Pituitary-hypothalamic-somatotropic (HPS) axis plays a key regulatory role in the metabolic and physiological processes in mammals. It is considered that inflammatory mediators such as proinflammatory cytokines, whose receptors are widespread at the different levels of the HPS axis, may be responsible for disturbing this axis activity. Our study was carried out to determine the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation on the expression of genes encoding pro-inflammatory cytokines and their receptors in the organs belonging to the HPS axis. In vivo studies were carried out on ewes (n = 36) divided randomly into 3 time-dependent groups (n = 12; each). Each time group was divided into two subgroups: control (saline-treated; n = 6) and intravenously treated with LPS (400 ng/kg; n = 6). Animals were euthanized 1.5 h, 3 h, or 9 h after LPS injection; and the fragments of the dorsomedial hypothalamus and mediobasal hypothalamus, anterior pituitary, and liver were collected. The relative gene expression encoding IL1B, IL1R1, IL1R2, IL6, IL6R, IL6ST, TNF, TNFRSF1A, and TNFRSF1B was determined with real-time PCR. Our experiment showed that LPS-induced inflammation modulates the gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL1B , IL6 , and TNF and their corresponding receptor at the different levels of the HPS axis in sheep at the time-dependent manner. Because these cytokines are known as potent modulators of the secretion of hormones and neurohormones, the paracrine action of these locally synthesized cytokines may disturb the activity of the HPS axis; however, it requires further deep-in research.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139201364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to their antiketogenic and antioxidant effects, chestnut tannins may offer a viable approach to manage the impaired immune and renal functions in transition cows. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with chestnut tannins on haematological, biochemical and antioxidant indices, as well as cortisol levels in prepartum dairy cows. Forty multiparous Holstein cows were divided into two homogeneous groups (n = 20): a control (CON), and an experimental group (CNT) receiving 20 g/day of chestnut tannins for the last 25 ± 2 days of pregnancy. Haematological and biochemical indices, cortisol concentration and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) were measured in blood samples collected 25 (day −25) and 5 days (day −5) before the expected parturition. The addition of chestnut tannins exerted no significant effect on red blood cells indices; however, white blood cell ( P = 0.02), lymphocyte ( P = 0.05) and platelet ( P < 0.01) counts were higher, while the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio ( P = 0.03) was lower on day −5 in the CNT group compared to the CON group. Significantly higher values of T-AOC ( P = 0.03) and significantly lower levels of triglycerides ( P = 0.03) and gamma-glutamyl transferase ( P = 0.02) were also found in CNT compared to CON on day −5. The improved haematological profile in CNT cows was accompanied by lower serum creatinine concentration ( P = 0.04), while total protein, calcium, phosphorus and cortisol did not differ significantly between CNT and CON cows. These data demonstrate that dietary chestnut tannin supplementation in a close-up diet has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and could potentially mitigate immune suppression and kidney dysfunction near parturition. Further research should be conducted concerning the mechanisms underlying these responses","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":"28 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139265266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concentration of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in dairy products derived from ruminants, such as cow’s milk, is mainly influenced by the dietary lipid profile. The current study aimed to establish the relationship between fatty acid (FA) profiles in various diets and the concentration of CLA in bovine milk using a meta-analysis. A total of 63 articles were selected, comprising 35 studies involving oilseeds, 13 – fish oil, and 15 – grass as the sole food source. A general linear model was constructed for each ingredient and CLA concentration was optimised with respect to the FA that showed the greatest effect (C18:0, C18:2 and C18:3) in the model. The relationship between FA concentrations in the diets, presentation method (seeds and pasture), type (seeds), and basal diet (fish oil), and the CLA content in milk was assessed using analysis of covariance, followed by Tukey’s test ( P = 0.05). It has been demonstrated that an increase in the total concentration of C18:0, C18:2, and C18:3 in the diets does not necessarily guarantee a higher CLA level in milk. This phenomenon is attributed to ruminal FA metabolism and metabolic processes within the animal itself. Consequently, it can be concluded that a quadratic relationship exists between the concentration of dietary FAs and the concentration of CLA in milk.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139287434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our previous study showed that micelle silymarin (MS) improved the antioxidant capacity of lactating sows and average daily gain of fattening pigs; however, its effect on weaned piglets has not yet been elucidated. The present work aimed to explore the influence of varying doses of MS on growth performance, blood profiles, nutrient digestibility, and antioxidant capacity of weaned piglets. One hundred and twenty weaned piglets (60 males and 60 females) at the age of 21 days (average body weight = 6.50 kg) were randomly divided into 3 dietary groups. Each treatment consisted of 8 replicate pens (5 pigs/pen). The following feeds were applied: a basal diet (without MS) and a basal diet with the addition of 0.05% MS or 0.1% MS. The feeding trial lasted 42 days. The results demonstrated that dietary MS linearly increased average daily gain over the entire period ( P = 0.011). Average daily feed gain tended to be higher with increasing MS doses in the diet ( P = 0.058). Faecal score and nutrient utilisation in terms of dry matter, nitrogen, and gross energy were not affected by MS doses ( P > 0.05). On day 42, serum immunoglobulin M levels were elevated after the inclusion of both 0.05% and 0.1% MS in the diet ( P = 0.016). Additionally, malondialdehyde levels showed a linear reduction on days 14 and 21 ( P = 0.005), while glutathione levels were increased on day 21 ( P = 0.005). In summary, supplementing the diet of weaning piglets with MS had no adverse effects on their health. Furthermore, including 0.1% MS in the diet of weaned piglets tended to improve growth performance and antioxidant capacity.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135126935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
