Herrera-Torres","doi":"10.22358/jafs/161808/2023","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22358/jafs/161808/2023","url":null,"abstract":". The aim of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of molasses in garlic ( Allium sativum ) foliage silages and its effect on in vitro ruminal fermentation parameters and gases production including methane (CH 4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). To this end, fermentation was carried out in 16 microsilos with the addition of molasses (T1 – garlic foliage 90%, ground maize 10%, molasses 0%; T2 – garlic foliage 85%, ground maize 10%, molasses 5%; T3 – garlic foliage 80%, ground maize 10%, molasses 10%; T4 – garlic foliage 75%, ground maize 10%, molasses 15%; n = 4) for 50 days. Subsequently, fermentation was carried out in microsilos using rumen fluid for nutritional evalua - tion. The inclusion of molasses affected protein, neutral detergent fibre (NDF), non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) and lactic acid contents, and pH ( P < 0.05); protein and NDF decreased 22 and 12%, respectively, with the inclusion of 15% of molasses, and pH was generally reduced after the addition of molasses to the experimental treatments. However, molasses increased the NSC content and in vitro dry matter digestibility. Regarding ruminal fermentation, no changes were recorded in the proportions of volatile fatty acids ( P > 0.05), while the concentration of total volatile fatty acids increased with the addition of molasses ( P < 0.05). Ammonia-N levels decreased with the inclusion of molasses ( P < 0.05), while maximum gas production increased up to 48%. Similarly, methane production increased by 46% at the maximum dose of molasses addition ( P < 0.05), but no changes were recorded in the CH 4 :CO 2 ratio ( P > 0.05). These results suggested that the addition of molasses to garlic foliage silages did not result in significant changes in ruminal fermentation pa - rameters such as volatile fat acid (VFA) levels. Therefore, garlic foliage silage can be applied without additional supplementation to reduce agricultural waste and as a non-conventional alternative in ruminant nutrition.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47170824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multiple factors are involved in the regulation of maternal-foetal tolerance, and nucleotide-binding and oligomerisation domain (NOD)-like receptors (NLRs) were shown to play roles in innate immune signalling pathways. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of early pregnancy on the expression of NLRs in the liver of ewes. Livers from ewes were collected on day 16 of the oestrous cycle, and days 13, 16 and 25 of gestation (n = 6 for each group). Real-time quantitative PCR, Western blot and immunohistochemical analysis were used to analyse mRNA and protein expression of NLRs, including NOD1, NOD2, major histocompatibility complex class II transactivator (CIITA), neuronal apoptosis inhibitor protein (NAIP), NLR family, pyrin domain-containing 1 (NLRP1), NLRP3 and NACHT, LRR and PYD domains-containing protein 7 (NLRP7). The data showed that NOD1, CIITA, NLRP1, NLRP3 and NLRP7 were upregulated in maternal liver on days 13 to 25 of pregnancy, and NOD2 expression was upregulated on days 13 and 16 of pregnancy, but downregulated on day 25 of pregnancy. In addition, NOD2 and NLRP7 proteins were located in the endothelial cells of the proper hepatic arteries and portal veins, and in hepatocytes. NAIP expression was the highest at day 16 of pregnancy. In conclusion, this study reported for the first time that early pregnancy modulated the expression of NLRs, suggesting that NLRs were involved in the regulation of maternal hepatic immune functions during early pregnancy in sheep.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41798809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of the present study was to determine the chemical composition and in vitro ruminal fermentation capacity of potato pulp (PP), potato pulp with peel (PPp) and potato peel (Pp), i.e. potato starch by-products. PP and PPp were applied at 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0% (on a dry matter basis) instead of corn flake and barley grain in dairy cow total mixed ration (TMR). The volumes of in vitro total gas and methane production, and metabolisable energy (ME) values of PP and PPp were higher compared to Pp ( P < 0.001). The in vitro true dry matter digestion (tDMd) and in vitro true organic matter digestion (tOMd) values of PP using at 7.5% and 10% rates in TMR were decreased linearly according to that of control TMR value ( P < 0.05). Therefore, the use of potato starch by-products in ruminant diet can be suggested due to the high and rapid fermentation potential, especially of potato pulp without peel. The study showed that PP could be applied at up to 5% and PPp at a level of up to 10% in dairy cattle TMR (on a DM basis). Further in vitro studies should be carried out using dried potato starch by-products.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44528244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effect of adding tomato waste to the diet of laying hens on their performance, egg quality, and blood parameters. A total of 22 articles were selected from five scientific databases such as Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Directory of Open Access Journals. R software version 4.2.0, with supporting libraries, including lme4 and lsmeans (least-squares means test), was used for modelling and statistical analysis. The results of meta-analysis showed that the addition of tomato waste to laying hen rations significantly increased feed intake ( P < 0.01) and tended to correlate with a quadratic pattern of hen-day egg production ( P < 0.061) and egg mass ( P < 0.075); however, eggshell strength decreased significantly ( P < 0.01). Our findings also demonstrated a significant effect on egg-yolk colour, as assessed by a quadratic pattern ( P < 0.01). The lycopene content in egg yolk increased significantly ( P < 0.05). Tomato waste supplementation had a significant ( P < 0.05) effect on total triglyceride and cholesterol levels in blood serum, which followed a quadratic pattern. This meta-analysis has confirmed that feeding tomato waste to laying hens exerts positive effects on animal performance and egg quality.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41403646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The level of stress is undoubtedly related to the position occupied by an individual in a social group. Research shows that this relationship is complex and can be ambiguous. The study involved 53-week-old 80 Green-legged Partridge hens kept in four independent identical boxes divided by opaque partitions, 20 individuals each. Behaviour was recorded for the following activities: pecking and flight. Behavioural observations began when four flocks were established with combined birds (day 1, 2, 3). Subsequent observations were carried out after the flock structure was established (day 14, 15, 16). Counting was conducted for 8 h/day, 4 h in the morning (6:00–10:00), and 4 h in the afternoon (14:00–18:00). Stress level was assessed using physiological indicators such as steroid hormone levels (serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline), corticosterone level and intestinal microflora composition. Changes in group structure were observed and only a small percentage remained constant in terms of belonging to a dominant, subordinate or neutral group. Significant differences in hormone levels were found between birds belonging to the above groups. The results indicated that the lack of an established position in the group structure was a social stressor for laying hens.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45946778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of supple-menting rumen-protected choline with soluble vitamins (RPCSV) on growth performance, plasma profiles, and carcass characteristics in Hanwoo steers. Forty-five steers were fed 0 (T0), 50 (T50), or 100 g (T100) of RPCSV daily for 6 months. The average daily gain was not affected by RPCSV supplementation. The concentrations of total bilirubin ( P < 0.05), aspartate glutamyltransferase ( P < 0.01), alanine aminotransferase ( P < 0.01), glucose ( P < 0.01), non-esterified fatty acids ( P < 0.05), blood urea nitrogen ( P < 0.01), and triglycerides ( P < 0.01) differed depending on the RPCSV supplementation period in each treatment group. Backfat thickness ( P < 0.05) and yield index ( P < 0.01) were affected by RPCSV supplementation. Thus, the results of this study indicated that plasma profiles related to energy, protein, and lipid metabolism increased due to improved liver function with RPCSV supplementation.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43324716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
