Punch tools were frequently reused for multiple paintings, sometimes from different workshops, and the impressions they leave behind support a variety of art-historical investigations by evidencing workshop practices, attribution, contemporary connections, and more. In particular, classifying punch marks in paintings enables comparisons with extensive indices that were created by art historians/conservators Erling S. Skaug and Mojmír Frinta over the course of several decades.</div><div>In this paper, we explore the potential of automated methods for punch mark classification. As in most image analysis tasks, deep neural networks are state of the art. Indeed, convolutional neural networks can produce highly accurate classification results, but often falter when confronted with images from paintings not represented in the training data. This is a particularly relevant problem in cultural heritage applications such as punch mark classification, where the size of training sets is typically small. For this reason, we have explored domain generalization methods, which aim to maximize accuracy on some target domain (images from a painting unseen in training data) using various source domains (images from paintings used for training). We find that, despite their promise, domain generalization methods (with explicit domain labels) unfortunately often offer little advantage over baseline convolutional neural networks (without explicit domain labels).</div><div>Our results provide insight on the capacity and limitations of several off-the-shelf deep learning methods to automatically classify punch marks. Conversely, the structure and the challenges of punch mark images provide an interesting test case for insight on domain generalization methods.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":15480,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cultural Heritage","volume":"72 ","pages":"Pages 226-236"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143527366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Limitations in data acquisition, particularly with more cost-effective and accessible devices, often restrict measurements to a sparse number of locations. This necessitates the employment of interpolation methods to extrapolate values for the unmeasured positions within the image. This paper introduces XMapsLab a software solution designed to facilitate the generation and examination of maps. XMapsLab utilizes GPU-optimized versions of interpolation methods, achieving speed enhancements ranging from one to two orders of magnitude. Such improvements markedly expand the capabilities of professionals to engage with and analyze data in real-time. Additionally, the software incorporates various interpolation methods, enhancing the robustness of the results and bolstering the confidence of experts in their conclusions. The real-time functionality of XMapsLab enables the development of new procedures for exploring hypotheses regarding the presence and distribution of pigments. This includes the integration of boolean and numerical operations for map combination, allowing users to investigate hypotheses and conditions in a direct, potent, and intuitive manner. The software developed is freely available and open-source, underscoring our commitment to supporting the broader Cultural Heritage community.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":15480,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cultural Heritage","volume":"73 ","pages":"Pages 1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143519067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research investigates the application of computational color analysis techniques to Mark Rothko's abstract paintings, focusing on his unique approach to color as a means of expression. Utilizing K-means clustering and Delta E metrics, this study systematically analyzes the color compositions in Rothko's paintings, allowing for a detailed examination of color relationships and transitions. By quantifying color variations and identifying subtle hue variations, the manuscript aims to examine the underlying structures that contribute to the global resonance of Rothko's art. The findings offer valuable insights into the artist's methodology, highlighting the significance of color dynamics in shaping viewer experiences, while also enhancing understanding of art through a mathematical and computational lens. The analyses also provide a framework of color dynamics and material changes, enabling more accurate preservation, and restoration of artworks over time, ensuring their integrity and original visual impact are maintained.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":15480,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cultural Heritage","volume":"72 ","pages":"Pages 194-204"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143454469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The following key points are discussed. These points were highlighted in the course of the analyses of 180 samples of archaeological and historical fabrics dyed with various dyes analysed in our laboratory using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS/MS). These key points are: (i) the sample preparation procedure that does not lead to the changes in the composition of the sample and, consequently, to distortions of the analysis results; regardless of whether strong or weak acid was used to hydrolyze, the conjugated compounds were not completely degraded, and it was still possible to identify the source of the dye; (ii) the representativeness of the sample; the percentage of dye in the analysed sample could be a significant factor in the interpretation of the results and it seems to be more important than the sample size; (iii) the possible cause why the materials used for the preservation of fabrics during the conservation works may affect the credibility of the analysis; the additives in fibre treatment or the dyeing process could be identified, and they can interfere when the high-sensitivity instrumental analysis is used; (iv) the problem of the quantification of the residual dye in the archaeological and historical fabrics, especially when working with degraded fabric; furthermore, it is essential to consider that the quantitative determination of the dye in the sample reflects its concentration in the solution; (v) the reliability of the results strongly depends on the fabric degradation; it is recommended that samples be taken, if feasible, from well-preserved sections that have not been subjected to contamination or ultraviolet radiation exposed.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":15480,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cultural Heritage","volume":"72 ","pages":"Pages 180-190"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143446048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"综合性期刊","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
