The aim of this study was to compare the variations of the expiratory volume and muscular power of inferior members, as a consequence of the period before competition training in kung fu athletes divided in two groups: one group with not linear model and the second group with linear model. Materials and Methods: The sample was composed of 14 kung fu athletes, with ages between 18 and 35 years-old. The evaluations occurred for two weeks at three moments. The training occurred in a frequence of two days during the week. One portable spirometry was used to survey the expiratory volume and the horizontal jump test was used to evaluate the inferior members force. Results: No significant differences were observed during the three moments of the spirometry evaluation and the horizontal jump. Discussion: There were not any differences between the periodizations models (p>0.05).","PeriodicalId":164994,"journal":{"name":"Fitness & Performance Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124223307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to compare the strength of the manual handgrip between left and right hands of men and women carriers of the Down syndrome (DS), in the cities of Itaperuna and Bom Jesus do Itabapoana, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Materials and Methods: In this comparative study of transversal cut, 28 subjects, all carriers of DS, moderately active, 12 of whom were females aging between 14 and 38 years (24.08±6.77) and 16 males aging between 14 and 44 years (27.13±8.83) were investigated. All subjects were enrolled in Associacao dos Pais e Amigos dos Excepcionais in their respective counties. Muscle strength was evaluated by dynamometry with the handgrip. Results: The analysis of the two-way variant showed significant difference (p<0.05) between genders (male versus female) on the right (p=0.001) and left hand (p=0.001), with higher values found in the male gender. Discussion: The male bearers of DS showed an average of the isometric strength of the handgrip superior to the female subjects in both right and left hands.","PeriodicalId":164994,"journal":{"name":"Fitness & Performance Journal","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126229838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been stated that the frontal lobe is responsible for the global and fine coordination, and might be more active than other areas of the cortex. In such a way, the present study aimed at identifying if the frontal lobe is more active than the somatossensorial area during tasks of global coordination. Materials and Methods: Braintech 3.000 was used (EMSA Medical Instruments, Brazil) for collecting the electroencephalographic signal. Results: The tests of global coordination, oculo-manual coordination were the electrode F3 (1.799±0.225mV) versus C3 (1.789±0.218mV), F4 (1.815±0.223mV) versus C4 (1.828±0.227mV), foot-eye coordination F3 (2.735±0.278mV) versus C3 (2.702±0.280mV) and F4 (2.821±0.267mV) versus C4 (2.763±0.258mV). None of the results presented any difference in the ANOVA one-way with 0.05 sensitivity. Discussion: The results showed great activity of the frontal cortex; however, there is an activation of the same magnitude in the somatossensorial area, suggesting an interregional coupling of information during tasks of global coordination.","PeriodicalId":164994,"journal":{"name":"Fitness & Performance Journal","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133739028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, this article objectified to identify the etiology factors and evaluate the gross motor function of students with cerebral palsy of the municipal public of Florianópolis (Santa Catarina, Brazil) system education. Materials and Methods: This study was classified as descriptive, diagnostic and transversal. Twenty-two subjects with cerebral palsy that obeyed the inclusion approaches were selected. The instruments used were antecedent form and the Gross Motor Function Measure-88. Statistical analysis was based on the descriptive and inferencial statistics. Results: The average age was eight years, with 63.3% of the female gender and 36.7% male. The prevalent palsy was quadriplegia (35.7%). The preponderant etiologic factor was perinatal asphyxia (42.8%). The larger percents of gross motor function occurred in the measures A, B, E and D of the ataxic cases, and the less percents in the measures C, D and E of the choreoathetosis cases. Discussion: Multiple etiologic factors on prenatal, perinatal and postnatal periods were identified. Lowest scores in the Gross Motor Function occurred in the quadriplegia and choreoathetosis cases, in which the girls had a total score greater than the boys in the average value, however, this difference was not significant.","PeriodicalId":164994,"journal":{"name":"Fitness & Performance Journal","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114405200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
