The idiopathic form of RPF, also known as Ormond’s disease, is more common and makes up about 75% of the case. Here, we are presenting a case of a woman who was referred to our center due to worsening serum creatinine and was diagnosed with retroperitoneal fibrosis. This case has been taken up due to the rarity of the case and to discuss the radiological appearance specifically the CT appearance of retroperitoneal fibrosis. We have also discussed methods to differentiate between primary and secondary retroperitoneal fibrosis specifically based on CT findings. This is to provide guidance for the diagnosis and prompt management of cases, especially in district hospitals with no advanced diagnostic equipment such as MRI or the ability to biopsy.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"31 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its management can be challenging because of its prevalence in high-risk individuals. This study was designed to review the management and outcome of all patients admitted with sigmoid volvulus. Methods A retrospective review of all patients admitted at Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah, Terengganu, for Sigmoid Volvulus from January 2015 to December 2022 was performed. The data was extracted from Hospital Information System (HIS) and analysed using SPSS 27. Results Twenty-four patients were admitted, a total of 41 admissions for sigmoid volvulus during the study periods. The majority of the patients (n=16, 66.7%) were male and (n=8,33.3%) were female. Seven (29.2%) patients underwent emergency surgery on the presentation, and three (12.5%) patients died on admission due to septic shock. The remaining 14 (58.3%) were managed by endoscopic decompression. 13 (92.9%) patients had successful decompression procedures, and one patient (7.1%) failed, which required emergency surgery. About seven patients (53.8%) were readmitted for recurrence of sigmoid volvulus after successful decompression on initial admission, in which subsequently all of them required emergency surgery. The remaining six (46.2%) did not experience any recurrence episodes, and three (50%) of them underwent subsequent elective surgery. In our series, three patients died on initial presentation due to perforation and septic shock without any intervention, two patients died after emergency surgery due to septic shock and multi-organ failure, and one patient died due to covid 19 pneumonia. There was no mortality after elective surgery. Conclusion Sigmoid volvulus is a surgical emergency in which the majority (58.3%) can be successfully decompressed non-operatively. Emergency surgery in these patients is associated with 13.3% mortality in our series. Elective definitive surgery is suggested in view of the high recurrence rate (>50%) and considerable risk of emergency surgery.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"19 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to determine the level of nutrition knowledge, attitude, and practice (NKAP), level of self-efficacy of healthy eating, and their relationship with body mass index (BMI) among undergraduate students in USM Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.Study Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 107 undergraduate students aged 19 to 28 years old, selected using convenience sampling in USM Kubang Kerian, Kelantan from August 2021 until October 2021. A self-administered questionnaire including the KAP questionnaire and self-efficacy of the healthy eating scale was distributed to the participants via Google Form. Findings: The prevalence of good knowledge was 95.3%, good attitude was 79.4% but good practice was only 36.4%. Overall, the prevalence of nutrition knowledge, attitude, and practice (NKAP) was good at 82.2%. The total median score of self-efficacies in healthy eating was 28.0 (7.0). A significant association was found between the availability of healthy and unhealthy foods with practice (p=0.012, p=0.019). Moreover, a significant association was found between age and awareness of the Malaysian Food Pyramid with NKAP (p=0.039, p=0.005 respectively). Hence, a significant association was found between NKAP and self-efficacy of healthy eating (p=0.008). However, the present study revealed that there was no significant association between NKAP with BMI, and self-efficacy of healthy eating with BMI (p=0.541, p=0.064).Conclusion: We found that having good nutrition knowledge and attitude alone was insufficient for the changes in individuals' healthy eating practices as most university students had suboptimal eating behaviour in their daily lifestyle. Therefore, strategies were needed to practice good and healthy eating among university students.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current therapies are either incapable against certain cancers or impeding to the patients, which diminishes their personal satisfaction. The utilization of nanoparticles in cancer treatment might possibly increment patient endurance, decrease secondary effects and diminish death rates. The fundamental constraint of current therapeutics is an absence of explicitness in conveyance as they target normal cells too. The advancement of nanoscale carriers can possibly defeat both fundamental and growth hindrances as well as give explicit, designated conveyance. This study also aims to focus on the therapeutic strategies in which different types of nanoparticles have been discussed comprehensively. Moreover, cancer nanomedicines have also been addressed in the end to highlight some more possible therapeutic measures.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prime belief of the society that vape is a safe alternative to smoking is completely mistaken. The fact that vaping is not less harmless than smoking needs to be widely disseminated. Vape does contain harmful chemicals i.e. nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerol and few others that aren’t listed on the pack. These chemicals when inhale can lead to serious respiratory problems including lung injuries (EVALI), pneumonia, pneumothorax and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).  Apart from that, nicotine can cause addiction, poisoning and prolong use of nicotine can lead to increased risk of heart disease, suppress immune system, DNA mutation and brain development retardation. Inadvertent intraventricular perforation of a pericardiocentesis catheter is an uncommon yet a known complication of the procedure. Failure to establish adequate hemostasis during the removal of the foreign body could be catastrophic. Generically, puncture of a pericardiocentesis catheter into the ventricular space is tolerable, but the failure to achieve hemostasis in the ventricular wall amounts to injurious effects accounted to the size and caliber of the drain. Here we describe a case in which a pigtail catheter (8F) accidentally penetrated the left ventricle while attempting to drain pericardial effusion. The patient was brought to the surgical theater where the cardiac surgeon performed an off-pump left anterolateral thoracotomy and extracted the drain successfully. Pledgetted sutures (Prolene 3-0) were placed under tension and the knots were placed, thereby achieving excellent hemostasis of entry point of perforation. During the postoperative course, neither the x-ray of the chest nor an echocardiograph demonstrated hemothorax or pericardial tamponade. Five days later, the patient was discharged from our hospital.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"244 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cause of knee pain varies, from overuse syndrome to inflammatory diseases. The Osgood-Schlatter Disease (OSD) is one of the overuse syndromes, a condition of proximal tibial apophysitis commonly seen among physically active boys, particularly young athletes aged 10-14 years, during the highest growth spurt. The common presenting symptoms are intermittent or continuous knee pain while walking or playing the sport that involves jumping or running. This condition is self-limiting, resolves within 6-18 months after the growth plates close, and responds well with conservative treatment. However, few patients might have long term sequelae that persist into adulthood. The case report presents a case of recurring knee pain in a 35-year-old man upon his re-engagement with active sports. Clinical assessment and radiological investigation confirm his condition to be consistent with OSD. The diagnosis of OSD in this patient may be another rare case of the recurrence of the childhood condition in a skeletally mature adult.   Keywords: Osgood-Schlatter Disease, adult, knee pain.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study is to identify the level of haematocrit in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients and to determine the correlation between haematocrit levels and the severity of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). This is a descriptive cross-sectional study at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. All consented patients were interviewed and underwent a polysomnography (PSG) study. The severity of OSAS was based on the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) and average oxygen desaturation. The blood haematocrit level was also obtained. Thirty-six OSAS patients were in the study group, and 17 patients were in the control group. The mean haematocrit level in the control group was 41.6 (2.5 SD), whereas in the study group the mean haematocrit level was 44.0 (3.27 SD). Pearson correlation analysis showed there was no significant correlation between AHI and haematocrit level (p-value: 0.392), however, there is a significant correlation between haematocrit levels and average oxygen saturation level (P-value: 0.022). The independent t-test between mean haematocrit level between OSAS group and control group showed that there was a significant difference between the mean haematocrit level among the control and OSAS groups. The increased level of haematocrit is significantly correlated with average oxygen desaturation but not with AHI in OSAS patient. Average oxygen desaturation can be considered as a parameter to assess severity and hypoxic stress in OSA patients.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) is the most important hydrophilic carrier material used for the preparation of oral controlled drug delivery systems due to its high swellability and its significant effect on the release kinetics of an incorporated drug. The present study was designed to prepare sustained release granules of Rivastigmine tartrate by using HPMC as matrix former, Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) as diluent and Magnesium Stearate as lubricant. Blend of Eudragit co-polymers on different ratio was used to coat the granules. The drug-excipient compatibility studies were carried out by using FT-IR, DSC and XRPD analysis. The results shown that there was no significant interaction between the drug and excipients. Granules were prepared by wet granulation method. The granules were subjected to physico-chemical, drug content and in-vitro drug release studies. The best fit release kinetics was achieved with Higuchi equations followed by first order kinetics from the above results it was concluded that extended release granules of Rivastigmine tartrate can be prepared by using HPMC and also found that coating of granules with Eudragit co-polymers also effective to extend the release of drug.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
