It uses Psalm 55 as a springboard to explore domestic violence through the lens of a betrayal of a covenant relationship; defines domestic violence; lists reasons congregations often ignore domestic violence in their midst; examines Ephesians 5 and its impact on the concept of male privilege; provides alternate interpretation of text; suggests ways individuals and congregations can work to help victims of domestic violence; affirms congregation in its ongoing support of local domestic violence work; gives reasons for hope that attitudes towards domestic violence are changing; encourages congregation to remember God is with us in times of trouble, just as the psalmist was sustained by his faith in God.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125195624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The media was filled with stories of the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests and accusations of mishandling and cover-up by bishops. At the heart of the discussion was the issue of a loss of trust in the Catholic leadership. The researchers conducted a survey of undergraduates living in residence halls at Loyola University Chicago, a Jesuit Catholic university. The survey included twenty statements on topics currently being debated in the Church, including the statement, “I trust and respect the leadership of my religion.” Students used a Likert-type scale to express levels of agreement/disagreement with the statements. The researchers also conducted focus groups with Catholic students and university Ministry Staff. Survey results showed little difference between Catholics and non-Catholics in their responses to the item on trust and respect of leadership. Also, the survey showed a less than powerful r...","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114431305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Figley as “the cost of caring.” Clergy compassion fatigue (CCF) will be discussed in this article from both personal experience and current research, the latter of which has shown that religious leaders are viewed as attachment figures in times of great need. Clergy who facilitate trainings for the prevention of sexual misconduct need to be aware of the potential for a traumatic stress response when viewing films and hearing case studies in group discussions. Facilitators may avoid painful loneliness, loss of hope, and failure of confidence by sharing their reactions with others through appropriate supervisory sessions and by creating intentional self-care protocols as part of their ministry.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124760858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
