The World Below, by Sue Miller is used as a case study to imagine the elements in a forgiving relationship. In this novel the lines between victim and offender are blurred and the actions of accountability are shaped by differences in gender and power. Memory places a crucial role as enabling forgiveness. The natural grace of remembering is the key to a theology that embodies the practice of forgiveness.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"358 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115880818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result judicatory representatives, church members and even victims themselves assume blame for abuse perpetrated by trusted religious leaders. After defining terms and exploring the relationship between trauma and oppression, it examines whether survivors can collectively be viewed as oppressed and the implications of viewing traumatic experience as personal or political. The paper notes the work of early liberation theorists in their use of dynamic methodological approaches for the inclusion of the social sciences. Finally, it addresses liberation theology's increasing interest in spirituality and the use of small church communities as a place for spiritual discernment and critical reflection for those recovering from trauma and abuse.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130883737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Domestic violence not only endangers victims' physical and mental health, but also their spiritual health. In this study Protestant and Catholic ministers' beliefs and attitudes on the issue of wife abuse and the possible effects of their beliefs and attitudes on interventions with battered women were examined. Results showed that the degree of ministers' adherence to fundamentalist religious beliefs and the gender of the minister may affect the breadth of their definition of wife abuse, their attitudes toward gender roles, whether or not the minister asks women about wife abuse, and the degree to which a wife or husband is judged responsible in the abuse.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"s3-23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130100541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

About one in eight respondents reported having experienced physical abuse or neglect (12%) or sexual abuse (13%). Nearly one in five (19%) reported emotional abuse. In addition, 28% of respondents reported having experienced at least one of the three types. The survey yielded both qualitative and quantitative data for researchers, and proved that church-goers are not immune to issues of abuse.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"236 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123493822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
