This technique eliminates the need for costly bypass switches and their related deficiencies. \"One-by-N\" tree couplers are used as the fanout mechanism from an LED or laser to send optical signals to a primary fiber and \"N\" shunt fibers. These shunt fiber waveguides can be \"switched\" into the active network when the optical signal in the primary fiber drops below a prescribed level. This permits rapid reconfiguration around a failed node or primary fiber path and minimizes or eliminates the loss of data. In a near term implementation of the concept, the signals from the input primary and shunt fibers are converted to electrical form with standard PIN photodiodes and the signal level is analyzed. If the signal falls below the preset threshold, the output from the shunt fiber(s) is electronically switched into the network node to restore robust network operation. The power budget to determine the number of successive nodes which can be bypassed is identically that of a \"1*N\" tree network permitting any number of bypasses within the link margin.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":183796,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1993 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference-NAECON 1993","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130897214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Flight control using only the throttles to achieve safe landing for a large jet transport airplane, the Boeing 720, is investigated using quantitative feedback theory. Results are compared to an augmented control developed in a previous study. The controller corrects unsatisfactory open-loop characteristics by increasing the system bandwidth and damping, but improvement of the control bandwidth remains very difficult. The pitch controller is robust when turbulence is absent or moderate. The roll controller performs well in the absence of turbulence, but is sensitive to moderate turbulence. Handling qualities of the augmented control for approach and landing were evaluated by piloted simulation flights.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":183796,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1993 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference-NAECON 1993","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116225760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Real-time simulation of electronic scanning antennas","authors":"R. Metz, H. Hirsch, J. Jones","doi":"10.1109/NAECON.1993.290928","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/NAECON.1993.290928","url":null,"abstract":"This paper demonstrates an optimal marriage of two diverse technologies: electromagnetic antenna modeling and distributed (parallel) computing techniques. It presents a new and innovative methodology for modeling a number of antennas, with electronic scanning capability, in real-time, tactical airborne radar system simulations. The initial discussions compare execution time test results for antenna gain and phase-shift calculations, for several different antenna types. These include examples of electronically scanned acquisition radar and four-horn monopulse tracking antennas as well as mechanically-scanning antennas. This analysis defines the relative computational complexities for models of these types of antennas. Execution results are compared for three classes of algorithms: rigorous, empirical, and lookup tables. The algorithm classes were evaluated using a mainframe VAX and three grades of personal computer (PC) systems: (80)286, (80)386, and (80)486-based machines. The number of times the various antenna pattern algorithms could be interrogated in certain time periods are given, for each type of antenna and computer, using the types of antenna typical of both airborne and ground-based tracking and acquisition radars. These results define the relative, machine-dependent performance of the antenna modeling algorithm classes. Finally, the paper discusses means by which parallel, distributed computing techniques may be applied to speed up the execution of the algorithms.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":183796,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1993 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference-NAECON 1993","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126618577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instructional design processes include the development of course control documents. When sufficiently detailed course control documents are developed, to sufficient detail, courseware is: (1) produced more efficiently, (2) easily traced back to validated training requirements, and (3) more capable of surviving rigorous tests for validity. A key element in course design is developing a set of properly written objectives. This paper outlines the relationship of objectives to course control documents and describes how appropriately written criterion referenced objectives can guide courseware writers through the course development process. Properly stated objectives guide by incorporating indicators useful in grouping objectives by learning domains, grouping objectives into units of instruction, dividing units of instruction into individual lessons, and assigning instructional media to each lesson.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":183796,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1993 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference-NAECON 1993","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129059275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electronic simulation of directional and distance auditory cues has greatly expanded the areas of application of virtual audio. Some potential aerospace applications include monitoring spatially separated speech communication signals to increase understanding, navigating by an auditory beacon, and acquiring visual targets with the aid of directional audio signals. Potential non-aerospace applications include navigational aids for the blind and enhanced virtual reality simulation for entertainment and education. In the future, more applications may use virtual audio technology to display spatial auditory information. Past, present, and future applications are discussed for aerospace, research, and entertainment industries. Techniques for creating virtual audio over loudspeakers and headphones are described. It is concluded that virtual audio systems are more flexible than previous physical simulations and can improve low fidelity.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":183796,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1993 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference-NAECON 1993","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133603235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The FDI employs simplex optimization procedure for on-line estimation of the system parameters affected by battle damage, thus providing the basis for the implementation of a variable-structure controller to augment surface commands due to surface impairments. In addition, the suggested FDI provides failure information to a positive pilot alert (PPA) system. The approach was verified by computer simulations which showed that characteristics of an impaired system can be dramatically improved by FDI and SRFCS.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":183796,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1993 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference-NAECON 1993","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130815785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

STANAG 3910 is a \"dual-speed\" (1 Mbps+20 Mbps) data bus: a 20 Mbps, data-block-transfer-dedicated, High Speed line is added to, and controlled through a MIL-STD-1553B-fully-compliant Low Speed line. The optimized 20 Mbps data rate together with the use of MTL-STD-1553B as a basis result in a very cost-effective data highway which meets the requirements of the most recent aircraft. Next generation airborne systems require the exchange of many different kinds of data. Dassault Electronique has developed and produced compact MIL-STD-1553B/STANAG 3910 BCRT interface module (named HBM 3910) which provides the necessary functionalities and performances. STANAG 3910 has become a living reality fully supported by off-the-shelf products. It is expected to become the avionic data bus standard of the next 20 years in Europe. After briefly presenting the STANAG 3910 data bus, this paper focuses on how the latest requirements of military avionic systems have driven towards high-performance and enhanced-functionality bus interface components.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":183796,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1993 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference-NAECON 1993","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131434664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This, in turn, has sparked renewed interest in the development of IR missile warning algorithms and architectures. The Avionics Directorate has funded several IR missile warning algorithm studies and the performance of six algorithm suites is presented in this paper. All suites were evaluated against registered data from two bands of mid-wave IR (MWIR) imagery and are evaluated for their target detection performance without the aid of tracking algorithms. The effectiveness of each algorithm suite to detect point targets was measured in terms of missed detections and false alarms. The preliminary results show that for targets with low signal to noise ratios (SNR), missile warning algorithm suites which use simple spatial and spectral filters achieve the same performance as more computationally complex algorithm suites.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":183796,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1993 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference-NAECON 1993","volume":"193 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132910509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A steady state heat transfer analysis was performed using calculated heat dissipations and boundary temperatures that were obtained through data supplied by the TWT's manufacturer. The resulting temperatures from this analysis were used as loading conditions in a linear static analysis of a smaller model which represents a 12 turn section of the circuit. The failure modes investigated were cracking of the helix tape and fracture of the support rods due to excessive thermal stresses. Cracking of the helix tape would cause an open-circuit to occur while fracture of the support rods could cause small mechanical perturbations in the slow wave structure which may reflect the RF signal. Both cases could possibly lead to electrical failure of the TWT. Static stress analysis of the attenuation section indicated that the stress levels in the helix and support rods due to this particular temperature gradient were within acceptable limits and would not fracture if these components were free of initial cracks or flaws. Stresses through the helix were sufficient to nucleate cracks, however the length of these cracks would be minute and would not affect the useful life of the helix.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":183796,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1993 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference-NAECON 1993","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128307567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
