Jan Siedlecki. It is a relatively large collection of nominations the centre of which contains a collection of the names related to God the Father, successively to the Son of God Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. There are also frequent references to “Lord, Creator, Lamb of God”. The researchers (2390 surveys) wereconductedamong 1195 students from 8 Polish universities: Rzeszów University, University of Silesia, University of Wrocław, Jagiellonian University, Universityof Lodz, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and Maria Curie- Skłodowska University in Lublin. Theresearchmaterialcovers a totalof 2946 units. Asequivalentsofthewords Pole/Ukrainian, studentsgivenamesofgeographicalcategorization–mieszkaniec Polski/ mieszkaniec Ukrainy and of politicalcategorization – obywatel Polski/obywatel Ukrainy and others. Toname a Pole, theyproposethewordsrodak, krajan, naszrealizingthe„native-foreign”opposition. There are oftenequivalentsofresearchedethnonymsintheformofdiminutives, metaphorsandanthroponyms, e.g. Polaczek, patriota, cebulak, cebula, Janusz, Grażyna, Lach. Calling a Ukrainian, such student terms dominate: sąsiad, obcokrajowiec, cudzoziemiec, rusek, ruski, Ukrainiec and others. The definition of a Ukrainian as a neighbor appears more often in the group of students from Rzeszów and Lublin and rarelyfrom Poznań, Katowice, Wrocław, Toruń, Kraków and Łódź. The spaсу location of Toruń, Łódź, Poznań and Wrocław in the West of Poland determines the perception of a Ukrainian by the students from these cities in the category East – West: ci ze wschodu, osoba ze wschodniej granicy, osoba ze Wschodu and others. Their derivative basis consists mainly of Old Testament names in different (linguistic) forms, but also in Yiddish form. Among the most common were Jacob, Moses and Izaak. The anthroponyms of the Jews in the territory of Piotrków were formed with suffixes of different origin, mainly of Slavic and German descent. Jewish name-based surnames represent the cognitive categories of person and kinship. The prototype model of surnames derived from male names is: biblical first name + suffix -owicz/-ewicz and derived from female names is: yiddish first name + suffix -ski.","PeriodicalId":162310,"journal":{"name":"Słowo. They contain knowledge about the environment of our existence - its formation, wealth, history, and even about spatial or social relations. The purpose of this article was to obtain and analyse naming material (names and their folk etymologies) from seventeen villages located within three rural communes on both sides of the San River. The analysis was based on comparison of folk and scientific etymologies. This allowed to answer the questions of how current residents of the former ethnic borderland understand foreign names in their localities, what kind of conceptualisation of the world emerges from folk etymologies, and whether the river San as a natural obstacle significantly influenced the linguistic concepts of its right and left-bank residents. The analysis of toponyms indicates that in rural communities of the studied area, proper names were often motivated by historical, settlement and topographic specifics. Therefore, simple motivation dominates here: creators most often referred to physical properties such as shape and appearance. From other aspects, location, function and local residents were often considered. The relatively high percentage of names with foreign phonetic influences, largely incomprehensible to their contemporary users, stems from the turbulent history of this area and the overlapping Ruthenic, Slovak and other influences. No statistically important differences in conceptualisation of the world between the residents of the east and west sides of the river were detected.","PeriodicalId":162310,"journal":{"name":"Słowo. Lexical connotations as well as not firmly fixed textual connotation proved significant for analysing the modern perception of the Church. I examine what connotations are present in the texts about the Church and which of them, due to their frequency of appearance and coherence may prove useful in establishing the Church’s place in the sphere of value. Among the other methods, I am applying the categorisation by prototype for the research. Obviously it explores only a model and a point of reference, for it is impossible to faithfully transfer methods used by synchronic linguistics to the study of historical material. This year saw the publication of Magdalena Danielewiczowa’s work entitled „Aspekt tematyczny w strukturze informacyjnej wypowiedzi. Rozszerzanie i integracja wiedzy” [“The Thematic Aspect in the Informational Structure of Utterances. How Knowledge is Made Broader and Integral”], whose author suggests that the thematic-rhematic structure should be extended to cover expressions which indicate the aspect which is expressed by the theme – we are dealing with the exponents of the thematic aspect (thematisers). A thematiser, which in reference to the Polish language Magdalena Danielewiczowa posits in the first place, is jako, a functional expression which historically occupied the first place among the exponents of comparison. Which elements are shared by jako in both functions? In typical comparative constructions (gradational and non-gradational ones) we compare two objects, A and B, and we compare them in reference to some property (Z). In a construction in which jako performs the function of a thematiser, we characterise A (theme) in order to say something about A in comparison to itself (A1), although in a different role; obviously we do this also due to the property Z: Jan (A) jako urzędnik (Z) jest skrupulatny, ale poza urzędem Jan (A1) jest strasznym bałaganiarzem. [Jan (A) is diligent as an employee (Z), but outside his office-related work Jan (A1) is a terribly messy person.] In both cases we may speak about characterisation, on the one hand by means of seeking a similarity between A and B, and, on the other hand, by means of attributing some property to A. In the further part of her discussion, the author attempts to explain why the comparative jako was transformed into jak (the disappearance of ~o), and how jako in turn, prevailed, in the function of a thematiser, in the competition with other functors.","PeriodicalId":162310,"journal":{"name":"Słowo. Nigger] from the earliest times up to the present in order to prove the thesis that the word, burdened with bad connotations in the Middle Ages, is humiliating and offensive today. This is evidenced by nineteenth-century uses in the sense of ‘slave, servant’. Today, for many, especially young people, it has lost its original meaning, and as the synonym of the words: bambo, bambus [bamboo], asfalt [asphalt], syfiarz [sloven], brudas [slob], złodziej [thief], gangster [gangster], niewolnik [slave], prostak [gaby] is associated with backwardness, primitiveness, animalization and banditry. {"title":"Deonimy w listach emigracyjnych Joachima Lelewela pisanych do przyjaciół i znajomych","authors":"Violetta Jaros","doi":"10.15584/slowo.2022.13.19","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15584/slowo.2022.13.19","url":null,"abstract":"The purpose of the study is 1) to introduce the vocabulary created by deonymization, which Joachim Lelewel used in his correspondence with friends, 2) to identify the proprietary grounds motivating them, 3) to determine which words may have had the character of individualisms, 4) to indicate the mechanisms of deonym formation, and 5) their function in the studied letters. The collected deonyms inscribed in the texts of the letters, having to do with Lelewel’s daily life and his scientific and political activities, can be interpreted in the category of cultural signs reflecting 19th century reality through references to the historical, moral or cultural background of the era. The analyzed deonyms perform several functions in the studied correspondence: nominative, locative (chronologically and spatially), emotive-valuative, autobiographical and masking.","PeriodicalId":162310,"journal":{"name":"Słowo.
