A new inversion free variant of the basic fixed point iteration method for obtaining the maximal positive definite solution is established. Moreover, some necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for the existence of positive definite solutions of the matrix equation are obtained. In the end, one numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of our results.","PeriodicalId":170543,"journal":{"name":"2012 Fifth International Joint Conference on Computational Sciences and Optimization","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117090940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach utilizes the same field of view in different latitude to calculate the exact position of observed stars in the charge-coupled device (CCD) image plane. Based on the magnitude, right ascension and declination features, the catalog database of guide stars is established and works rapidly. The simulation results show that the proposed method could obtain a fast speed of selection guide stars and can implement conveniently when compared to current star atlas simulation method.","PeriodicalId":170543,"journal":{"name":"2012 Fifth International Joint Conference on Computational Sciences and Optimization","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126135450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This breadth of possibilities has led to an abundance of methods seeking to improve interactive deformation with real-time computation and intuitive use. Our goal is to make the design and control of deformations simpler by allowing the user to work freely with the most convenient combination of handle types. We construct three handle types: points, skeletons, and cages, points are quick to place and easy to manipulate, bones make some directions stiff, and cage is easy to control bulging and thinning in regions of interest. We provide planar shape deformation method based on Moving Least Squares and Mean Value Coordinate using linear functions including similarity and rigid transformations. These deformations are realistic and give the user the impression of manipulating real-world objects. For each of these techniques, we provide simple closed-form solutions that yield fast deformations, which can be performed in real-time. We demonstrate successful real-time deformation of planar shape.","PeriodicalId":170543,"journal":{"name":"2012 Fifth International Joint Conference on Computational Sciences and Optimization","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131955509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In China it is of great importance to develop a loss index for rapidly assessing tropical cyclone (TC) disaster loss. In this paper, a new composite loss index for TC landing on China is proposed after reviewing past methods. Firstly, correlation analysis is made between historical TC direct loss and variables reflecting time, space and intensity of TC. Secondly, a rapid loss index is developed which is composed of mean translation speed, duration on the land, mean radius of wind exceeding Beaufort force eight and maximum of maximum sustained wind speed, four variables selected stepwise in the former step, as well as two parameters and four constants. Finally, the parameters and constants in the index are set based on data of 97 TCs from 1990 to 2009. The correlation coefficient of the index to loss value is 0.74 and passes confidence level of 99%, which means it is effective for rapid damage assessment.","PeriodicalId":170543,"journal":{"name":"2012 Fifth International Joint Conference on Computational Sciences and Optimization","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126064661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study first indicates that the root cause lies in the spatial incoherence of the gradient of cost function caused by the irregular distribution of observations. Then an improved 3DVAR scheme based on diffusion filter is proposed to solve this problem. By employing diffusion filters to smooth out the erroneous signals implied in the gradient, the new scheme can incorporate scales into a gradient-based minimization algorithm and correct the observational information over different scales. For illustration, a two-dimensional idealized SST assimilation experiment is carried out to demonstrate the performance of the new scheme in extracting multi-scale signals. Results show that the proposed scheme has an obvious advantage over the traditional 3DVAR schemes and the multi-scale observational information, from longer to shorter wavelengths, can be extracted successively as expected, which suggests that enough considerations should be given to the scales information but not only to the rate of convergence when a minimization algorithm is employed in 3DVAR.","PeriodicalId":170543,"journal":{"name":"2012 Fifth International Joint Conference on Computational Sciences and Optimization","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121053112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
