvious race or age predilection. Unfortunately there is not preventive treatment for GDS patient. Management of GSD are focused on palliative care.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"28 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139315889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The commonest primary bone malignancy is osteosarcoma which the frequency had increased by 0.3% yearly over the last decade. Improvement in treatment of bone sarcoma by multidisplinary protocols involving diagnostic imaging, chemotherapy and surgical technique has improved the survival rate from 20% to 80%, hence paradigm of treatment shifted from amputation to limb preserving surgery. Bone reconstruction techniques varies from prosthetic replacement, allograft and bone autograft method. Bone autograft method needed sterilizing technique to devitalised tumour cells and pasteurization is a good option in maintaining its biomorphogenic properties when heated to 60°C -70°C for 30-40 minutes. This article will be discussing on histopathology findings, biomechanical outcome and clinical outcome of bone reconstruction using pasteurized autograft bone method. The advantages of pasteurization include less risk of disease transmission, no risk of allogenic immunogenicity, readily available, simple, less expensive and satisfactory bone remodelling. However, in certain cases it also shows deteriorating outcome in long term follow up due to issues with graft fracture, infection and resorption.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"31 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our study aimed to develop and validate a new tool to measure the knowledge, attitude, and practice of COVID-19 control and preventive measures among adults in Terengganu, Malaysia. A questionnaire was developed through theoretical research and expert consultations. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 670 staff and students of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Terengganu recruited by convenient sampling. Validity and reliability were analysed. The validity of the knowledge domain was determined through Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis which revealed 26 items derived from six categories: etiology, symptoms, mode of transmission, risk factor for infection, and high-risk group. The construct validity of the attitude domain was determined through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) revealed 34 items that lead to seven factors: fear, responsibility, movement restriction, information, quarantine, screening, medium for information. Construct validity of the practice domain revealed 16 items that loaded to three factors: hand washing, movement restriction and mask-wearing. Among the key findings of this study was high level of knowledge of respondents regarding specific situations and activities and respondents agreed that the most effective way to receive information was via television casting. The questionnaire was shown to have satisfying psychometric properties and can be used as a tool in future research in public knowledge, attitude and practice to control and prevent COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117075656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ASD is a complex disease involving genetic and environmental factors. Environmental risk factors identified include gestational exposure to pollution, pesticides, maternal infections, and inflammation. Genetic mutations account for about 10 – 20% of ASD cases. Based on the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in the United States, 1 in 68 children are affected with ASD. Recent advancements in genetic technologies have enabled the detection of biomarkers for the early detection of diseases and risk identification. Aim: This meta-analysis aims to determine the gene signatures involved in ASD. We conducted a meta-analysis to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in ASD microarray datasets comprising 122 ASD and 89 control peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) and whole blood samples from two microarray studies. We performed gene ontology, pathway enrichment, and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis to identify associations between autism and altered gene expression levels. At a false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.05, we identified 1862 DEGs; 1056 genes were upregulated, and 806 genes were downregulated. DEGs revealed that dysregulated genes were significantly enriched in the “Primary immunodeficiency pathway”, “Influenzae A”, “Epstein-Barr virus infection pathway”, and other signalling pathways from the analyses using Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment. Subsequently, protein-protein interactions (PPI) analysis identified SUMO1, SP1, EGR1, EP300, and VHL as hub genes to be the potential biomarkers for ASD. In total, eighteen differentially expressed hub genes could potentially be used as potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of ASD.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124768161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From the perspective of a urologist or a pathologist, benign urethral lesions may mimic cancer. However, due to the rarity of urethral neoplasms, it can be challenging to finalise the definitive diagnosis. We presented the case of a 53-year-old gentleman, a chronic smoker with a history of painless haematuria for three weeks associated with incomplete voiding and urinary frequency. Cystoscopy revealed fluffy, polypoid tissues over the prostatic urethra. Clinically, urothelial carcinoma cannot be excluded. Interestingly, the histopathological assessment revealed a case of urothelial papilloma. An illustration of the diagnostic approach based on solitary polypoid lesions and papillary neoplasms from the urethra was elaborated. The salient features of each disease spectrum were also highlighted. A pathological approach in conjunction with clinical and radiological findings may help correctly recognise urethral pathology.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130103831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
