Recurrent laryngeal nerve is known to have many anatomical variations. The non-recurrent inferior laryngeal nerve(NRLN) is an extremely rare asymptomatic but important anatomical variation, and it is very susceptible to damage during surgery. In this study, we investigated the NRLN variation in a single-institution database. Materials and Methods: A total of 22 patients with NRLN were identified from 5,900 patients who underwent thyroidectomy or parath-yroidectomy in our department between January 2009 and December 2015. Their clinical profiles were retrospectively analyzed. Results: All the 22 NRLNs were right-sided. According to Toniatos classification, 4 cases were type 1, 10 cases were type 2A, and 8 cases were type 2B. Statistical analyses showed no correlation between the incidence of NRLN and potential risk factors (gender, pathology variation, and application of intraoperative nerve monitoring). In the neurophysio-logical monitoring group, the mean operation time for exposure was 4.2±1.8 minutes(n=3), which was significantly shorter(p=0.0004) than that in the non-monitoring group, which was 9.7±2.1 minutes (n=19). No NRLN injury occurred in any of these 22 patients. Conclusion:Thyroid surgeons should be aware of this extremely rare anatomical variation in order to avoid laryngeal nerve damage. Intraoperative neur-ophysiological monitoring can effectively help to identify and preserve the NRLN.","PeriodicalId":184905,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Information Technology in Medicine and Education (ITME)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131715184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He had a disease course spanning over 2 years, during which he had a sever weight loss (about 30kg). A diagnosis of gastric retention was made at the first visit. At the second time he was treated as anemia, hypoproteinemia and kidney stone. This time with resection of the goiter at the right chest, the patient was in remission of the symptoms of nausea and vomit for about half a year. A road accident resulted in the fracture (Fig.1a) of left tibiofibula and ulna. The fracture of both femur was established 4 months later, and then a diagnosis of severe primary hyperparathyroidism had finally been established based on the high levels of serum calcium and intact parathyroid hormone. The patient underwent surgical exploration, presenting unchanged serum calcium and PTH concentrations. The 18F-Fluorocholine PET-CT detected multiple pathological metastatic carcinoma of bone. Postop-eratively, the patient choosed to continue treatment under the nurse of his family. After five month of follow-up, we received the message of death from a relative of our patient. Two classical techniques named Otsu's method (OTSU) and maximum entropy method (MET) are selected as the objective function based on their opposite characteristics when processing brain MRI with different levels of noise and bias field. The proposed method aims at finding trade-off solutions when segmenting images with noise and bias field. MOEA/D which has low computational complexity and high accuracy is used as the fundamental optimization tool. The Pareto front is approximated by optimizing OTSU and MET simultaneously. We employee the angle based method to find knee point as the final solution which contains more information from Pareto front. The experiments are carried on BrainWeb dataset to verify the performance of proposed framework. The segmentation results also indicate the effectiveness of the new approach.","PeriodicalId":184905,"journal":{"name":"2016 8th International Conference on Information Technology in Medicine and Education (ITME)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123700138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
