The success of this approach can generally be seen especially to promote, advertise and market product effectively besides staying competitive in global environment. The dramatic reduction in the cost of computer hardware is put forward as the major reason for the increasing importance of computer-aided learning (CAL). Computer-aided learning or CAL usually delivers more realistic views of product to customer. Due to its distinctive characteristics of interactive, user-friendly as well as attractive, people are keen to keep explore and hardly get bored. Compared with the old-fashioned way, CAL applications assist customers to avoid from overlooking necessary information. On the company side, this helps to achieve paperless situation by replacing or reducing the usage of paper. Certainly, this saves a lot of cost in terms of printing manuals, pamphlets and fliers. The case study presented is computer numerical control (CNC) milling machine at CNC Lab, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Industri Selangor named VMC-1000 produced by GATE company. The multimedia authoring software applied to succeed this study are Macromedia Director, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro and Gold Wave. This CAL application mainly facilitates in supplying the step-by-step tutorials and machine specification details.","PeriodicalId":183006,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Congress on Engineering Education","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122389665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, this paper also addresses lecturers' and students' perceptions on the integration of these skills in the teaching and learning of technical courses in order to find out whether there is any significant difference in their perceptions. The methods used to obtain the data were survey questionnaires and interviews. The results indicate that critical thinking and problem solving skills is placed as most important soft skills by the lecturers and the final year students and is being integrated in the teaching by employing problem-based learning approach, project oriented problem-based approach and project-based approach. The results also reveal that there is no congruence between the lecturers and students in the way they perceived the integration of critical thinking and problem solving skills in the teaching of technical courses. The results are then further discussed.","PeriodicalId":183006,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Congress on Engineering Education","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133740027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Innovative approach has been put forward in upgrading the context of teaching and learning of physics subject in school. In this project, students have been exposed to real engineering design process through the development of simplified turbidity meter. This project is done by diluting a related university project into a simplified version of the system. A “straight forward design approach” introduced in this design eliminates the need for complex amplification and algorithmic processing circuitry thus producing a simpler version of turbidity meter that can be easily understood by high school students. The science principles applied through this project has further increase students' appreciation towards physics subjects in school. Hence, reaching beyond school syllabus through the suggested outreach effort should be implemented in broader sense to raise more young interest in physics-engineering.","PeriodicalId":183006,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Congress on Engineering Education","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133823843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work presents findings from a survey of choices on several activities and reliable sources used to learn programming courses in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia. The survey was done based on feedback from 100 undergraduate students with computer science background as well as regular computer users. An interpretive approach adopted using multidimensional proximity scaling and multiple response techniques. As a result, it was proven that both male and female students have different preferences for activities and reliable sources that were in learning programming. This would be useful for investigating techniques and approaches in using preferred activities and reliable sources to improve undergraduate students programming skills.","PeriodicalId":183006,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Congress on Engineering Education","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134415421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present both traditional LO as well as the fuzzy LO evaluation methods. We discuss both methods using student assessment marks and conclude on the possibility of employing fuzzy LO evaluation. We also compare the LO variation in evaluations of fuzzy method to traditional method using mean square error and find that to be small. Fuzzy method offers instructors the flexibility to modify the input assessment and output LO relationships, easier to set target outcome based on combination of these relationships and the process is akin to the human's reasoning.","PeriodicalId":183006,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Congress on Engineering Education","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127314792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
