The insistent emphasis on the fear that Romans ought to have of Catiline and his fellows helps buttress Cicero's own authority as a consul, a new man, and a saviour of the city.Résumé:Dans les trois premières Catilinaires, Cicéron définit la crise à laquelle l'État romain fait face en termes spécifiques et concrets. Je défends l'idée que sa description des activités de Catilina peut être interprétée comme une « rhétorique de la terreur », un terme utilisé par les spécialistes de la rhétorique pour décrire la façon dont les chefs politiques modernes ont répondu aux violentes crises du XXIe siècle. Cicéron utilise des thèmes semblables pour créer une atmosphère d'urgence en 63 avant notre ère. We use quantitative methods to compare Augustine's level of engagement with Orator against his engagement with other handbooks of classical Latin rhetoric. Our results inform a close reading of the text as body metaphor in DDC 4.13. Augustine incorporates Ciceronian colometry into his presentation of the epistles to demonstrate Paul's eloquence. We argue that Augustine's comparatively heavy use of Cicero is an attempt to justify the use of rhetoric in Christian teaching while adapting that rhetoric to Christian purposes.Résumé:Cet article examine la relation intertextuelle entre le quatrième livre du De doctrina christiana d'Augustin et l'Orator de Cicéron. À l'aide de méthodes quantitatives, nous évaluons le degré d'engagement d'Augustin envers l'Orator en comparaison d'autres manuels de rhétorique latine classique. Les résultats nous invitent à une lecture attentive de la métaphore du texte comme un corps en DDC IV, 13. Augustin introduit la colométrie cicéronienne dans sa présentation des épîtres pour démontrer l'éloquence de Paul. Nous suggérons que l'usage important qu'Augustin fait de Cicéron est une tentative de justifier le recours à la rhétorique dans l'enseignement chrétien et d'adapter cette rhétorique aux besoins des chrétiens.","PeriodicalId":148727,"journal":{"name":"Echos du monde classique: Classical news and views","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117303159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A search for some 7,400 Lucretian clausulae over some 228,000 verses currently in CroALa results in 1,994 cases of at least one match, with 5,529 unique lines of Croatian Latin poetry matching the clausulae. In the small late Roman villa of ca. 370/375 ad identified by earlier work, the largest room, in the west wing, was found to have a floor of opus signinum, but the west corridor, in contrast to the mosaic-paved south corridor, had a floor of beaten earth throughout its life. The villa may never have been completely finished, even though occupation debris suggests it was frequented for much of the fifth century. Of the small freestanding bath-house at a higher level alongside it, only a single heated pool had survived later demolition. In its place two storerooms were inserted deep into the earth for efficient insulation. In the fire that destroyed the villa ca. 450/530 ad, a date supported by C14 analysis, the contents of these stores were carbonized: a huge cache of thousands of seeds, principally barley but also including wheat, grapes, and legumes, was uncovered there. The much larger, earlier store-building to the east, provisionally dated to ca. 325/350 and destroyed ca. 360, is now shown to have been a basilican structure. Three earlier phases of building have been detected below it; there is also a sherd of Attic Black Figure pottery, attesting activity at Gerace ca. 500 bc. A further 37 examples of stamps on roof tiles were discovered, including a single example from a hitherto unrecorded die; they were all part of the production, probably on site, of Philippianus, the likely owner of the Gerace estate in the late fourth century. After the fire of 450/530 ad, early Byzantine structures (seventh century?), much disturbed by the plough, occupied part of the site of the late Roman villa. Résumé: Une deuxième saison de fouilles a été menée en 2015 à Gerace (dans la province d’Enna en Sicile). Dans la petite villa romaine tardive qui a été précédemment identifiée et datée de 370/375 après J. C., la plus grande pièce, située dans l’aile ouest, a révélé un plancher d’opus signinum, alors que le corridor ouest, contrairement au corridor sud pavé en mosaïque, a conservé un plancher de terre battue. La construction de villa pourrait ne jamais avoir été complétée, même si les débris d’occupation suggèrent qu’elle a été en activité durant une grande partie du Ve siècle. Du petit complexe balnéaire autonome jouxtant à un niveau plus élevé, seule une piscine chauffée a survécu à la démolition. À cet endroit, deux entrepôts ont été creusés profondément dans la terre pour une isolation efficace. Lors de l’incendie qui a détruit la villa en 450/530 après J. C. – une date confirmée par l’analyse au carbone 14 –, le contenu de ces entrepôts a été carbonisé : un important dépôt de milliers de graines, principalement de l’orge, mais aussi du blé, des raisins et des légumineuses, y a été découvert. Le magasin plus large et plus ancien à l’est, daté provisoirement de 325/350 avant J. C. et détruit vers 360, s’est finalement révélé être une structure de type basiliqu","PeriodicalId":148727,"journal":{"name":"Echos du monde classique: Classical news and views","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114324339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The excavations have been directed by the Vindolanda Trust, in conjunction with a team from the University of Western Ontario. Based on these first seasons, some significant preliminary conclusions about this area of the site can be made, which will be important in moving forward with further excavations and for future interpretations of the early occupation of this region by the Roman army. The North Field appears to have been occupied already in the last quarter of the first century and may prove with further excavation to contain a fort that pre-dates “Period I” at Vindolanda, settled in ad 85. The field also appears to have been an area of significant activity in the second and third centuries. Large stone structures and a fortified ditch enclosed at least part of the space in this period. These buildings were part of the thriving third-century extramural settlement explored extensively elsewhere at Vindolanda over the past decades. The findings from these five seasons (2009–2010 and 2012–2014) have led to further excavation campaigns in the North Field, which will continue for several more field seasons. This article disseminates the results of the exploratory trenches as the research moves forward with further excavation. Résumé: Depuis 2009, des travaux ont été menés dans la zone nord de Vindolanda, un fort militaire situé à la frontière de la Bretagne romaine. Les fouilles ont été dirigées par le Vindolanda Trust, en collaboration avec une équipe de l’University of Western Ontario. À la suite de ces premières saisons, quelques conclusions préliminaires significatives peuvent être avancées à propos de cette partie du site, qui seront décisives pour la poursuite des fouilles et pour l’interprétation des débuts de l’occupation de cette région par l’armée romaine. La zone nord semble avoir été déjà occupée dans le dernier quart du premier siècle et des fouilles subséquentes pourraient même révéler un fort antérieur à la « période I » de Vindolanda, fondé en 85 avant. J. C. Ce territoire semble aussi avoir connu une importante activité durant les IIe et IIIe siècles. De larges structures en pierre et une fossé fortifié occupent au moins une partie de l’espace durant cette période. Ces constructions se rattachent aux florissantes installations extramurales fouillées intensivement ailleurs à Vindolanda durant les dernières décennies. Les découvertes de ces cinq saisons (2009–2010 et 2012–2014) ont initié d’autres campagnes de fouilles dans la zone nord, qui devraient s’étaler encore sur plusieurs saisons. Cet article expose les résultats des tranchées exploratoires, alors que la recherche se poursuit avec d’autres fouilles.","PeriodicalId":148727,"journal":{"name":"Echos du monde classique: Classical news and views","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130141997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I argue, based on a scrupulous reading of Pausanias’ detailed recreation of the painting, that Polygnotos painted two different types of body armour in his painting. One is the bronze bell cuirass, an old-fashioned panoply item in his day, and the second is the contemporary composite corselet. The visual juxtaposition of the anachronistic and the contemporary panoply items is intentional. It enabled Polygnotos to add complexity to his painting and to compel the viewer to historical awareness. Similar visual juxtaposition occurs also in vase paintings, proving that this visual practice is not an isolated, idiosyncratic creation, but rather a visual manifestation of the way the Greeks perceived and presented their past.Résumé:Cet article s’intéresse aux images des cuirasses dans la peinture perdue de Polygnote, l’Ilioupersis. Je soutiens, d’après une lecture attentive de la reconstitution détaillée de la peinture par Pausanias, que Polygnote a représenté deux différents types d’armure sur sa peinture: d’une part, la cuirasse de bronze, qui était une pièce d’armure démodée à son époque, et, d’autre part, le corselet composite de son temps. La juxtaposition visuelle de pièces d’armure anachroniques et contemporaines est intentionnelle. Elle permet à Polygnote d’ajouter de la complexité à sa peinture et de stimuler la conscience historique du spectateur. It begins by presenting the five points to which they have reduced Aristotle’s position, and then proceeds to consider each point and determine to what extent it accurately reflects the views Aristotle outlines in the Poetics, Rhetoric, and other texts. Its basic contention is that out of the five points they attribute to Aristotle, only one has firm textual support: this is the notion that metaphors involve a statement of similarity.Résumé:Cet article remet en question une conception populaire des idées d’Aristote sur les métaphores, conception qui a gagné en popularité dans les récentes publications de plusieurs sommités œuvrant dans le domaine de la linguistique cognitive. Après avoir présenté les cinq points qui, selon eux, résument la position d’Aristote, ces chercheurs entreprennent de considérer chaque point pour déterminer dans quelle mesure celui-ci reflète adéquatement les idées exprimées par Aristote dans la Poétique, la Rhétorique et d’autres textes. Pour réfuter cette conception, il suffit de faire valoir que, des cinq points attribués à Aristote, un seul a un fondement textuel solide, c’està-dire l’idée que les métaphores impliquent une notion de similarité.","PeriodicalId":148727,"journal":{"name":"Echos du monde classique: Classical news and views","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121687688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
