Arithmetica Horvatszka (1758), written by Mihajlo Šilobold, and Aritmetika u slavni jezik Ilirski (1766) by Mate Zoričić were published in separate parts of Croatia; the former was published in the part of Croatia that was under Austro-Hungarian rule and the latter under the Venetian rule. Although they were not directly intended for school work, the authors wanted to teach the general population the basics of numbers and arithmetic through these books. The global problem of waste management is closely related to this topic. A constant increase in waste, which can be linked with mass consumption and economic development, is recorded in Croatia as well. Being observed as a global problem of the entire society, waste disposal can be also look at from an individual's viewpoint who is responsible, after becoming ecologically aware, for reshaping its own behaviour and lifestyle in accordance with ecological values. The subject of the research is the ecological awareness of young people with the general aim of examining young people’s attitudes towards environment and youth awareness of environmental protection, and in order to determine this, it was necessary to determine the lifestyle habits, the frequency of recycling, the ways they contribute to environmental protection, their attitudes about the importance of environmental care and the impact of residents on the environment. Furthermore, an assessment of the citizens level of education on environmental protection was carried out. The online questionnaire included a convenience sample of 480 young people, 154 men and 326 women, in the city of Split, within the range of 18 to 29 years. From the results it is evident that, according to their assessment, the participants are conscientious toward the environment, often recycle paper and plastic, sometimes use eco products and dispose of waste in designated places. They criticize the (lack of) education of other citizens of Split when it comes to ecology, and they are also aware that waste disposal in Split is insufficient. When it comes to attitudes about waste disposal, air pollution and the education of other citizens, young people show that they are aware of the problems in the city Split. The ecological situation significantly affects the quality of life of an individual and society, so the results of this research can be understood within the framework of the set goals and results obtained from the conducted research. We can understand the research results as a guideline for work in the field of environmental awareness and environmental protection. {"title":"Representations of culture, race and gender in English language textbooks","authors":"Adriana Petra Blažević, Marijana Blažević","doi":"10.38003/sv.72.1.3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.38003/sv.72.1.3","url":null,"abstract":"In order to investigate and understand the relations between different social groups participating in copious Anglophone settings, this paper sets out to present and discuss the findings of a quantitative analysis of culture, race and gender in nine English language textbooks for first-year secondary school students in Croatia. The first section of the paper offers a theoretical background of the three previously mentioned social phenomena in the light of the importance of English in modern education, frequently associated with various systems of social inequality. What follows are the results of the content analysis of sampled English language textbooks. The results of the study indicated significant differences regarding the representation of specific social groups as well as the intersections between gender and employment status. Thus, an inherent partisanship towards specific social groups was revealed, indicating a subliminal reproduction of social power through education. S tom tematikom je usko povezan globalni problem gospodarenja otpadom. U Hrvatskoj se također bilježi stalan rast otpada što se može povezati s povećanom potrošnjom te gospodarskim razvojem. Iako se na problem otpada gleda kao na globalni problem, odnosno kao na problem čitavog društva, zbrinjavanje otpada može se sagledati i iz ugla pojedinca na kojem je da osvijesti spomenutu problematiku te usmjeri vlastito ponašanje i način života sukladno ekološkim vrijednostima. Predmet ovog istraživanja je ekološka osviještenost mladih te je cilj ispitati odnos mladih prema okolišu kao i svijest o zaštiti okoliša, a kako bi to utvrdili, potrebno je bilo ispitati životne navike mladih, učestalost recikliranja, načine kojima mladi pridonose zaštiti okoliša, stavove mladih o važnosti brige o okolišu te stavove o utjecaju stanovnika na okoliš kao i procjenu educiranosti građana grada Splita o zaštiti okoliša. Online anketnim upitnikom obuhvaćen je prigodni uzorak od 480 mladih, 154 muškaraca i 326 žena, na području grada Splita u dobi od 18 do 29 godina. Iz rezultata je vidljivo kako su sudionici/ce, prema svojoj procjeni, savjesni prema okolišu, učestalo recikliraju papir i plastiku, ponekad koriste ekoproizvode te otpad odlažu na predviđena mjesta za to. Kritiziraju (ne)educiranost ostalih građana grada Splita kada je riječ o ekologiji, ali imaju i stav prema broju mjesta za odlaganje otpada u Splitu kojih, prema njima, nema dovoljno. Kada je riječ o stavovima o odlaganju otpada, zagađenosti zraka te educiranosti građana, mladi pokazuju kako su svjesni problematike. Ekološka situacija znatno utječe na kvalitetu života pojedinca i društva, stoga rezultate ovog istraživanja možemo razumjeti u okviru postavljenih ciljeva i rezultata dobivenih provedenim istraživanjem. Upravo rezultate istraživanja možemo shvatiti kao smjernice za rad na području okolišne svijesti i zaštite okoliša. Za razvoj i unaprjeđenje sveučilišne nastave važno je osuvremenjivanje nastavnog procesa koje ne podrazumijeva samo osuvremenjivanje kurikula, nego cjelokupnoga didaktičkometodičkog organiziranja nastavnoga rada. Pritom je potrebno naglasiti zadovoljstvo i potrebe studenata, kompetencije visokoškolskih nastavnika i očekivanja radnog tržišta. Cilj ovoga rada bio je ustvrditi koja je sastavnica didaktičkometodičkog organiziranja sveučilišne nastave najvažniji čimbenik izvrsnosti nastavnog rada te kako sveučilišni nastavnici Univerziteta u Tuzli vrjednuju vlastitu izvrsnost didaktičkometodičkog organiziranja nastavnog rada. Koristilo se analitičkodeskriptivnim upitnikom kao inačicom analitičkodeskriptivne metode, postupcima analize sadržaja i anketiranjem. Pretpostavljeno je kako postoji statistički značajna razlika u samovrjednovanju važnosti čimbenika izvrsnosti didaktičkometodičke organizacije nastavnog rada visokoškolskih nastavnika Univerziteta u Tuzli te da se samovrjednovanja važnosti pojedinih čimbenika izvrsnosti sveučilišne nastave razlikuju s obzirom na dob, spol, znanstvenonastavno/umjetničko zvanje, godine radnog iskustva u visokoškolskim ustanovama te znanstveno područje kojemu Fakultet pripada. A plethora of studies has shown the importance of these skills to future academic achievements and professional career. The goal of this study was to determine the correlation of reading and mathematics in third-grade elementary school students in Canton Sarajevo. An additional goal was to determine if there are differences in the proportion of academic underachievement in relation to the student’s gender. The sample for this study consisted of 70 third-grade students (33 girls, 37 boys, mean age- 103,1 months, SD- 5,6 months) attending two elementary schools in Canton Sarajevo. Results of this study indicated that reading and mathematics share 25% of the variance in the scores. The cor[1]relation between reading and mathematics was r = 0,50, p<0,01. There were more boys in the category of academic underachievement in both, reading and mathematics. However, statistically significant differences in the distribution of students were present only for reading and not for mathematics. Identification of cognitive factors that contribute to reading attainment and mathematical skills will help teachers create better intervention programs. The article ends with some recommendations for teachers on how to improve these academic skills in their students><0,01. The research was conducted on a sample of 186 students of one primary school in Našice aged 11 to 15 years. The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between experienced and committed peer violence at school with students’ assessment of school climate and to determine whether there are statistically significant differences in experiencing and committing peer violence with regard to gender, age and academic achievement. A statistically significant difference was found according to gender and academic achievement in the frequency of victimization and peer violence in the past seven days. A significant, weak connection between the frequency of experienced and committed peer violence at school and the perception of a negative school climate was also established. The research was conducted in two international schools in Belgrade, using the play titled ‘Musical Monkeys’ and in collaboration with the Music-Math team from Mexico who are the creators of the mentioned game. The results have shown that this kind of approach in working with children encourages activity and engagement, self-confidence, empathy, team work, integrity, tolerance and enthusiasm, while requiring and encouraging collaboration and constructive communication, cooperation and respect among students in the process of solving a set of mathematical and/ or musical tasks. {"title":"Hope for the future?","authors":"Tomislav Cerinski","doi":"10.38003/sv.69.1.10","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.38003/sv.69.1.10","url":null,"abstract":"Near the end of the winter semester of the school year 2018/2019 the attitudes of students of graduate studies at Faculty of Science (PMF), educational studies at Faculty of Science, Department of Physics (PMF-F) and Faculty of Education (UF), Čakovec Department (N=151) were analysed, regarding the core values of the National Curriculum Framework (NOK) and education system. „The questionnaire of attitudes towards values as fundamental components of the National Curriculum Framework“ and „Questionnaire of students’ attitudes towards education system“. The aim of the study was to determine if there were any differences among students of UF and PMF-F regarding their attitudes towards the core values of NOK and regarding attitudes towards education system. A significant difference in attitudes was established, regarding identity, solidarity, responsability and pupil teacher partnership (students of UF and female students in general appreciate these values more) whereas there were no differences regarding acquired knowledge, teaching process and atmosphere. More than 90% of students of UF expressed their wish to pursue a career in school education, while less than 50% of students of PMF-F agreed with them. Učitelji se za slušanje glazbe nerijetko koriste CD-ima i DVD-ima unatoč naglome razvoju tehnologije.Današnji su učenici digitalno pismeni, rođeni u potpuno digitaliziranome svijetu te učiteljima predstavljaju izazov u nastavi. Učenici i sustav očekuju širok raspon raznih digitalnih sadržaja – audiozapise, videozapise, animacije, fotografije i slično. Srećom, učitelj može odabrati digitalne alate kojima će se koristiti za unapređenje nastavnoga područja – slušanja glazbe. U okviru rada provedeno je istraživanje čiji je cilj utvrditi način kojim učitelji provode aktivnost slušanja glazbe te utjecaj uporabe digitalnih alata na svladavanje gradiva i motivaciju kod učenika. U istraživanju su sudjelovale četiri škole, 675 učenika općeobrazovnih škola od petoga do osmog razreda i njihovi učitelji Glazbene kulture iz Osječko-baranjske i Vukovarsko-srijemske županije. Istraživanje je eksperimentalno i podijeljeno je u dvije faze – prije i poslije uporabe digitalnih alata. Dobiveni rezultati istraživanja prikazuju kako je primjenom digitalnoga alata Kahoot! olakšano usvajanje gradiva te su učenici motiviraniji tijekom slušanja glazbe.
