There are no studies that assessed QoL during DM2. Our aim was to assess QoL and disease outcome in patients with DM2 after a five-year follow-up period. Material and Methods: Study originally comprised 49 DM2 patients at baseline. During the five-year period, seven patients died, eight were lost to follow-up, one patient moved, and one refused testing. The Short Form (36) Health Survey (SF-36) and Individualized Neuromuscular Quality of Life (INQoL) questionnaires were administered in 30 patients at baseline and at follow-up (47% males, 54±10 years old). Results: Patients who were retested had better Role Physical (RP) and General Health (GH) scores of the SF-36 and better weakness score of the INQoL compared to non-retested (p>0.05). After the five-year follow-up, none of the SF-36 and INQoL scores differed compared to baseline (p>0.05). Conclusion: QoL did not change in DM2 patients during a five-year period, as measured by both SF-36 and INQoL.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130296092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal of this study was to measure NO and compare serum values of NO with flow data in visceral blood vessels of the liver, spleen, kidney and intestine in patients with cirrhosis. Material and methods: This prospective study included 80 patients with cirrhosis of the liver. Doppler ultrasonography was used to assess flow velocity and resistive index (RI) in the hepatic (HA), right (RRA), and left renal (LRA), splenic (SA) and superior mesenteric artery (SMA). NO concentration was determined using the DetectX® Nitric Oxide colorimetric detection kit. Results: We found a statistically significant difference in the mean NO value in the group of patients without ascites compared to the ascites group, as well as in the group of patients with A stage in relation to C stage of cirrhosis (p <0.05). There is statistically significant negative correlation between NO and diameter, and maximal and minimal velocity in LRA. There is significant positive correlation between NO and minimal velocity in SMA. Conclusions: In this study, we found that patients with cirrhosis of the liver were exposed to significantly higher RI LRA, RRA, SA and HA. In patients with cirrhosis complicated by ascites and in those with end stage liver disease, the NO level was significantly higher. The concentration of NO had an effect on the diameter and flow rate in the LRA and flow rate in SMA.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"214 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122844887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During adolescence, a large number of young people become sexually active. Young people often do not have enough knowledge about sexuality, fertility control and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. It is important to comprehensively observe the sexuality of adolescents, as well as all the elements that contribute to the disruption of their reproductive health. Sexual behavior among adolescents is a complex problem, because facts shows that adolescents, despite being accurately and well informed, still behave inconsistently when it comes to protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. One of the main reasons seems to be insufficient amount of information and untimely use of contraceptives.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130933050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, cellular non specific esterases represent a special field of research, due to their role in a wide range of diseases, including atherosclerosis. This paper deals with linear correlation between relative a-naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE) score values and different degrees of carotid stenosis in patients with various morphological atherosclerotic lesions of this blood vessel. In our study analysis of ANAE cytochemical activity was performed in imprints of carotid plaques obtained from patients with different morphological groups of atherosclerotic lesions (n=100), as well as in control group of patients with kinking and/or coiling of carotid arteries (n=25). ANAE status was determined by cytochemical scoring system (Hayhoe and Quaglino's method modified by Cvetković, Radak and Đorđević Denić). Our results show that there is difference in relative score value of ANAE activity in carotid artery/plaque tissue between investigated groups of patients. One can, also, observed linear correlation between relative ANAE score values and different degrees of carotid stenosis in patients with various morphological atherosclerotic lesions of this blood vessel. This findings may indicate importance of ANAE in atherogenesis.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123188335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies of comorbidity of bipolar affective disorder and antisocial personality disorder showed relatively high prevalence rates of bipolar affective disorder in patients with antisocial personality disorder. In patients with bipolar affective disorder with the presence of antisocial personality disorder it is expected that there is a deterioration of the primary symptoms of the disease, particulary in manic phases, which is the reason of investigation of these phenomena, and why it is essential. Professional community has been familiar with the impact of neuroanatomic and neurophysiological factors on bipolar affective disorder as well as with antisocial personality disorder for more than two centuries. The most common neuroanatomic studies of patients with bipolar affective disorder and antisocial personality disorder are related to injuries and defects of the frontal cortex in general, whereas neurophysiological tests indicate deficits in brain hemispheres, a low level of excitation of the central and peripheral nervous system, abnormal EEG findings and reduced skin conductivity. Experts have paid special attention to similarities between the so-called \"frontal lobe personality\" and patients with comorbidity of these disorders. Analysing some of the basic characteristics of patients with \"frontal lobishness\" and comparing some research results of neuroanatomic and neurophysiological characteristics of patients with comorbid bipolar disorder and antisocial personality disorder, we try to distance ourselves from the trend that the etiological basis of these disorders is far away from the neurophysiological basis.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116097077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is categorized as vasculitis. The disease is known to be closely linked to smoking. Buerger's disease is a long-term debilitating condition because of the pain, the development of ulcers and gangrene, and the risk of amputation. Drugs effective on erythrocyte flexibility, agents acting on platelets, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and vascular reconstruction are among several therapeutic methods for Buerger's disease. However, the applied therapies are insufficiently effective. Still, the base of treatment is smoking cessation. Lately, cell therapy has offered us entirely new possibilities. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) treatment has been proposed as a novel approach for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for various ischemic disorders, including Buerger's disease. In 2016, the first MSC based therapy has received regulatory approval for the treatment of Buerger's disease in India. In March 2017, orphan designation was granted by the European Commission for autologous adipose tissue-derived MSC for the treatment of Buerger's disease. Novel therapeutic approach needs to be validated in the upcoming studies conducted in different clinical centers.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114909736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the ability of the human body to adapt to these conditions is exceeded, Acute Altitude Illness (AAI) develops. In the AAI spectrum, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) are usually described. Due to the high incidence of AAI and potentially high mortality in HAPE and HACE patients, a series of prophylactic and therapeutic measures are introduced as proposed by the current guidelines. The most important prevention of AAI is the low speed of ascent. The treatment of choice for HAPE and HACE is quick descent, supplemental oxygen if available, and medications such as acetazolamide, dexamethasone, nifedipine, and phosphodiesterase inhibitors.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116843137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are two general pathways for activation of apoptosis: the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways. While the intrinsic apoptotic pathway can be triggered by a cytotoxic accumulation of intracellular Ca 2+ , followed permeabilization of mitochondrial membrane and release of pro-apoptotic proteins into the cytosol from mitochondria, the extrinsic mechanisms of apoptosis include the participation of death receptors of tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), receptor superfamily such as TNFR-1, Fas, and TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand receptors (TRAIL-R) located on the plasma membrane. There is also the perforin-granzyme pathway that involves T-cell mediated cytotoxicity. All three pathways converge on the same execution pathway, resulting in DNA fragmentation, degradation of cytoskeletal and nuclear proteins, cross-linking of proteins, formation of apoptotic bodies, expression of ligands for phagocytic cell receptors and finally uptake by phagocytic cells. In this review we summarize data from recent studies focusing on apoptotic proteins that have been identified and molecular mechanisms of apoptosis. Understanding apoptotic mechanism might provide useful information and a new approach to prevention and development of new therapies for variety of diseases.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115359511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
