D’abord dédiée à Carus Auguste et Carin César en 282, elle fut ensuite actualisée de façon maladroite par l’ajout du nom de Numérien Auguste à la fin de 283 ou au début de 284. L’intérêt du texte réside dans la mention des épithètes Germanicus maximus et Gothicus maximus attribuées à Numérien, car la seconde, en apparence nouvelle, semble aussi apparaître pour son frère Carin sur deux inscriptions de Lambèse. Confronté aux documents littéraires et numismatiques, le texte tunisien montre l’importance des opérations militaires en Europe centrale à cette époque. Par ailleurs, l’absence de l’épithète Persicus maximus, pourtant attribuée aux deux frères par des inscriptions plus tardives, suggère que Numérien remporta peu de temps après une victoire persique, comme le dit d’ailleurs expressément le poète Némésien, contemporain des événements. Oxy. 984 became controversial among scholars since its first publication by R. S. Bagnall, B. W. Frier and I. C. Rutherford in 1997. The main problem that scholars had to face was the location of residence of the declarants who sent their census declaration – preserved in this roll – to the fiscal administration of Upper Egypt. R. S. Bagnall, B. W. Frier and I. C. Rutherford suggested the Greek city of Ptolemais in Upper Egypt as the place from where the census declarations had been gathered. On the contrary, O. Montevecchi and some of her students tried to demonstrate that the declarations comprised in the roll came from Lykopolis and not Ptolemais in Upper Egypt. The reopening of this debate is guided by a particular attention drew to onomastic, toponymic and institutional data gathered in the roll in a comparative perspective with data found in the corpus of Ptolemais. We argue that in treatises such as the Republic and the Statesman of Plato, the Cypriot Discourses of Isocrates (To Nicocles, Nicocles, Evagoras) and the Cyropaedia and the Agesilas of Xenophon, the fulfilment of the outstanding political expert is related to a specific political system : kingship. In the second part, we argue that Plato and Isocrates engaged in an intellectual dialogue which reveals, on the one hand, their common conception of the relationship between philosophy and royal power and, on the other hand, their profound disagreement on the practical aspect of political art. We focus on texts where the true statesman, who embodies an ideal type of power manages to put into practice his political knowledge to administrate the city : The Republic and the Statesman of Plato, on the one hand, and the Cypriot Discourses of Isocrates, on the other.
