It attempts to compile or publish these data, aiming to “resurrect” the celebrity through virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI). Although such data are used for the memorial of the deceased, their autonomy and privacy preferences regarding the handling of their data must be addressed. Moreover, businesses that use remnant data of the deceased are emerging. This paper presents the results of an online survey conducted with 1,200 participants. The results showed that the percentage of respondents who wanted to utilize the data was low, with most answering “neither” and “don’t know” to questions regarding handling of remnant data of the deceased. In the responses, clear differences were observed based on gender, religion, and age group, with those by respondents in their 20s and 40s being the most distinctive. The methods preferred by the respondents to utilize remnant data varied according to the circumstances of the death and not celebrity type. In the case of predicted deaths, respondents preferred to compile posthumous data, whereas in the case of suicides, they preferred not to resurrect the individual via AI or VR. This indicates that the demand to resurrect celebrities is currently low; however, this may change in the future, and the ethical aspects will need to be considered.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115120845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the SDGs as a guiding precept, a rapid review of each individual SDG and relevant space industries was conducted to assess the impacts of space exploration and the global goals. A rapid review is a type of meta-analysis [1] which provides a similar type of analysis as a traditional systematic review, but with constraints that make it useful for accelerated analysis and the analysis of emerging research topics [2]. For this study, the question of interest was, “How does space exploration intersect with the UN’s SDGs?”. Preliminary findings of this study show evidence of four prominent spheres of impact between space technologies and the SDGs: (1) remote sensing and earth observations satellite data are central to monitoring, modelling, and policymaking around the SDGs, (2) Extra-terrestrial conditions (microgravity, near-perfect vacuum, etc.) offer new manufacturing and energy generating capabilities, (3) spinoff technologies and technology transfers from space exploration activities often find terrestrial applications and finally (4) many articles discuss the possible societal implications of space technologies.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127912530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A literature review is presented of select works in RI, RRI, and critical race theory in Science and Technology Studies (STS) as conceptual foci in relation to public interest technology development with a U.S. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) focus. The paper further explores gaps in these approaches to responsible technology development as applied to Indigenous communities and continues with a literature review of select works within Indigenous theory. The author argues the need for both Indigenous theory and Indigenous data sovereignty as required elements when working with and within Indigenous communities. The paper concludes by proposing “Interrelational Technology Development” to provide greater awareness and a conceptual framework for harm mitigation with increased responsibility, relevance, and respect for and within BIPOC communities.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122876681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We also assume that Problem-based Learning aims toward significant pedagogical experiences with long lasting results. The combination of both allows for possibilities in which ethics integrate to the high education curricula, not as an isolated class, usually taken during the first semesters, but as a structural part of every pedagogical experience. We aim to show how ethics could become an integral part of Problem-based Learning, and how it can be assessed before, during and after processes of direct intervention with communities. Using a matrix that combines ethical aspects and stages of PBL through volunteer work, we present a tool for assessment as well as an organized method for integrating ethical discussion to the pedagogical experiences.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126135715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A largescale self-report survey of 515 cyberfraudsters in Ghana is utilized. The results suggest that traditional criminological theories are still applicable for analyzing cybercrime, especially cyber fraud, even though it is a more sophisticated form of traditional crime with criminals employing various tactics and security experts putting various preventive measures in place. Due to a variety of reasons, cybercriminals continue to target unprotected internet users. The study concludes that depending just on police patrol is insufficient for stopping cyber fraud attempts and that investing in secure systems and solutions is essential for protecting netizens’ assets and data from cyber dangers.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128090545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We use an interdisciplinary methodology to test our hypotheses: observing a human-led recruitment panel and building an explainable algorithmic prototype from the ground up, to quantify gender bias. The key findings of this study are threefold: identifying potential sources of human bias from a recruitment panel’s ranking of CVs; identifying sources of bias from a potential algorithmic pipeline which simulates human decision making; and recommending ways to mitigate bias from both aspects. Our research has provided an innovative research design that combines social science and data science to theorise how automation may introduce bias in hiring practices, and also pinpoint where it is introduced. It also furthers the current scholarship on gender bias in hiring practices by providing key empirical inferences on the factors contributing to bias.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129671723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One thing is for sure there is a difference between access and inclusion. Although many underrepresented people have been recruited into STEM and given access to a STEM education, they still experience exclusion in their institutions and programs. In this paper, we focus on STEM capital and the agentic strategies that support the development of STEM capital for women marginalized in postsecondary undergraduate STEM programs. STEM capital is a concept that explains why some people are excluded from getting STEM privileges while those already having STEM privilege receive even more. We analyze STEM capital from an institutional and programmatic level, particularly focusing on the “T” in STEM and the large influence that technology has on STEM capital. We take an anti-deficit perspective in our analysis and explore the potential of agency and agentic strategies. That is, we privilege the strengths that STEM learners bring with them and ask how those strengths can be leveraged to navigate through exclusionary institutional systems and programs.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132867601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Companies are increasingly required to visualize the electricity consumption of the products and services they use to plan and promote measures to reduce Scope 3 emissions to achieve green transformation. However, the electricity consumption of public blockchain-based products and services is not well known to practitioners, and progress in this area has been slow. This study elucidates the electricity consumption of major public blockchains and the share of renewable energy they consumed. In addition, it describes the problems inherent in the blockchain mining process, which is the main cause of this problem, and how to address them. This study also examines possible methods that could be adopted to reduce the environmental impact from the perspective of the public blockchain, miners, and users.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133819432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study presents a case of data mining and analysis of citizen feedback data from multiple platforms: Online survey; Social Media; and Citizen Assembly; to inform policy and decision-making of the Intramuros Administration regarding a proposed pedestrianization of a major street. The study applies a CRISP-DM data mining methodology to pre-process and process feedback data from Facebook, Pol.Is survey platform, and two citizen assemblies, to highlight the key concerns and priorities of constituents regarding the policy topic. Using timeline analysis, principal components analysis, clustering, association rules mining, and topic modeling, the priority concerns of the stakeholders regarding the policy were found to be: security and safety while walking, negative effects of pedestrianization on business, concerns about parking spaces, alternative routes, and accessibility (PWDs and senior citizens). Using the findings as a centerpiece for stakeholder dialogue, the Intramuros Administration and stakeholders discussed in detail, and co-created the proposed next steps to address the concerns raised. The study presents the Intramuros survey case as a replicable model for automation and integration of citizen feedback data in local government policy and decision-making.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"12 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132026512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
