With the tragic news of two domestic violence related murder/suicides in neighboring towns, and the highly publicized conviction of a local man who had murdered his pregnant girlfriend, it seemed an appropriate time to address this crime once again from the pulpit. All too often the church has been silent about issues of family violence and sexual assault. The pastor and congregation, working in tandem with mental health professionals, became a sanctuary for the woman. This pastor's encounter with this woman became the catalyst for this congregation to become involved in ministry to trauma survivors. The lessons learned by this congregation can serve as guidelines for other congregations that wish to develop ministries for individuals who are recovering from the effects of severe sexual trauma. The article specifically addresses ways that congregations can relate to the issues surrounding the diagnosis of individuals with DID. However, practical applications for ministry in this article may be generalized to individuals who have other diagnoses related to sexual trauma histories.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127133572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It explores the relationships among a biblical “text of terror,” student reactions to it and feminist methodology and hermeneutics. Unwilling to simply set aside the scripture even with its violence, the author suggests that the application of feminist biblical hermeneutics to biblical texts illuminates not only the texts themselves but also the lives of contemporary women. The story of Jephthah's daughter resonates with the experience of many women who have suffered at the hands of a male relation, and can have liberating possibilities in the present if it is read as a profound critique of male power and its abuse.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130380115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pre and post training surveys of knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about DV were administered (n = 49) with six-month follow-up for six trainings. Item analysis was used to confirm item clusters and internal consistency for outcome mediating concepts using a new instrument and changes in individual items related to victim safety were examined. Results indicate statistically significant changes in clergy attitudes, beliefs about and knowledge of domestic violence, and knowledge about responses associated with victim safety.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133946438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
