Without entering into a dispute about the last point, I will highlight the figure: fifty. Mygeneration is traversing this line right now. Born between 1929 and 1941, between two great turning points, they were not in time for war but became the children of war; now they are crossing the equator of life: those who did not survive are crossing this line along with those who did, crossing it in their verse. All the dictionaries say that this word, which is purely social, does not mean \"friend\" but \"comrade.\" The original means companion, comrade-in-arms, associate. Freidenberg (1890-1955), a professor at Leningrad University, in 1932 organized the first Soviet faculty of classical philology, which she headed for many years. She is the author of a large number of works that not only are still relevant today but also are of great general theoretical interest. The most significant of the many works Freidenberg published is the famous book Poetika siuzheta i zhanra. Period antichnoi literatury (Leningrad, 1935). This work, like the majority of the others (including unpublished ones), goes far beyond the limits of classical philology. The publishing house Raduga asked me to prepare a new version of my book The Prose of Iurii Trifonov [Proza Iuriia Trifonova] for a substantially abridged English translation. And thus it was that in 1989, after cutting the text, I undertook to make certain concepts clearer so that the book would be more accessible to those who are not as immersed in this country's literature as we are. As I carefully reread the text I had written in 1981 and 1982 with a slightly detached, \"fresh\" eye, I discovered that much of it was expressed in a cryptic manner. In the \"era of stagnation\" the principle of a code was sapienti sat, i.e., \"a word to the wise is sufficient.\" It was as though an unwritten agreement had been made between me and my readers: in order to express one's ideas and avoid restrictions on the part of the censors, it was necessary to develop one's own language, one's own system of signs.
