It is argued that the latest developments in cognitive linguistics as well as in psycholinguistics do offer an elaborate account of the nature and the structure of human language capacity, and, as such, they can constitute a source of inspiration for glottodidactics research. By contrast, despite significant achievements over the last decades, our knowledge of the language-mind interface is still elementary, speculative, and does not prove to be significantly relevant for glottodidactics.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122610902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present paper reports on the longitudinal case study of a Polish-Japanese family residing in the UK and the development of their family language policy. Through a specific focus on narrative data and observations, obtained in two cycles of research in 2014/15 and 2017, it illustrates the parents’ attitudes towards their minority languages (Polish and Japanese, respectively), the majority language (English) and their child’s multilingualism. Irrespective of the parents’ positive attitudes towards multilingualism and their declared efforts to raise a trilingual child, the original study (E. WąsikiewiczFirlej 2016) showed the dominance of the majority language in the family, and pointed to substantial difficulties in the maintenance of minority languages, which was mostly explicated by the child’s agency in shaping FLP. The results of the first stage of the study (2014/15) have been juxtaposed with the data obtained in 2017 in order to verify the parents’ declared vs. actual language management, as well as the dynamics of FLP over time. The findings have confirmed the assumed dynamic character of the family’s language policy, which is shaped by a range of constantly changing micro and macro factors, contributing to a better understanding of FLP sociolinguistic ecology.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130735742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study was to compare, from the neurolinguistic point of view, selected language activities: retrieving a list of previously memorized words and phrases, retrieving previously memorized short texts, and creating a spontaneous oral statement in a foreign language (L2), in order to assess their potential impact on the development of communicative competence of L2-learners. The study is aimed at answering the following question: the processing of which kind of linguistic information, i.e. in the form of individual phrases or in the form of a text, is more similar to the act of spontaneous speech from the neurobiological perspective. It was assumed that the activity which is more similar to such speech act will probably be more conducive to the development of students' communication skills in the process of learning a foreign language. The results of the study demonstrate that work with a coherent text in foreign language learning and teaching can be more beneficial than working with lists of separate words or phrases.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132294277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also aims to examine how Polish readers identify the multilingual references to the French and Portuguese culture and if they are able to capture all the changes of the setting and the relations between the protagonists. The article studies the advantages and disadvantages of the presence of multilingual elements in the translated text, the problems related to the change of the recipient and resulting from the cultural differences between the readers of the original text and of the translation. It also focuses on how the extra textual information is transmitted through the use of illustrations and colours and whether it is universal or not.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125380106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It starts by presenting the studies on tracing eye movements in reading in the end of the 19th century and the creation of the first eye trackers. The further part presents how the eye tracking technology was improved in the time of film recordings, ceasing to be invasive for the eyes. It also shows how in this time the main focus of research shifted to practical aspects due to the development of the behaviourist movement in experimental psychology. The third phase starts in the 1970s, when researchers turned more towards the dependence between the perception and mental processes. It was linked to the establishment of a theoretical and methodological basis for cognitive psychology.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121338257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
