This method can be widely used in dentistry for regeneration of dental structures and replacement of lost dental tissues. This is a review paper that states its scope, history, different fields of biomimetic dentistry, and its future conditions in India.  With Biomimetic dentistry, only the damage and decay are removed from the teeth, and the final restoration is bonded to the remaining healthy natural tooth structure.  The scope of biomimetic dentistry in India is enormous in the near future. It is the designing of biomaterials that simulates physical and mechanical properties of the lost tissue, thus providing an opportunity to introduce and change treatment modalities for the disease. Biomimetic dentistry is an interdisciplinary approach and has potential for transforming everyday dental practice. It brings the power of modern biological, chemical, and physical science to solve real clinical problems. Biomimetics provides a new strategy that translates our knowledge of biological structures and functions and creates new synthetic pathways to mimic biological processes.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"8 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139153871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is caused by changes in local microflora inhabiting the plaque biofilm from Gram-positive to Gram-negative facultatively anaerobic bacteria, destroying the periodontal membrane and surrounding alveolar bone. Mechanical debridement of biofilm and antibiotics has been used as conventional therapy for gingivitis and periodontitis. However, the uncertain efficacy of the current treatment leads to using probiotics as a promising strategy to combat the periodontal pathogen. An antibiotic application might contribute to antimicrobial resistance and environmental pollution due to non-degradable residue. Probiotics could be an alternative treatment for periodontal disease. This meta-analysis study aims to assess the potential of probiotic bacteria to reduce the magnitude of the inflammatory response, especially in the pro-inflammatory cytokines. Electronic databases such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, and PubMed were used to search for related articles up to May 2021. Randomized Controlled Clinical Trials (RCTs) or controlled clinical trials were included in the study, whereby the concentration of IL-1β and TNF-α were chosen as the main outcome variables. Independent screening resulted in four eligible publications being included in the meta-analysis. However, the overall mean difference for the concentration of IL-1β (MD: -0.32; 95% CI: -1.88, 1.25; P = 0.69) and TNF-α (MD: 0; 95% CI: -0.20, 0.20; P= 0.98) did not show any statistical significance difference between probiotic and placebo groups. Therefore, the study results demonstrated weak evidence to support the usage of probiotics in reducing the magnitude of inflammatory response in patients with periodontal disease. Smaller sample sizes and limited available data may contribute to this conclusion. Hence, future randomized controlled clinical trials with larger sample sizes and a longer intervention period must be considered to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics in periodontal disease.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"50 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139158532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some treatments such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy are frequently used with their side effects. Therefore, using natural products from the Prismatomeris genus such as P.glabra to treat breast cancer is safer and has been the subject of much inquiry as it is believed to have anticancer substances. This study was conducted to clarify the molecular mechanisms underlying the action of the Epigallogatechin gallate (EGCG) identified from P. glabra on MCF-7 the cell line. The ten most significant associated expressed genes with their expression level were identified based on Transcriptomic Profile in EGCG-treated MCF-7. Based on these data, the mechanism of the signalling pathway and the role of the putative genes were evaluated using the Reactome database. Then, the protein interaction was determined using STRING software. The associated genes with their expression level and the mechanism of the signalling pathway were determined based on the p-value. The result from the Transcriptomic Profile in EGCG-treated MCF-7 showed differentially expressed aberrant genes with significant association (p-value < 0.05). The dysregulated expressed genes were classified according to upregulated and downregulated (volcano plot) genes including the ASS1 (2.75E-23), ID1 (9.70E-18), LCP1 (3.20E-15), TAGLN (1.14E-14), ELOVL6 (2.70E-13), ID2 (1.20E-12), DDIT3 (3.76E-12), ACSL3 (5.05E-11), SREBF1 (1.70E-09) and SNORA109 (2.24E-08). The study revealed the molecular mechanism of differentially expressed genes in EGCG from P.glabra in treating breast cancer such as the MAPK signalling pathway and interaction among the proteins which provide insight into the potential usage of medicinal plants in developing personalized medicine for better treatment for the patient with breast cancer in ensuring better patient healthcare.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"12 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139158555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is well-established that COVID-19 vaccine is effective alongside being the most promising approach against COVID-19 infection in both general and vulnerable populations. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccine in pregnant women as a subgroup of vulnerable population by analysing several important immunological parameters in pregnant women. Specifically, it investigates how effective the COVID-19 vaccine will reduce the infection rate and how it will affect the mothers' antibody levels against SARS-CoV-2. In this study, the immunological parameters investigated are maternal antibody response against SARS-CoV-2 and the transplacental transfer of the antibody. To test the hypothesis that COVID-19 vaccine is effective in pregnant women, a systematic review was conducted on previous studies regarding COVID-19 vaccine and its outcomes in pregnancy. Results were narratively analysed. The results showed reduced COVID-19 infection rate, elevated maternal antibody titre against SARS-CoV-2 and positive transplacental anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody transfer in vaccinated pregnant women in comparison to unvaccinated pregnant women. These results suggest that COVID-19 vaccine is highly effective against COVID-19 infection in pregnant women. Furthermore, COVID-19 vaccine not only elicits sufficient maternal antibody response as an immunity for mothers against COVID-19 infection but also provides similar protection for infants via passive immunity by means of transplacental antibody transfer. In conclusion, the uptake of COVID-19 vaccine and future booster dose by pregnant women should be strongly encouraged due to its favourable outcomes and protection against COVID-19 disease.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139159387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The self-perceived competency of the students was evaluated using the Nutrition Competence (NUTCOMP) questionnaire, a validated tool designed to measure the self-perceived competence of healthcare professionals, including dietitians, in providing nutrition care to patients with chronic diseases. A total of 54 dietetics students from UniSZA participated in the study, all enrolled in Year 4 Semester 2 during their clinical training. They completed the NUTCOMP questionnaire, which consists of various domains and items related to nutrition care practice, including communication skills, critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and professionalism. The results showed that the students perceived themselves to have a high level of competency, with a mean score of 140.1 and a standard deviation of 26.83. Specifically, the students reported high levels of confidence in their ability to interact with clients and stakeholders, interpret nutritional information into lay language, and apply critical thinking skills to research and evaluate nutrition practices. The findings indicate that the students felt well-prepared to enter the field of dietetics upon graduation, reflecting a positive perception of their competence in nutrition care. However, it is essential to acknowledge that self-perceived competency may not always align with actual performance, and objective assessments are needed to validate these self-perceptions. In conclusion, the findings of this study contribute valuable insights into the self-perceived competency of dietetics students in UniSZA. The results suggest that the students have confidence in their knowledge and skills related to nutrition care, indicating a positive outlook on their future roles as dietitians. Further research could explore the relationship between self-perceived competency and actual performance in dietetics practice, as well as investigate the factors influencing the development of competency among dietetics students. Understanding and enhancing competency among future dietitians are crucial for improving the quality of nutrition care and ultimately promoting better health outcomes for patients.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"44 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139159039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Muslims fast from sunrise to dusk and abstain from various activities, including eating, drinking, sexual activity, smoking, and taking medication. Growing evidence showed the potential effect of Ramadhan fasting as one of strategies to reduce weight. However, limited studies investigated its effects on variables such as anthropometry and quality of life among middle-aged population. The aim of this study is to compare the anthropometry and quality of life before and during Ramadan among community-dwelling middle-aged population in the age range of 35 to 65 years old in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu. This prospective observational study was carried out from March 2023 to April 2023 involving 110 participants in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, Malaysia. Anthropometry measurement such as weight (kg), height (cm), body mass index (kg/m²), waist circumference (cm), body fat percentage (%), total muscle mass (kg), and total body water (%) was measured using a weighing scale, stadiometer, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and measuring tape respectively. Short Form 36 questionnaire (SF-36) was used to measure the level of quality of life among the participants. Findings showed significant reductions in weight (kg) (67.1±13.0 vs 69.8±13.3, p<0.001), body mass index (kg/m2) (26.1±4.4 vs27.6±4.5, p<0.001), waist circumference (cm) (91.2±15.1 vs 94.9±15.32, p<0.001), body fat percentage (%) (28.2±8.9 vs 30.1±8.78, p<0.001), and muscle mass (kg) (45.3±9.1 vs 45.9±9.4, p=0.016) during Ramadhan as compared to before Ramadhan. There were also significant improvements in various aspects of quality of life observed during Ramadan compared to before, including physical functioning (86.1±12.3 vs 79.1±15.1, p<0.001), physical health (80.8±20.9 vs 66.6±34.1, p<0.001), emotional problems (89.0±17.3 vs 75.4±31.7, p<0.001), social functioning (84.5±13.9 vs 73.9±15.5, p<0.001), pain (83.3±14.8 vs 70.2±18.7, p<0.001), general health (84.3±13.0 vs 70.4±17.8, p<0.001) and (79.7±8.4 vs 76.4±10.9, p=0.044). Correlational analysis found that higher total body water during Ramadan fasting was positive correlated with higher energy levels (p=0.015). This study’s limitation is that these findings confine to local population. Future studies should involve a larger population to understand better on the health benefits of Ramadan fasting.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139157350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The very first gene to be associated with obesity is fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene with the involvement from many single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the first intron of FTO. Early detection of obesity-related SNPs is very crucial in the effort of reducing obesity rate which is expected to increase by 2025.This has led to the urge of developing a method to detect individual with predisposing factors towards obesity, with the hope that this method will eventually helpful in assisting healthcare authorities to rapidly detect individual who are at high risk of being obese. Multiplex PCR-RFLP is a method for rapid detection of obesity-related SNPs using gene sequence amplifying technique and optimization done using gradient PCR technique. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate the potential of multiplex PCR-RFLP to amplify FTO genetic variants. Materials and methods: A total of 14 UniSZA students were recruited to obtain 2 ml of peripheral whole blood for DNA extraction. Single gradient PCR dan multiplex PCR were employed to determine the optimum annealing temperature for all assigned FTO SNPs as rs9939609, rs1421085 and rs17817288. The PCR products were run on 1% of agarose gel electrophoresis and visualized under UV Gel doc Image Analyzer. These PCR products were introduced to restriction enzymes for the cutting site on genetic variation namely Bfal, HpyCH4V, HpyCH4IV for rs9939609, rs1421085 and rs17817288, respectively. Next, the PCR fragments were identified on 2% agarose gel electrophoresis under UV Gel Doc Image Analyzer. Results: The optimum annealing temperature to amplify all FTO SNPs obtained through gradient PCR was 60°C. The amplification of FTO rs9939609, rs17817288 and rs1421085 regions, showed specific size product of 151 bp, 140 bp, and 131 bp respectively. In RFLP, the fragments after restriction enzyme digestion produced homozygous wild type, heterozygous and homozygous mutant type for genotype characterization based on allele cut site by specific restriction enzyme namely BfaI, HpyCG4IV and HpyCH4V, respectively. Conclusion: This study may become preliminary data on the potential of multiplex PCR-RFLP in provide rapid diagnosis to amplify multiple FTO genetic variants.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"20 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139158064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ultrasound has become an essential component of the modern investigation of female infertility and the management of assisted conception, which is able to access endometrial and uterine factors that affect embryo implantation. To date, Transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) has become the modality of choice for the initial study of female infertility since it is widely available, cost-effective, and non-invasive. This study aims to assess the diagnostic accuracy of TVS in evaluating female infertility and how different types of abnormalities in female infertility affect the diagnostic accuracy. The systematic search in this study followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) and Meta-Analyses. The electronic databases PubMed and ScienceDirect were utilized. Papers published between 2012 and 2022 were chosen and subjected to analysis following the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS). In the initial search strategy, a total of 217 articles were discovered. By applying specific criteria for inclusion and exclusion, a set of five studies involving 770 patients were chosen for analysis. Forest plot analysis of these five studies evaluating sensitivity and specificity demonstrated low heterogeneity (Q = 4.574) and moderate heterogeneity (Q = 20.771) respectively. Employing a random-effects model, transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) demonstrated a favorable overall accuracy for evaluating female infertility with a pooled sensitivity of 0.79 (95% CI: 0.60, 0.99), and a specificity of 0.96 (95% CI: 0.76, 1.17). The sensitivity and specificity may vary depending on the specific abnormality being assessed. The most observed abnormalities were endometrial polyps and uterine fibroids, while uterine cancer and adenomyosis were the least frequently observed abnormalities. Findings from this study suggest that TVS offers moderate accuracy in the evaluation of female infertility. TVS is particularly valuable when used in conjunction with hysteroscopy, as it demonstrates high accuracy in detecting and characterizing abnormalities.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"7 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139158535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results show the majority of the participants (70%) had good scores, 23.8% had excellent scores, 6.4% had an average score and 0.4% had poor scores respectively. The prevalence of nutritional knowledge among working mothers in Terengganu was excellent as they were 93.2% scored for high nutritional knowledge, and only 6.8% scored for low nutritional knowledge. Furthermore, there was a significant association between sociodemographic factors (age, educational level, marital status, and salary income) with nutritional knowledge among working mothers in Terengganu. Meanwhile, there was no significant association between sociodemographic factors (location, type of job, and family members) with nutritional knowledge among working mothers in Terengganu. A nutritious diet helps to maintain healthy body weight, promotes favourable pregnancy outcomes, supports normal growth, development, and aging, and minimizes the risk of chronic disease, all of which contribute to overall health and well-being. Therefore, nutritional knowledge should be widely disseminated to Malaysians of all ages.","PeriodicalId":189900,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Medicine and Biomedicine","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139159372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
