The vision of criminal Poznań is primarily an effect of the characters’ behavior, their ancestry, disposition and contemporary trends in urban naming. From the perspective of the genre, urbanonyms allow us to present the capital of Wielkopolska as a peaceful city, and on the basis of an contrast – an unknown and dangerous space, famous for its crime. It is worth noting, however, that the spaces usually differ depending on a specific district. The stereotype of a clear division into good and bad districts is broken here, and the metropolis – in contrast to a strongly individualized space – on the other extreme presents itself as an almost anonymous space, similar to any other, larger Polish or European city. On the one hand, it results from contemporary civilization changes and the intermingling tendencies of glocalisation and globalization, but on the other, it can be an expression of the transformation of a culture in which we value evil and want to be at its center (provided that we are sure that in the end we will witness the victory of good).","PeriodicalId":162310,"journal":{"name":"Słowo. Together with his troops he fought on the Italian front during World War I. The diary he kept is full of local names, both Polish and Slovenian, as well as German and Italian. The article presents the onymic awareness of the author of the diary, examines various forms of toponyms that sounded foreign to the soldier from the Podkarpacie region, emphasizing the structures of Slovenian (e.g. Brestovica pri Komnu – Brestowice, Brestawice, Brestowica) and Italian (e.g. Medeazza – Medyjaca, Madyaco) local names. The text also takes account of the history of onomastic research on proper names contained in the diaries. The article is a contribution to further onomastic analyses of other onymic categories of peasant diaristic texts.","PeriodicalId":162310,"journal":{"name":"Słowo. Conventionalised metaphors (related to war, fight, nightmare, disaster, fear, illness) allow for creation of hyperbolic headlines. Military metaphors constitute the most numerous group where reality is presented as a battlefield (for example description of a purchase, African swine fever, election campaign, protest, road accidents, sport). Whereas, litotes is not only depicted by figures of speech such as personification, comparison, but also irony, colloquialisms and intersexuality. Although the material was extracted from a regional journal the analysis indicated that there are 43 percent more examples of general Polish headlines in the pages of “Gazeta Pomorska” with the use of hyperbole and litotes than those of regional origin. The analysis suggests that headlines of regional articles are frequently purely informative in nature without rhetorical aspects.","PeriodicalId":162310,"journal":{"name":"Słowo. Onomastic material includes 102 names taken from the funeral home web pages and from the survey that was carried out by people working in funeral industry. The collected material comes from the period 2019–2022. The analyzed names of coffins were classified into 12 meaning groups. Out of them the most popular are the names originating from mythology, e.g. “Trumna Hades”, shape of the products, e.g. “Trumna Łodka” or even from particular countries, e.g. “Trumna Amerykanka” that were created through the process of transonimisation or onimisation. Particular attention is paid to the structure of what may be termed as medonyms, more precisely to the ways in which personal names are placed in radio programme titles, as well as to the arrangement of roles between the broadcaster and the audience of the programme (i.e. the degree of dependence of the individual on the audience, which is revealed through the media name). An attempt was also made to explain what is the purpose of using anthroponyms to create titles of radio programmes, and a question was asked about the frequency of the occurrence of the analysed names in the programmes of selected radio stations.","PeriodicalId":162310,"journal":{"name":"Słowo. {"title":"Pogranicze językowe i kulturowe w nieoficjalnym nazewnictwie powiatu jarosławskiego w województwie podkarpackim","authors":"Ewa Oronowicz-Kida","doi":"10.15584/slowo.2021.12.13","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15584/slowo.2021.12.13","url":null,"abstract":"The purpose of the article is to present the linguistic and cultural borderland in unofficial anthroponyms and microtoponyms from the district of Jarosław, whose eastern border largely coincides with the border of Poland and Ukraine. Borderland means the sphere of contact and coexistence of various phenomena on the border of geographical neighborhood, but also on the level of language and cultural properties as well as the linguistic and civilizational awareness of the inhabitants of a given area. The analyzed names are characterized by East Slavic and South-East borderlands’ influences, visible mainly in the field of phonetics and word formation, making these names broadly understood linguistic hybrids, i.e. linguistic forms combining phonetic and morphological elements of different languages. The best persistent East Slavic linguistic features in both unofficial anthroponyms and microtoponyms are phonetic properties in the form of g and h pleophony and substitutions, and hybrid derivatives. The constant presence of Ukrainian and South-East borderlands’ lexis and words semantically related to East Slavic cultural and religious realities also deserves attention. All this testifies to the ethnic, social and cultural roots of people living in this borderland.","PeriodicalId":162310,"journal":{"name":"Słowo. The research material comes from fanpage Z24 on Facebook, therefore, the specificity of the Internet language is included in the study. On the basis of a review of the literature related to communication ethics 34 indicators of ethical language are extracted, formed in the key code. To prove the scientific value of key code in the analysis of communication ethics the content of Z24 was described from the perspective of 14 determinants. It was found that aspects of communication on the Z24 are both ethical (use of polite phrases, expressing kindness, using factual arguments and respecting communication partners as equal) and unethical (manifestations of hatred, mockery and insult, using personal arguments, vulgarizing statements). A two-fold “us-them” opposition was also identified: 1) members and people from outside the organization, and 2) people from inside the organization representing different views.","PeriodicalId":162310,"journal":{"name":"Słowo. The author of the article analyzes the words related to the Silesia region, selected form of the poems which are lexical markers of Florian Śmieja’s Silesian origin. He discusses their structure, etymology, lexical meaning and function in the analized texts. Presented observations lead to the conclusion that the linguistic fascinations of mother tongue are constantly present in his narrative and life. The poetess depicts the process of aging from the individual and personal perspective. She highlights the nontraditional ways of how women’s aging is perceived. The analysis of Świrczyńska’s poetic works has been conducted with linguistic methods based on cognitivism (profiling) and structuralism. In Anna Świrczyńska’s poems, time and passing are one of the elements of life.
