Bar-Kochva","doi":"10.1017/S0068673500003564","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1017/S0068673500003564","url":null,"abstract":"The Galatian invasion of Asia Minor, which shook the foundations of the ancient Ionian civilization, finds echoes in a considerable number of epigraphical documents, all of which have been analysed several times over in the course of the complicated discussions of the chronology of the First Syrian War. In this paper I shall concentrate on the sources which have been related to Antiochus I's decisive battle against the Galatians, weigh their relevance to that battle and their authenticity, and attempt to date the events reflected in them. The battle was probably commemorated in a comprehensive epic by Simonides of Magnesia. The Suda s.v. Σιμωνίδης reports: Σιμωνίδης Μάγνης Σιπύλου, ἐποποιός. γέγονεν ἐπὶ Ἀντιόχου τοῦ Μεγάλου κληθέντος, καὶ γέγραφε τἁς Ἀντιόχου τοῦ Μεγάλου πράξεις καὶ τὴν πρὸς Γαλάτας μάχην, ὅτε μετὰ τῶν ἐλεφάντων τὴν ἵππον αὐτῶν ἔφθειρεν. The difficulty of calling Antiochus τοῦ Μεγάλου has led some to suggest that the Suda is referring to Antiochus III, but the reference to the victory of the elephants over the Galatian cavalry, known from Lucian to have decided the battle of Antiochus I against the Galatians, excludes any alternative. Lucian, however rhetorical and inaccurate, can be trusted when he attributes the victory to the elephants (see below). The conjecture that the latter reference was a gloss, inserted by the compiler or someone acquainted with Lucian, might have been given credit had we information about any campaign conducted against the Galatians by Antiochus III. The object of the paper was to point out the meaning conveyed by the use of the forms of the 1st pers. plur. in place of the 1st pers. sing. These had been hitherto assumed (e.g. by Reid on Cic. A cad. 1. 1. 1, and ' Cicero in his Letters,' p. 251) to be simply 'equivalent,' and although Madvig (Lat. Gr. § 48.3) had felt there must be a difference, he had only indicated one definite category, the use of nos by an author in referring to his own writings; this would be found to be only a particular case of a wider use which Prof. Conway claimed to have established by examining all the occurrences of the sing, nos in more than one-third of the letters. He had counted over 600 examples which showed clearly one of two meanings which might be called ' projective' and ' patronising '; and he had found no case where neither category was applicable. All the cases in which nos (or noster, or the 1st plur. in verbs) was a true plural must be put aside; besides references to definite groups of persons, there was a large number of indefinite and obvious plural uses; e.g. nos might mean humanity at large, the writer's own nation, generation, family, political party, his school of philosophy, his circle of friends (especially in the possessive adj.), his household (as regularly in invitations), and, in particular, the people who happen to be together in the place whence the letter is written (esp. in phrases like nihil adhuc scimus ; cf. nos hie...P. Sullam mortuoni habebamvs Att. 15. 16. 2, and 16. 13 a. 1); or persons travelling together by chance (so almost invariably when a ship is mentioned, naueni spero nos bonam habere Fam. 14. 7. 2, so Att. 6. 4. 1, 5. 12. 1, 10. 17. 2, 16. 4. 4 etc.). Especially noteworthy was the use of noster of relatives and friends to avoid the expression of intimate personal feeling implied in ineus; thus noster was used by a father of very young children e.g. filiam meam et tiiam (Tullia) Giceronemque nostrum (Marcus Cicero, then seven years old) ad Q. But this difficulty only arises if we consider a foot to be an absolute, or nearly absolute, measure of distance, as in our own linear measurement. However, the flea that jumped from the head of Chaerephon to the head of Socrates (Aristophanes, Clouds 150) had its jump measured in terms of its own feet, so the feet in which Phayllus's jump was measured may have been less than normal human feet—perhaps the feet of his small son. We may like to assume that some wag composed the epigram for the amusement of those who knew what happened and the baffling of those who did not, which includes ourselves. This explanation would also help to clarify his apparently equally phenomenal performance in throwing the discus. If we may judge from the account of the chariot-race at the funeral games of Patroclus in Iliad XXIII δίσκουρα was a distance not much more than the length of a chariot and horses, perhaps 40 or 45 feet. Camb. Phil. Soc. 1968, pp. 65-74). His article falls into two parts: in the first he lists variants that he thinks go back to the author himself, and in the second he attempts to show that it is nowhere necessary to emend a reading in which both manuscripts agree. While Professor Young deserves gratitude for drawing attention to the number and diversity of the disagreements between the two manuscripts, a glance at the variants he discusses shows that he has a conception altogether too generous not only of what can pass for Greek but also of what can pass for sense in a given context. The purpose of this article is twofold: to put readers of Longus on their guard against a theory whose attractions fade as soon as it is measured against the text, and to disappoint any believer in author's variants who may have pounced on Professor Young's article and stored it away for future use. The Standard edition, if there is one, is Dalmeyda's (Bude, 1934); but Professor Young has established by a patient examinarion of MS. A diät Dalmeyda's apparatus criticus needs correcting in over 300 places. It is to be hoped that Professor Young will publish the results of his valuable work on A; for the time being there is no Option but to follow Dalmeyda unless Professor Young's article offers more accurate information. In the following notes Professor Young's order of presentation is adhered to, except that variants he cannot use in support of his theory are separated from ones he can, the former being listed under (a) and the latter under (Jb).
