On globalisation and applications in linguisticsHow did Microsoft handle its language policy and the different language versions of its software? Why did Starbucks’ ginger coffee fail in Germany? Why did McDonalds change its menus in Europe? What is the cost of a mistake in a translation? In order to succeed globally, enterprises and organisations have to be able to adapt to local circumstances and deliver top quality, also in their multilingual communication. It involves investing in communication and translation. Language has its price and its value.In this paper, I want to point out the economic value of language. In a globalising world, the language sector has developed into an industry. The importance of language and communication in modern economies and societies and the need for language professionals are very often underestimated. Every company needs to have a language policy and has to invest in multilingualism and active support for translation and localisation. Recent developments in globalisation and localisation show that there is a huge need for professional language experts.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133872913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, during the Dutch Revolt 1568–1648, which led to the creation of the new Republic of the United Provinces, the two countries were close allies, united by a struggle against a common enemy – Spain.As a result of diplomatic cooperation, French travellers came to discover the young Dutch Republic. Early-modern travellers often kept a journal. From the beginning of the 17th century, such journals were frequently published, giving birth to a distinct literary genre.The analysis of the French travel writing offers an interesting insight into this new country as well as into the society and civilisation that developed in the Low Lands between 1600 and 1650. Religious coexistence or intellectual activities struck the French observers of the small but powerful Republic they discovered, leaving a vivid trace of the Dutch Golden Age, even beyond the reign of Louis XIV.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126828765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Third-year bachelor students were given the task of creating an alternative travel guide for Croatia. The educational goals of this project include an exercise in persuasive writing with stress on register and usage of various adjectives and a broader societal goal, the achievement of which was possible thanks to the fact that the students looked at a known subject from a different perspective. The context of the project is an exceedingly growing tourism sector in Croatia which can bring benefits not only to the students who can learn typical touristic jargon in Dutch but also to the country which can diversify its touristic offer. The project is embedded in the theory of persuasive writing. Ultimately, both the lecturer and the students evaluated the project and the methods used, finding them useful and repeatable.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130155701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a case in point, I analyse some of the syntactic properties of the Dutch want/omdat X construction. The erstwhile coordinating conjunction want ‘because’ and the subordinating conjunction omdat ‘because’ not only take clauses as complements, but nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, interjections, direct speech, and emoticons as well. I discuss three proposed analyses of the aforementioned constructions: an ellipsis, a preposition, or a category sui generis. Against the backdrop of these diverging proposals, I emphasise the need to understand linguistic categories such as parts of speech as intrinsically vague and prototypical. Moreover, I also briefly sketch the diachrony of want/omdat X and show that, contrary to frequent claims, it is not a recent innovation since its precursors can be found as early as in the 1960s.","PeriodicalId":168523,"journal":{"name":"Neerlandica Wratislaviensia","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121150127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
