The sermon shows how Jesus responds differently to victim and victimizer. Ministering to each party in distinct ways, Jesus comforts the victim and confronts the victimizers. The sermon encourages hearers to reflect upon the use and abuse of power in relationship to domestic and sexual violence, calling contemporary Christian communities to emulate Jesus by comforting victims and confronting victimizers and victimizing patterns.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133571933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Too often such violence is strategically downplayed in public discourse and quietly swept underneath church carpets. The book of Revelation provides a compelling framework for this sermon. I have chosen to center the sermon on Revelation 21:1–5 (NRSV), primarily because of the passage's homiletic possibilities as well as its climactic content, namely the announcement of God's intended wholeness for creation. In other words, by emphasizing the position of Revelation 21:1–5, which follows very disturbing imagery, the preacher can encourage hearers to actually do what much of the literary structure of Revelation does—to first confront the reality of violence, and then to put violence on notice that its reign in the world and in peoples' lives is penultimate. The theme of “Our New Earth and God's New Heaven” is that God is deeply concerned about human suffering. So great is God's conce...","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132739803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Murder and violence do not become the heroes of any story. When the Rabbi chose the words of Zecharia as the Haftarah, they rebuke the Maccabees, telling them that might and power are not the means to approach God and are not the means to approach each other. Those words resound in the ears and in the lives of abused women everywhere, as their mates use such might and power to control their spouses. Congregations, communities, and their leadership must be aggressive in discussing this issue and in being safe havens for victims of the community. This sermon was delivered on December 16, the first Sabbath of the holiday of Hannukah, at Beth Tzedec, a conservative synagogue in Toronto, on Sisterhood Sabbath. In the 18 months prior, three women in various stages of recovery from violent relationships had sought my counsel.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125314251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
