Developmental specificities are the cause of numerous differences in PedMS in relation to the adult form of multiple sclerosis (AoMS). In the field of basic and clinical neurological research, researchers' opinions are conflicted creating many questions and dilemmas, which suggest that PedMS is distinguished as a different and specific disease compared to AoMS. Having in mind the ability of the developing brain to compensate for damage, leading to partial recovery, the imperative of adequate treatment is the early diagnosis and early administration of immunomodulatory therapy.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123795269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Uri-nary tract infections are the second most common reason for antibiotic prescription in the USA. There is a need for alternative treatments that would help to avoid the use of systematic antimicrobials thus reducing the incidence of microbial resistance and side effects of the drugs. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of antibiotic ointment treatment in recurrent UTIs in women. We followed up 34 non-pregnant women with a previous history of recurrent UTIs who were instructed to apply antibiotic ointment Bacitracin/Neomycin, locally, on the external urethral meathus area, once a day, for 30 days. 88% of patients responded to the treatment, with no further recurrences in 67.6% of cases and there was a reduced (< 3 cases per year) recurrence in 20.5% of patients. Bacitracin/Neomycin ointment could be a safe, cheap and successful tool for recurrent UTIs in women. To our best knowledge, this is the first published pilot-study of topical antibiotic ointment usage in management and prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections. We need a double blinded, randomized study with a larger number of patients in order to collect more evidence to support this conclusion.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122464748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several large, prospective, epidemiologic studies have shown that this method accurately identifies prevalence and incidence of cardiovascular disease, independently of traditional risk factors. The value of this method is that it can be used to determine patients' vascular age. Measurement of carotid intima-media thickness reveals current atherosclerotic burden, it is feasible in a clinical setting and it can be integrated into coronary heart disease risk assessment models. Vascular age is substitution for chronological age and it is used in order to improve coronary heart disease risk prediction taking current carotid atherosclerotic burden into account.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125130210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to investigate the influence of gestational age and mode of delivery on oxygen therapy, and the occurence of complications. This retrospective study covered data about children diagnosed with transient tachypnea who were born during the period of one year. The duration of oxygen therapy and the assessment of complications were analyzed according to the mode of delivery and gestational age. In 77,3% of cases transient tachypnea was well-managed with the use of oxygen therapy in incubator. In relation to the mode of delivery and gestational age, no significant differences in the duration of different oxygen therapy types were observed. Two newborns developed persistent pulmonary hypertension, and one newborn had pneumothorax. Invasive respiratory support is not frequently used in transient tachypnea. Persistent pulmonary hypertension and air leak syndrome are possible but very rare complications of this condition.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126225273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This report describes the authors' experience and results of surgical treatment of ARA. The aim of this study was to analyse the functional outcome in patients following standardized surgical treatment of ARA. A total of 224 patients (115 girls and 109 boys) were treated from 1988 to 2015 and the data were analysed. All patients underwent a follow-up by the author. Postoperative anorectal function was evaluated based on the ability to have voluntary bowel movement, soiling and constipation. In cases of faecal incontinence bowel management program was applied. In our series of 224 operated patients 52 (24%) had faecal incontinence. Bowel management program was implemented in those patients, with a success rate of 90,6 % immediately after the treatment started in hospital, with a decrease to 83,7 % at home. In puberty success rate increased to 95%. Malone's antegrade enema procedure (ACE procedure) was done in 9 patients. It was successful in 100% of cases in the first year, with complication rate of 44% afterwards (conduit stenosis and leakage). Bowel management program offers significant benefits to children with faecal incontinence after surgical treatment of ARA. The ACE procedure can be implemented in patients after successful bowel management. Although patients are satisfied with ACE procedure, complications are very common.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"276 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127381783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigated the relationship between echocardiographic indices, functional status and NT-proBNP in patients with precapillary PH. Material and Methods A total of 23 patients were included in this retrospective study. Data were collected from routine risk assessments, including WHO FC, 6MWD, NT-proBNP, standard, strain and three-dimensional echocardiography. The echocardiographic data were analysed in terms of the patients' functional status as determined by WHO FC, 6MWD and NT-proBNP values. Results Patients in WHO FC III or IV had a shorter 6MWD [180 (interquartile range 85-240 m)] than patients in WHO FC I or II [409 (interquartile range 364-494 m), p=0.02)], while the difference in NT-proBNP was not statistically significant [FC I or II: 1297 (interquartile range 283-3196) versus FC III or IV: 343 (interquartile range 274-598) pg/ml, p=0.146]. There were inverse correlations between 6MWD and left and right ventricular longitudinal strain and a direct correlation between 6MWD and pulmonary acceleration time (r=0.73; p=0.001). NT-proBNP measurements were directly correlated with right heart dimensions and right ventricular strain and inversely correlated with pulmonary acceleration time (r=-0.70; p=0.004). Conclusion Standard and advanced echocardiographic indices of right ventricular structure, function and hemodynamics correlate with functional status and natriuretic peptide levels in a heterogeneous cohort of patients with precapillary PH and may be useful ancillary parameters in clinical practice.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125251049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most common cause of stroke is brain ischemia, which occurs in almost 85% of cases. Ischemia caused by thromboembolism is defined as permanently or temporarily decreased blood flow which prevents an adequate delivery of oxygen, glucose and other important nutrients, leading progressively to metabolic changes and cell apoptosis. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) can cause hypoxic - ischemic states of the brain or acute brain ischemia (ABI) leading eventually to stroke. The main cause of ABI as a result of CEA is cerebral hypoperfusion caused by clamping of carotid arteries, when hypoxia occurs.. Hypoxia per se is one of the triggers of complex physiological responses in the body, including the release of various mediators of inflammation. One of these inflammatory mediators is nitric oxide (NO), a free radical which has numerous physiological effects and also plays an important role in the immune response of the organism. However, NO may be very harmful and cause cell and tissue damage. The lack of literature data on the role of endothelial NOS (eNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS) during CEA, as well as the mechanisms of their regulation in ischemic conditions, suggest that intensifying future research in this field is very important. An insight into molecular mechanisms of iNOS activity and expression regulation will certainly help to develop new therapeutic strategies for treating harmful effects of free radicals, especially uncontrolled production of NO.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125871724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, obesity (especially central obesity) is considered to be a significant risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, hypertension and left ventricular dysfunction being some of them. The increased accumulation of fat tissue around the heart and in the blood vessels, the increased levels of oxidative stress and the inflammatory state mutually interact in the process of cardiovascular disease occurrence. Lowering the amount of body weight could significantly contribute to reduction of cardiovascular diseases and the subsequent complications.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114279004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To assess the potential association of these polymorphisms with biochemical, coagulation and inflammatory laboratory parameters in the group of mild and severe COVID-19 patients. GSTO1 and GSTO2 single nucleotide polymorphisms were determined by qPCR in 251 samples of COVID-19 patients. Biochemical, coagulation and inflammatory laboratory parameters of COVID-19 participants were procured from routine laboratory practice on the day of admission. Polymorphisms of GSTO1 and GSTO2 affect laboratory biochemical profile of COVID-19 patients. GSTO1*C allele was associated with increased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) (p=0.035), interleukin-6 (IL-6) (p=0.047), D-dimer (p=0.014) and lactate dehydrogenase LDH (p=0.002), whereas GSTO2*G allele was associated with CRP (p=0.033). COVID-19 patients homozygous for variant GSTO1*A allele and GSTO2*G had the highest levels of serum Fe (p=0.019, p=0.052, respectively). Our findings regarding the influence of GSTO1 and GSTO2 polymorphisms on inflammation and coagulation parameters might be of clinical importance. In future, these findings could aid in a more personalized approach for better recognition of patients prone to thrombosis and excessive immune response.","PeriodicalId":167411,"journal":{"name":"Medicinska istrazivanja","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128239446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
