The Manchester Orofacial Pain Disability Scale (MOPDS) is a questionnaire for assessing OFP.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Objectives</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the Chinese version of MOPDS in clinical populations, measurement invariance across different clinical statuses and sex cohorts.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Methods</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>This study recruited 387 OFP clinical patients. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) assessed the internal consistency and factor structure of the MOPDS. Pearson's correlation coefficient assessed external convergent validity. Composite reliability (CR), the average variance extracted (AVE) and the heterotrait–monotrait ratio (HTMT) were used to assess internal convergent and discriminate validity. Multigroup CFA explored the measurement invariance. T-test compared scores between sex groups across various clinical statuses.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Results</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>MOPDS in the clinical sample (Cronbach's α = 0.975, McDonald's omega = 0.975) had an acceptable internal consistency. CFA supported the two-factor structure in clinical settings with physical and psychosocial dimensions, which was applicable among different sexes and clinical groups. CR, AVE, HTMT, and correlation coefficient results with other scales proved the convergent and discriminant validity of MOPDS. Multigroup CFA supported scalar measurement invariance across different clinical statuses and sex groups. However, deficits in masticatory function, including subjective eating experience and masticatory performance, and the associations between pain and mastication have not been fully elucidated.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Objective</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>The current study aimed to investigate clinical pain, masticatory function, and their associations in patients with muscular TMD before and after treatment.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Methods</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>Twenty-seven patients with muscular TMD and 27 healthy participants (non-TMD group) were included. The groups were matched based on age, sex, and number of missing teeth. The TMD group completed assessments at two timepoints: the first time when they underwent TMD examinations, and 3 months later. All the participants underwent assessments of masticatory function, including subjective experiences of eating difficulty in daily meals and the use of adaptive eating strategies, as well as an objective assessment of masticatory performance. Additionally, current pain and muscle pain were assessed among TMD patients before and after treatment.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Results</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>(a) Before treatment, patients with muscular TMD had greater eating difficulty and used more adaptive eating strategies than non-TMD individuals but exhibited similar masticatory performance. (b) Patients with muscular TMD had improved masticatory performance, reduced current pain, and reduced muscle pain after treatment. (c) Before treatment, more severe pain was associated with worse masticatory performance among TMD patients. The association between muscle pain and masticatory performance was nonsignificant.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Conclusion</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>Patients with muscular TMD had worse masticatory experience than individuals without TMD but maintained adequate masticatory performance. This study explores perioperative changes in oral function in association with oral food intake in patients receiving gastric or oesophageal cancer surgery.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Methods</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>Patients who underwent surgery for gastric or oesophageal cancer at a university hospital and visited its outpatient dental centre for perioperative oral health care were recruited from August 2018 to March 2021. Several oral function parameters (lip-tongue motor function, tongue pressure, occlusal force, oral dryness and dysphagia score) were measured 1 day before and 7 days after treatment. The patients were categorised into the oral intake (PO) and non-oral intake (NPO) groups based on oral food intake status at 7 days post-surgery, and perioperative changes in oral function were analysed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test between the PO and NPO groups for both gastric and oesophageal cancers.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Results</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>Of the 298 gastric cancer patients and 71 oesophageal cancer patients analysed, 87% and 24% of patients, respectively, were capable of oral food intake at 7 days after surgery. In gastric cancer patients, oral hygiene, tongue pressure and dysphagia scores significantly worsened in the PO group. In contrast, oral hygiene, tongue pressure and dysphagia scores were all significantly worsened in the oesophageal cancer NPO group, but not in the PO group. Oral dryness and occlusal force did not change remarkably regardless of oral food intake status in these patients.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Conclusions</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>This study uncovered a significant decrease in oral function in oesophageal cancer patients without postoperative oral food intake, suggesting a potential association between impaired oral motor function and delayed oral intake recovery. OBC total score and item scores were compared between TMD patients with low pain–related disability, TMD patients with high pain–related disability and pain-free individuals without TMD, using one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni-adjusted pairwise comparisons.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Results</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>A total of 1581 patients participated, of whom 1304 were pain-free, 234 were TMD patients with low pain–related disability and 43 were TMD patients with high pain–related disability. Average OBC total scores were 12.2 ± 8.8 for pain-free non-TMD participants, 17.2 ± 10.9 for TMD patients with low pain–related disability and 23.16 ± 12.15 for TMD patients with high pain-related disability. Significant differences were found across all pairwise comparisons (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001). Patients received swallowing rehabilitation twice a week for 8 weeks. Patients were evaluated for swallowing using Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) with the Penetration-Aspiration Scale. Suprahyoid muscle thickness, tongue root area and hyolaryngeal elevation were measured by ultrasound before and after treatment. Furthermore, scales such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) swallowing safety scale, Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), Eating Assessment Tool-10 (EAT-10) and Swallowing Quality of Life Scale (SWAL-QOL) were utilised.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Results</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>The clinical and demographic characteristics of all three groups were similar at baseline (<i>p</i> &gt; 0.05). Positive improvements were identified following treatment in terms of muscle thickness, as determined by FEES evaluation of swallowing functions and ultrasound evaluations, in all groups (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05). In the PAS liquid food evaluation, the highest effect was found in the PNF group (<i>η</i><sup>2</sup> = 0.858). All ultrasound evaluations showed greater improvement in the PNF and CTAR groups compared to the conventional group (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05). The SWAL QOL also showed significant improvements in all groups after treatment (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05).</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Conclusion</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>In this study, all three groups contributed to swallowing rehabilitation, but the PNF group improved the most. However, the factors that may influence the received treatment remain unknown.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Objectives</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>To investigate the deviation between the indicated and received TMD treatment, and to identify patient and clinician characteristics that could influence the received treatment and the deviation from indicated treatment.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Methods</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>This retrospective cohort study collected data on the indicated and received treatment of 140 TMD patients. The treatment modalities were counselling, occlusal appliance (OA), physical therapy, psychological treatment, contingent electrical stimulation, ecological momentary assessment and medication. Potential predictors for receiving treatment and deviation from indicated treatment included patient-related factors such as TMD diagnosis, bruxism, psychosocial factors and clinician-related factors such as clinician's specialty level and experience.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Results</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>A good to perfect agreement between indicated and received treatments was observed for all treatment (84.3%–100%), except psychological treatment (66.4%). Received OA was associated with having a pain diagnosis (OR [95% CI] = 2.596 [1.189, 5.669], <i>p</i> = 0.017). In addition, received physical therapy was significantly associated with a pain diagnosis (OR [95% CI] = 3.876 [1.401, 10.721], <i>p</i> = 0.009), awake bruxism (OR [95% CI] = 1.730 (1.112, 2.690), <i>p</i> = 0.015) and clinician's level–being staff (OR [95% CI] = 6.068 [1.729, 20.553], <i>p</i> = 0.016). Received psychological therapy was significantly associated with a pain diagnosis (OR [95% CI] = 4.013 [1.077, 14.951], <i>p</i> = 0.038), sleep bruxism (OR [95% CI] = 1.381 [1.041, 1.830], <i>p</i> = 0.025), and physical symptoms (OR [95% CI] = 2.578 [1.561, 4.259], <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001). Furthermore, there is a lack of comparative studies between different TMD subtypes.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Objective</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>The aim was to explore the relationship between OHRQoL and the number of TMD symptoms in a community-based population.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Methods</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>Participants were recruited through convenience sampling in different communities. Data collected included demographic characteristics, oral health impact profile (OHIP-5), and TMD symptoms profile (5 T-TMD). The data were analysed by means of the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, the Kruskal–Wallis test, Mann–Whitney <i>U</i> test, and linear regression analysis. Furthermore, visual correlation images of TMD symptom numbers and OHIP-5 scores were plotted, and burst point analyses were conducted.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Results</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>A total of 1327 valid questionnaires were collected. The mean OHIP-5 scores for participants with either subtype of TMD were found to be significantly lower than those for participants without TMD symptoms (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05). The TMD subtypes with the most and least significant regression coefficients on OHRQoL were TMD Pain Symptoms and Dysfunction (PD, 6.75) and the presence of temporomandibular joint sounds (TS, 3.38). The more TMD symptoms, the higher the OHIP-5 score. The regression coefficient of TMD on OHRQoL exhibited a statistically significant increase when the number of typical TMD symptoms exceeded three (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05).</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Conclusion</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>The impact on OHRQoL was most pronounced when temporomandibular joint sounds were present in conjunction with pain or dysfunction. Although psychosocial and psychophysical factors significantly influence chronic pain, their combined impact on functional disability remains poorly understood.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Objectives</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>To investigate the influence of clinical, psychosocial and psychophysical variables on functional disability related to chronic pain in muscular TMD, utilising principal component analysis (PCA) and logistic regression.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Methods</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>A cross-sectional study with 77 women with painful TMD assessed clinical parameters (pain intensity, frequency, comorbidities and duration), psychosocial characteristics (stress, anxiety, depression, sleep quality and pain catastrophising) and psychophysical assessments (pressure pain threshold, mechanical pain threshold and conditioned pain modulation). PCA identified principal components, which were analysed using logistic regression to evaluate their association with chronic pain grades through the Graded Chronic Pain Scale.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Results</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>Five principal components were identified: psychosocial, clinical pain, duration and extent of pain, pain modulation and sensory. The clinical pain component significantly predicted functional disability across all chronic pain grades (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05). The psychosocial component was a strong predictor of higher disability levels, whereas the pain modulation component showed a protective effect at the highest disability grade.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Conclusion</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>Functional disability in TMD is influenced by a complex interplay of clinical, psychosocial and psychophysical factors. Among five components founded, clinical pain and psychosocial components emerged as the most significant predictors of functional disability, with pain modulation providing a protective role at higher disability levels. Central sensitisation (CS) is a significant factor in both chronic pain and temporomandibular disorders. Psychological aspects like anxiety and depression are known to exacerbate pain symptoms. However, the interplay between CS and these factors in CMMP remains unclear.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Objectives</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between CS, anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients with CMMP and to assess how they correlate.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Methods</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>A total of 206 patients with CMMP underwent a clinical examination following the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) and completed the Central Sensitisation Inventory (CSI), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaires. Pain severity was assessed using the Graded Chronic Pain Scale (GCPS) and the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Statistical analyses were conducted to examine correlations and group differences.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Results</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>Significant correlations were found between CSI and both PHQ-9 (<i>r</i><sub>s</sub> = 0.719, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001) and GAD-7 (<i>r</i><sub>s</sub> = 0.203, <i>p</i> = 0.003). A higher CSI score correlated with greater intensity of masticatory muscle pain. Women reported significantly higher scores for CS, anxiety and depression than men.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Conclusion</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>This study highlights a significant relationship between CS, anxiety, depressive symptoms and masticatory muscle pain. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), positive likelihood ratio (LR+) and negative likelihood ratio (LR−) were determined concerning the DC/TMD on axis I of muscle type, individually assessing the masseter, temporalis and medial pterygoid muscles.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Results</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>The ICTest achieved a sensitivity ranging from 41% to 88.9% in masseter and temporalis muscles with lower values for the medial pterygoid muscle and when referred myofascial pain subtype was analysed. Specificity remained stable in both situations, the subtype of myalgia and the muscles studied, ranging from 93.4% to 98.7%. The LR values indicated high variability depending on the muscle and type of pain, although LR+ and LR− were ≥ 7.08 and ≤ 0.76%, respectfully, in all cases.</p>\u0000 </section>\u0000 \u0000 <section>\u0000 \u0000 <h3> Conclusions</h3>\u0000 \u0000 <p>The ICTest is highly specific when studying the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles, with the latest one showing the poorest results.
