These all-pervasive genteel academic exertions are deeply problematic because they discourage the study of the taboo sites of literary exclusions. If the humanities are to regain an intellectually rigorous engagement with literary works, then they must make new forays into the study of literary exclusion. One way to think of exclusion in early modern literature is to acknowledge that racial and religious exclusion during that time was not a simple act of “discrimination”-rather, these ostracisms were practiced sincerely for the public good. Following Anne Lake Prescott's work, I propose another interesting approach to study exclusion in Shakespeare's works: literary “slime” that induces laughter in community-reinforcing ways. When Shakespeare's Portia refers to Morocco's “complexion of a devil,” she juxtaposes it with the ideal white European skin. When Benedick says, “If I do not love her [Beatrice], I am a Jew,” he wills to act as a loving Christian as opposed to what the Elizabethan culture perceived as heartless Jews. In the last section, I submit why the study of literature and its culture's exclusionary representations and politics should be the exciting new direction for the humanities.

Such accounts have previously received only isolated attention because they are challenging to locate and gather en masse. An extensive body of data about the responses of “ordinary listeners” (as opposed to professional critics) thus offers new ways of approaching music-related research. The underlying information system relies on linked data, including a knowledge base that is itself a linked dataset. The data management workflow supports both systematic contributions from the project team and crowdsourced input where knowledgeability and completeness of information can be expected to vary widely. The database demonstrates the potential of a mass of data as a robust evidential base for our understanding of how music functions in society. It also contributes a large body of structured data to the global machine-readable portion of the Web that is the Linked Data Cloud. Through crowdsourcing, it taps into knowledge that exists beyond the academic world. The project not only contributes directly to the global linked data knowledge base, but also prompts new directions for anyone investigating the reception of music, including performers, teachers, social historians, musicologists, psychologists and those working in the creative industries.

Both traditions converge to form a new phenomenon via the assimilation process of the modern era. The phenomenon led to the formation of an art tradition - a premise both assumed and proven - wherein the form is indicative of the times seen in the light of conflicting cultural and ideological knowledge vis-a-vis the Islamic and \u0000secular values. However this phenomenon can be seen as an integrative element between various racial entities of early post-modern Malaysia for more than a decade. It also gave rise to the commitment of certain quarters to create a work of art that imbues the Islamic ideology, a reactive alternative to the variety of trends and art forms occurring in Malaysia then and generally viewed as lacking in art philosophy as compared to the Islamic Tawhid philosophy depicted in calligraphy paintings especially when associated with the holiness and preciseness of its meaning. To some \u0000artists, the art of calligraphy painting is a preferred choice because of the fulfillment in depicting mature and deep spiritual experience. All these observations led to the \u0000need to investigate the calligraphy art works in Malaysia more seriously in the form of a proper research endeavour, in order to enable its history as an art form be given \u0000due attention as one that is precise and able to promulgate the Malay national identity.

The talk will be supported by a series of examples of surface marking of titanium by laser for the production of jewellery objects and the effects caused by heat delivered to the titanium substrate. The research demonstrates how laser controlled oxide growth on titanium can be used as an artistic tool by producing precisely defined colours according to different parameter setting. The overriding success of this work, however, is the pathway created from art practice into engineering research, taking advantage of methodologies from both cultures, resulting in an improved communication and understanding between these extreme disciplines. The paper is also concerned with the distance created between artist and technology, the importance of crossing boundaries and taking risks beyond normal personal practice in order to join in the investigation of global current debates, for example climate change. Recent studies have described this phenomenon from several different perspectives (Sales, 2010; Cavadi, 2009; Dino, 2006) however, there have been fewer attempts to consider language and behaviour as a specific context in which to analyse religious references. The object of my research is to describe the role that religion plays at micro and macro-social level of interaction between the mafia leaders and the lower echelons of the organization. In particular, it refers to approaches which emphasize the role of rituality and performativity in constituting social structure and identity, to explore the effects that the religious language and behaviour of the mafia bosses have on the rest of the organization. This presentation focuses on the religious symbolism and rituals that characterize the initiation ceremony of the Sicilian mafia to analyze the effects that it has on the initiates. The methodology mainly employs anthropological approaches to ritual (Van Gennep 1909; Turner 1969, 1974), sociological theories of religion (Durkheim 1961) and Cultural Performance theories (Turner, 1986; Schechner, 2002) as its theoretical framework. The data are derived from judicial papers and the testimonies of mafia defectors. Such an approach could prove particularly useful in the study of the cultural universe of the mafia and, above all, it could provide a better understanding of the enduring ability of Cosa Nostra to adapt to changing times whilst maintaining consistent 'moral' codes and practices.

This division has prevailed in both humanities and social-behavioral sciences until recent challenges by critical realism and synthesizing trends. In fact, a growing number of meta-theoretical speculations have recently advocated a conciliatory orientation conceptualizing social reality in terms of an interaction between social agency and social structure. However, a genuinely integrative trend is required to incorporate the ideational aspects of social realities into its agenda as a third dimension by acknowledging an ‘autonomous ontological status’ for ideation in relation to human agency and social structures. Nevertheless, due to current global changes and the consequent emerging modes of consciousness, there is a need to reformulate our notions of knowledge and cognition under a new concept; what I refer to here as ‘social ideation’. ‘Social ideation’ sits within a multidimensional and comprehensive model in which the complexity of the concept and the autonomy of its ontological status are well recognized. Finally, the article outlines a new approach, titled ‘social ideation studies’ (SIS) which constitutes a meta-theoretical base for integrative and interdisciplinary studies.
