Protected sodium butyrate (PSB) is considered an alternative to antibiotics in broiler diets. The present study investigated the effect of PSB supplementation on growth performance, carcass traits, relative weight of internal organs and intestinal morphology in broilers. A total of 1200 one-day-old New Lohman male broilers were randomly allocated to two dietary treatment groups (6 replicates, 100 birds per treatment) and fed a basal diet (CON) or a diet supplemented with 1 g of PSB per kg of diet for 5 weeks of the rearing period. On days 21 and 35, one bird per replicate was randomly selected and slaughtered to determine carcass traits, relative weight of internal organs, and measurements of intestinal histomorphological parameters. The results showed that dietary treatment with PSB increased body weight and average daily gain, but it also led to increased mortality rate ( P < 0.05) on day 35 compared to the control group. Furthermore, PSB supplementation increased liver weight, jejunum length and colon length, while decreasing heart weight ( P < 0.05) on day 21. In the PSB group, there was a decrease in the number of crypts in the jejunum and an increase in the height of the villi in the ileum ( P < 0.05). In conclusion, on day 21, PSB supplementation resulted in an increase in broiler digestive organ parameters, especially liver weight and intestinal morphology. Furthermore, improved growth performance of broilers was recorded on day 35.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48052641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Western diet, which is typically high in saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and low in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), has been identified as a factor contributing to the growing obesity rate. Long-term consumption of high-fat diets (HFDs) has also been associated with increased risk of chronic kidney disease. Therefore, we hypothesized that different fatty acids composition in HFDs would differentially affect renal microstructure and expression pattern of selected genes. The current study evaluated the influence of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) administration on the stimulation of ovarian follicles, oocyte quality, and embryo production rate in Ongole cows with synchronized follicular wave emergence. Follicular waves were synchronized using 10 μg of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), followed by FSH administration (250 μg) in three divided doses of 125, 75, and 50 μg at 48, 60, and 72 h post-GnRH administration, respectively. Although the total number of follicles was similar in both groups, the hormonal stimulation regimen increased ( P < 0.01) the number of large follicles without affecting small and medium follicles. FSH stimulation had no effect on the mean count of aspirated follicles; however, the cows administered FSH showed a higher ( P < 0.001) aspiration rate. An analysis of the proportion of cumulus oocyte complexes revealed that FSH stimulation did not affect their mean number. Nevertheless, FSH-stimulated cows had a lower recovery rate ( P < 0.001) of cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) compared to the control group. In addition, the proportion of good-quality COCs was higher ( P < 0.01), with a simultaneous lower ( P < 0.01) percentage of poor-quality COCs in the FSH group. In vitro fertilization of both good and poor quality COCs revealed a higher ( P < 0.01) blastocyst formation rate within 7 to 8 days of fertilization. The study concluded that the FSH super-stimulation protocol improved follicular number, aspiration rate, oocyte competence and blastocyst percentage in cows synchronized for follicular wave emergence.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43038720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human activities, such as poaching, hunting, grazing of cattle and goats, mining, firewood extraction, and the pet trade, have posed a significant threat to this species for years. Although legislation to protect the species has been in place since 1929, it was not efficiently enforced until the establishment of the Reserva Nacional Las Chinchillas in Auco, Chile in 1983. This species has been included in the CITES Appendix I since 1977. The current wild population is estimated at around 5350 mature individuals, and despite current protection measures, populations continue to decline, and the species is classified as endangered according to the Red List Category & Criteria (Jimenez, 1996; Roach and Kennerley, 2016). Currently, chinchillas are a popular pet and farm animal, but due to ABSTRACT. The purpose of the study was to verify whether increasing the content of tyrosine and phenylalanine in the feed would result in more intense colouration of chinchilla fur and affect the animals’ reactions to behavioural tests. Chinchillas were divided into 3 groups: G-1 fed complete commercial fodder (Tyr 6.91 mg/g, Phe 7.45 mg/g), G-2 fed commercial and experimental fodder (1:1 ratio), and G-3 fed with experimental fodder (Tyr 14.31 mg/g, Phe 21.65 mg/g). During the experiment, the fur colouration type was assessed using two methods: objective, with a colorimeter (CIE L*a*b* colour space: L* – light-dark axis, a* – red-green axis, b* – yellow-blue axis, C* – colour saturation), and subjective, by a qualified chinchilla judge. A behavioural hand test was used to categorise the chinchillas’ responses to human intrusion into their cage. The results from the colorimeter measurements did not show any significant differences in the L* (P > 0.05) component; however, significant differences were observed for the a* (P = 0.0029), b* (P = 0.0218), and C* (P = 0.0342) components in relation to the fur colouration of individual groups. The assessment of the colour type by a qualified specialist found statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) between the initial and final measurements. Spearman’s correlation coefficients between colour type assessment and colour components were mostly low or medium, but with stronger values observed for L* compared to a*, b* or C*. There were no significant effects of the feeding group on the results of the and test. However, a decreasing trend was observed in the hand test results for G-3 from week 5 of the measurements. Royal jelly (RJ) is a bee-derived product widely used as a dietary supplement due to its high potential health benefits. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of feeding RJ on zebrafish fatty acid composition. Zebrafish were fed five distinct diets (D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5) for 56 days supplemented with 0.0, 0.1, 0.4, 1.6, and 6.4% RJ, respectively. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analyses were used to determine FA content in the whole body of zebrafish. The results showed that a feeding regimen that included incrementing RJ doses resulted in statistically significant increases in 16:0, 18:2n-6, and the ratio of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ( P < 0.05). In particular, the content of EPA/DHA increased up to 1.3-fold compared to control group D1. Conversely, increasing RJ levels led to significant decreases in DHA, HUFA, and n-3/n-6 PUFA levels in relation to group D1 ( P < 0.05). In conclusion, considering the EPA/DHA ratio among the analysed fatty acids, the diet with a 1.6% RJ addition was the optimal choice. Therefore, RJ can be recommended as a sustainable alternative lipid source in aquaculture.","PeriodicalId":14919,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45958400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
