In acute stress situations, adrenaline, neurotransmitters, and cortisol are released, causing systemic changes and physiological disruptions, keeping the body alert. Heart rate variability assesses the autonomic nervous system. Joint manipulation, involving high-speed, low-amplitude movements, was chosen based on the patient's dysfunction. The study aimed to assess the immediate effects of this technique on the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, analyzing heart rate variability in university students in Fortaleza. This cross-sectional, randomized, quantitative study at the Ateneu University Center involved 20 participants divided into two groups: G1 – vertebral manipulation application and G2 – a control group with positioning only. Autonomic nervous system evaluation used a sensor connected to the earlobe and the Inner Balance app. Data was processed by Em Wave and Kubios software before and after manipulation. Range of motion was assessed using Kinovea software. Both groups experienced increased range of motion, with greater improvement in the manipulation group. Both groups showed increased parasympathetic activity and reduced sympathetic stress levels, possibly influenced by manipulation and touch, providing either nerve decompression or direct autonomic nervous system stimulation through touch.","PeriodicalId":176982,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Clinical Medicine and Review","volume":"51 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139128035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the present study was to investigate, through a scoping review, the etiology of toothbrush ingestion. This review intends to describe all clinical cases of toothbrush ingestion mentioned in the main databases. Initially, 136 studies were selected, 31 duplicate studies were excluded, resulting in a final sample of 32 articles in 114 minutes of work, divided into 28 sessions in the Rayyan application. Incidents with foreign bodies are common in Otolaryngology and Surgery practice, however, toothbrush swallow is rare. In this study it was found that most cases of toothbrush ingestion were intentional (bulimia, induction of vomiting and mental disorder) and the Toothbrushes that appear in the gastrointestinal tract are placed by the own patients accidentally or intentionally and rarely by someone else.","PeriodicalId":176982,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Clinical Medicine and Review","volume":"31 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138952261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to evaluate nocturnal blood pressure patterns (BPP) in hypertensive patients with OSAS in Angola. A descriptive, cross-sectional observational study was carried out in a private clinic in Angola. Demographic and clinical variables, polysomnography, and ABPM parameters were included. Patients were classified as a dippers, non-dippers, and reverse dippers. One-way ANOVA test, Kruskal-Walli’s test, and chi-square test were used as appropriate. The sample consisted of 70 individuals: 39(55.7%) were male. The mean age was 53.63±9.14 years and the BMI was 35.82 ± 6.57 kg/m2. An association between patients with a past medical history of hypertension and BPP was found (p<0.05). Mean O2 saturation was significantly lower in the reverse dippers (p=0.25). Although insignificantly, the dippers were younger and less obese. In contrast, the proportion of smokers and diabetics was higher in the reverse dippers. No correlation was found between the apnea-hypopnea index, the mean blood pressure, and the Epworth sleepiness scale. In the present study, the prevalence of non-dipping and reverse dipping patterns was high. It needs to be confirmed with future prospective studies.","PeriodicalId":176982,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Clinical Medicine and Review","volume":"77 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138600426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Durante a pandemia da COVID-19, o uso de “smartphones” e o conteúdo “on-line” aumentaram, uma vez que era necessário o distanciamento social, incluindo mudanças no sistema educativo. Considerando a preocupação das pessoas com sua saúde, este estudo teve como objetivo criar uma conta no Instagram® (@ConectaImuno) para disponibilizar conteúdo confiável em imunologia sobre respostas imunológicas às infecções naturais e vacinação, especialmente doenças virais. Os dados foram coletados pelo aplicativo entre março,2021-janeiro,2022, e foi possível observar características dos seguidores da conta, em sua maioria jovens adultos (18-34 anos) e mulheres(>70%). A localização geográfica variou, com os estados do Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo predominando até agosto,2021(> 40%), mas depois disso predominaram pessoas fora desses dois estados(>50%). Verificou-se também que o número de pessoas acompanhando o conteúdo triplicou ao longo do tempo, com correlação positiva entre número de seguidores, contas alcançadas e visualização das postagens. Finalmente, os dados sugerem que as redes sociais podem ser importantes para monitorar o interesse em tópicos científicos como a imunologia e a vacinação, atraindo a atenção dos jovens e ajudando a divulgar informações confiáveis sobre saúde pública.","PeriodicalId":176982,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Clinical Medicine and Review","volume":"35 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139234299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within these impairments, both spatial and non-spatial attention deficits have emerged as critical features that profoundly impact the quality of life. Spatial attention, crucial for the selective processing of sensory information, involves intricate neural networks, including the parietal and frontal lobes. This review, based on a narrative literature review, synthesizes current research on the neuropathological foundations of spatial and non-spatial attention deficits in various neurodegenerative diseases.","PeriodicalId":176982,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Clinical Medicine and Review","volume":"71 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139253975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Manual therapy has emerged as an effective treatment for this condition, addressing limitations in range of motion, joint mechanical alterations, contractures and adhesions in the capsules or ligaments, and misalignment of bone surfaces. This study aimed to review the literature on the effects of manual therapy on adhesive capsulitis. Databases such as PubMed, Scielo, Lilacs, and PEDro were consulted, using keywords like tendinitis, adhesive capsulitis, and manual therapy, resulting in the identification of 180 articles. After applying exclusion criteria, 20 articles were selected, covering the period from October 2019 to March 2020. While cryotherapy and electrotherapy demonstrated effectiveness in treatment, manual therapy stood out for pain control, increased tissue flexibility, and improved range of motion. Techniques such as the McKenzie method, myofascial release, and low-amplitude, high-velocity joint manipulation were frequently mentioned. In summary, despite the lack of a consensus on the best protocol, physiotherapy, with its manual techniques, plays a pivotal role in the functional recovery of the complex shoulder joint.","PeriodicalId":176982,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Clinical Medicine and Review","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135871280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
