The present study was undertaken to set up a standard formulae to estimate stature from hand length and foot length in medical students of Nagpur region of Maharashtra state. Method: Four hundred healthy and normal adult medical students comprising of 200 males and 200 females in 18-25 years age group were included in the study. The hand length and foot length were measured independently on left and right side of each individual using a Sliding caliper and spreading calipers respectively. Stature of individuals was measured with the help of a Stadiometer. Results: The paired sample t test showed that the statistical difference between males and females on both sides was highly significant for all the measurements (p < 0.0001). The correlation between stature and various parameters studied in both the sexes were found to be positive and statistically highly significant (p < 0.0001). The correlation coefficient of foot length in both males and females together depicts higher correlation with stature than hand length with highest correlation coefficient 0.87. The correlation between stature and hand length as well as stature and foot length was higher in females than males. Linear and multiple regression equations for stature estimation were calculated separately for males and females as well as for both sexes together. Conclusion: The significant positive correlations between the explanatory variables and stature indicate that these variables can be successfully used to predict stature.","PeriodicalId":13848,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Biomedical and Advance Research","volume":"67 1","pages":"382-387"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81127001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Incontinentia pigmenti is a rare X-linked dominant disorder, lethal in the majority of affected males in utero and variably expressed in females. Herein we present a case of a cutaneously asymptomatic lady with bad obstetric history who was detected to have APLA syndrome during Antenatal Care, with a dermatological referral to the dermatologist of her offspring leading to detection of Incontinentia pigmenti in the otherwise healthy offspring. We present this case to highlight the diagnostic difficulties in the coexistence of these two conditions in the same patient, particularly when the autosomal dominant gene is not expressed in females.","PeriodicalId":13848,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Biomedical and Advance Research","volume":"59 1","pages":"393-396"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88665927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It results in aesthetic disfigurement of face and functional impairments like feeding, speech and oral hygiene and difficulty of intubation. Objective: This study aims to share the experience of treatment of microstomia with various methods. Methods: This study comprised of 7 cases of microstomia of variable severity over a period of 10 years. Case number 1, 2 and 3, having severe microstomia, were treated with Converse method of commissuroplasty without waiting for scar maturation. Case number 4 and 5 had moderate severity microstomia, in these patients the correction of the neck contracture was considered as priority and were treated with release of neck contracture and split skin grafting. Case number 6 and 7 had pressing priority of treatment of ectropion which was treated first but unfortunately further the treatment of microstomia was given back seat by the patients. Results: Case number 1 to 5 treated operatively showed significant improvement in mouth opening while case number 6 and 7 who rejected treatment, showed no improvement.Conclusion: Post burn microstomia is infrequent yet important functional condition causing difficulty for feeding and for intubation during anesthesia and hence its correction falls under essential procedure to be done earliest without waiting for scar maturation. Cases which were treated operatively showed significant improvement in mouth opening. In cases that rejected treatment, hence considered as conservatively treated, the results were inferior.","PeriodicalId":13848,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Biomedical and Advance Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"345-350"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91256117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The leading etiological factor behind this is consumption of tobacco by Indian population. Palliative care is an imperative need worldwide for people with cancer. It is a multidisciplinary approach consisting of specialists in various fields of medicine; but the role of oral physician in palliative team is oblivious. Oral care is considered one of the most basic of nursing activities but it may be compromised in cancer patients either as a result of the disease itself or due to the various therapeutic modalities. The course of palliative care should be broadened by providing education to clinicians, patients, and families with regard to the elements and appropriateness of palliative care.","PeriodicalId":13848,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Biomedical and Advance Research","volume":"7 1","pages":"341-344"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73092625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A case control hospital based multi-group study was designed. Total of 150 Study Subjects fit on inclusion criteria were included and comprises in three groups; G 1) Acute exacerbation of COPD (N=50); G 2) Healthy Controls (N=50); G 3) Known cases of COPD presenting to the OPD for follow up (N=50) to study the disturbance in serum ionic magnesium in patients of COPD with acute exacerbation. Data was analysed by using standard statistical software SPSS version 23. Chi Square, student t test and Pearson correlation and regression test were used as a tests of significance. p value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Severe statistically significant diminution of serum ionic Mg 2+ level was found in patients presented with an acute exacerbation of COPD (mean serum Mg 2+ =0.317mmol/l; SD0.06) compared to healthy (mean serum Mg 2+ =0.510mml/l; SD0.042) as well as stable COPD subjects (mean serum Mg 2+ =0.400 mmol/l; SD0.074; p=0.000). While mean serum ionic magnesium in type 2 Respiratory failure subjects was less than Non type 2 Respiratory failure (p=0.435). Serum ionic magnesium changes among subjects of COPD with acute exacerbation, was weakly associated with change in pH of blood (r = .057, p=0.697). Conclusions: Diminution of serum ionic magnesium (iMg 2+ ) concentration was significantly associated with acute exacerbation of COPD, as well as enhances the frequency of hospital admission.","PeriodicalId":13848,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Biomedical and Advance Research","volume":"220 1","pages":"359-365"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82463131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
