They cause damage to oral health and may act as a source of bacteria causing other diseases such as endocarditis, pneumonia and arthritis. A cross section study was conducted to determine the current status on the occurrence of dental diseases in dogs attended at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Teaching Animal Hospital in Morogoro, Tanzania. A total of 87 dogs were examined macroscopically for the presence of dental diseases. Dogs examined in this study ranged from medium (93.1%) to large (6.9%) sized, and up to 73.6% were mixed-breed. The minimum and maximum ages of the dogs were 6 and 72 months, respectively, with majority being females (60.9%). The proportions of intact, spayed and castrated were 92%, 5.8% and 2.3%, respectively. Of the 87 dogs examined, 62.1% had different kinds of dental diseases. The frequently observed dental diseases were; dental deposits (43.7%), missing teeth (24.1%), periodontal disease (20.7%), dental attrition (16.1%), and dental abrasion (10.3%). Further, it was noted that none of the dogs had been previous underwent routine dental check-up or anaesthetised for dental cleaning. This study indicates that dental diseases are frequent in dogs attended at SUA Teaching Animal Hospital. Therefore, it is recommended that routine dental examination should be performed in dogs presented at the Teaching Animal Hospital. Further, there is a need for educating dog breeders and owners on the importance of dental home care.","PeriodicalId":15254,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biology and Life Science","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135258400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multistage cluster sampling was done. Only resident families of Khyber Agency were selected. Children of age 04 to 05 years were enrolled in the study after consent from a parent/ guardian. Children with major comorbidities, non-consenting parents/ guardians, and children transfused in the last 24-48 hours were excluded from the study. 05 ml of blood was collected from each child. G6PD qualitative tests were performed in the field; rest of the tests were carried out later at Dabgari Garden “”in lab. PCR was processed according to protocol. Data were analyzed by SPSS 26.0.Results:  A total sample size of 177 respondents were initially investigated through a qualitative test for G6PD deficiency. Among these, only 4 (2.3%) respondents were found to be G6PD deficient, The PCR analysis depicted that among 177 respondents, 31 (17.5%) were found to be mutant. Among these, 26(84%) were heterozygous, while 5 (16%) respondents were found to be homozygous. The PCR analysis further revealed that among the 5 homozygous respondents, 3 were found to be G6PD deficient, as also depicted by the qualitative test. One of the homozygous respondents, although found deficient by qualitative test, showed no Mediterranean mutation.Conclusion: Most studies done in Pakistan are hospital-based and the method for diagnosing is a qualitative test, but if the G6PD enzyme activity level is more than 30% qualitative test cannot pick the respondent as deficient. In our study, we ran qualitative tests on all respondents and only 4/177(2.3%), followed by PCR analysis for Mediterranean mutation of all samples, which showed that 31/177 (17.5%) were G6PD deficient. Further studies need to be conducted in the same manner to know the exact prevalence of G6PD. Detailed studies in other ethnic groups of the country must also be conducted to highlight the actual position of this threat.","PeriodicalId":15254,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biology and Life Science","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85604188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The specimens were collected under aseptic techniques using clean glass slides and forceps which were processed for Potassium hydroxide mount and Calcofluor white staining. The mycological cultures were performed on a Dermatophyte test medium and Sabouraud Dextrose agar with and without antibiotics. The data was recorded and analyzed on SPSS version 21. The frequencies, percentages, means, and ratios were calculated using Descriptive statistics. The association between variables were analyzed by the Chi-square test and kappa index.Results: Potassium hydroxide mount revealed fungal spores and hyphae in 154(74.3%) specimens, while Calcofluor white staining showed fungal elements in 179(86.5%) specimens. Out of 207 specimens, 106(51.2%) were culture positive and 101(48.8%) were declared culture negative. Out of culture-positive specimens, dermatophytes were yielded in 61(57.5%) and non-dermatophytes in 45(42.5%) specimens. Among all culture media, the highest number of dermatophytes was yielded by plain Sabouraud dextrose agar (59; 96.5%), followed by dermatophyte test medium (55; 90%), and Sabouraud dextrose agar with antibiotics (54; 90.1%). On the contrary, the primary isolation of non-dermatophytes on the plain was Sabouraud dextrose agar s 32(71.1%), Sabouraud dextrose agar with antibiotics 31(68.2%), and dermatophyte test medium 13(28.8%).Conclusion: In our study, we found Calcofluor white staining technique as the most sensitive method to detect fungal elements from the given hair specimens. For mycological culture, all tested culture media were equally effective for the retrieval of dermatophytes. However, for non-dermatophytes, plain SDA and SDA with antibiotics were found to be better media for isolation.","PeriodicalId":15254,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biology and Life Science","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82131138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PHA-1 is manifested by hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, metabolic acidosis and may present as salt wasting crisis with elevated levels of renin and aldosterone. PHA-1 is subdivided into two types with varying degree of severity. The earliest sign of both type of PHA-1 is poor weight gain due to dehydration and failure to thrive during infancy.
