During the last decade translation in foreign language teaching has experienced renewed interest. At present, research in this area focuses not so much on the advantages and disadvantages of translation, but on the question of how it can be optimally integrated and taught in higher education. We decided to look for an answer to that question in the didactics of translation and foreign language education. The result of our study is the teaching model that we present in this article. We also demonstrate how we applied this model during the practical FL-translation classes taught to third-year undergraduate students of the programme offered by the Dutch Chair of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin where translation is taught as part of the Dutch language learning programme.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124473537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The novel These are the Names 2012 depicts, on the one hand, a police commissioner’s need for faith in midlife crisis and, on the other, the journey of a group of refugees in the steppe in search for civilisation and salvation. On the edge of existence and without any point of narrative reference, the refugees kill one of them and then sacralise their act. Using a postmodern paradigm, in particular, the psychoanalytic theories and the theory of the scapegoat mechanism developed by René Girard, this paper attempts to show the connection between the lack of narrative and the birth of the ritual, which is later to become a myth. This underlines the dynamic nature of identity and its dependence on various narratives.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124768409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Once in a while efforts were made to expand the European knowledge of Japan and European scholars tried to explore the country despite the limitations the Japanese put on them. In current research little attention has been paid to the role the Japanese played in collecting information for the advance of European knowledge of Japan. This article discusses the role of the Japanese in the groundwork for Nippon 1832–1858, the description of Japan by Philipp Franz von Siebold 1796–1866. It attempts to answer the question of what this cooperation looked like, which areas of knowledge it affected and what the consequences of the cooperation were for both sides.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"10 13","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131436700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We aim to address the question of the nature of the parameters underlying word order in Dutch with particular reference to French. We assume that there are basically three parameters to consider: an iconic parameter, a linguistic parameter and a pragmatic parameter. The iconic parameter concerns the projection of general human habits on the word order. The linguistic parameter is related to the word orders which mark language-specific but situation-free syntactic or semantic relations between word groups. Finally, the pragmatic parameter addresses the link between the communicative situation and the language-dependent word order phenomena.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"9 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123135991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The grotesque shows an inverted world that is equally logical as the real world but governed by different norms and an upside-down morality. It is alienating and familiar at the same time. The grotesque texts reflect on the grand narratives of modernism. In this article, I focus on the image of the metropolis in three stories: De kudde van Claire, De gehouden hotelsleutel and De verloren huissleutel. Firstly, I define the concept of the grotesque. Then, I discuss van Ostaijen’s time in Berlin, before I turn to the metropolis and its inhabitants. They seem to desperately hold on to a logical and dual organisation of their city, lives and world, yet van Ostaijen undermines this dualistic world vision and positions his prose in the domain of ambiguity, in a labyrinth that may be the only answer to the question of the crisis imposed by reality.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122524057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a fact that relatively few Dutch and Flemish plays have been translated into Czech. The same is true of the actual production of the plays in Czech translation: these were rather sporadic throughout the whole 20th century, except for several plays by Herman Heijermans which were staged quite regularly in the first decades of the 20th century. This article surveys the different periods of the 20th century and provides an outline of the development of the Czech reception of Dutch and Flemish drama, including a dramatic mystification during the World War II.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127000681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article tries to find an answer to the question: which characteristics in van Doesburg’s poetry make him a literary constructivist, taking into account the premises of the original constructivism as it emerged in pre-revolutionary Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. This is done by analysing his poem entitled X-Beelden 1920 which could come close to constructivism. First, there follows a brief outline of some essential features of a constructivist work of art, explained by presenting an example from architecture, which at the time was considered the most important art also for literary constructivists. This idea was inspired by the non-Euclidean geometry and the theory of relativity. The new concept of time and space developed at the beginning of the 20th century was adopted by many artists, among them van Doesburg. Although he often reflected upon it in his programmatic essays, not enough evidence was found to prove the thesis that his poem X-Beelden 1920 could be constructivist and that the fourth dimension would find its way into his literary practice.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124563222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The legend of the Argonauts tells about a mythical journey in quest of the Golden Fleece. Working on his own version, Brakman relied on the epic poem The Argonautica written in the 3rd century BC by Apollonius of Rhodes. Brakman rewrote the myth of the Argonauts by placing the action in 20th-century Netherlands. The research aim is to discover in what way Brakman transforms the original story as set in The Argonautica and to compare these two versions. Brakman’s novel differs from the original in the changes to the plot or characters. Moreover, he combines the legend of the Argonauts with other mythical stories such as that of Oedipus, Odysseus, Theseus. Gérard Genette’s theory of intertextuality serves as the theoretical background of the article.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127641528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
