In particular, Chanlatte's whereabouts in the crucial decade between the English invasion of 1793 and the defeat of the Leclerc expedition in 1803 have been the object of much speculation. Much of what has generally been taken for granted about Chanlatte's life comes from posthumous, seldom sourced, and often hostile accounts. This article offers the most complete biography of Chanlatte to date, supported by evidence drawn from French colonial records and other archival sources.","PeriodicalId":137704,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Haitian Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116251550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, offering close readings of several articles from Le Nouvelliste and AlterPresse written in the days following Duvalier's death, I discern two different approaches that emerge in relation to memorializing either Duvalier or his victims: on one hand, the duty to remember; on the other, the necessity of forgetting. Turning my attention to Agnant's and Laferrière's works that deal most closely with the dictatorships, I argue that their approaches mirror those of the media. While they both articulate an awareness of the psychological dangers encountered by those who carry either too much or too little memory, Laferrière's narrators find personal freedom in the present by choosing to put the past behind them, whereas Agnant's protagonists believe that only in uncovering the past can a future for themselves or their nation be imagined. The two authors thus approach the history and future of Haiti from very different perspectives.","PeriodicalId":137704,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Haitian Studies","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116486299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Grand marronnage, long-term or permanent escape from enslavement, was part of the pre-revolution repertoire of contention. This paper uses content analysis of digitally archived runaway advertisements to examine relationships between birth origin and interactional patterns that facilitated long-term escape and reflected shared responses to repression and other environmental factors over time. Marronnage by a group of two or more people was a significant portion of the sample, demonstrating the importance of small-scale group interactions while escaping rather than attempting the dangerous act of fleeing alone. Africa-born and creole African-descendant runaways responded to repression using group escape and other types of social network ties in distinctive ways. There was a closely associated relationship between the use of social network ties and durations of escape that were relatively successful, which I define as lasting for six months or more. Moreover, rates of successful marronnage gradually increased in the years before the Haitian Revolution, which perhaps helped to facilitate the diffusion of a growing shared consciousness. These findings indicate a need for further research on micro-level activity prior to world-historical events such as the Haitian Revolution.","PeriodicalId":137704,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Haitian Studies","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123914291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through her letters and the lens of an outsider, Sansay highlights Saint-Domingue's strategic place in the Americas as a site of global slavery. The letters shed light on French society's obsession with the theatrics of performance. That society was so preoccupied by a life of debauchery that it ignored the fact that the colony was literally falling apart. The theatrics that Sansay describes parallel Michel-Rolph Trouillot's theory of how power and silence operate. Since it was unthinkable for the French to comprehend, let alone accept, that slaves could have the desire for freedom and fight to obtain that freedom, it made sense for them to ignore the signs of revolt. Sansay also found it unthinkable that the French could not control their colony of former slaves.","PeriodicalId":137704,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Haitian Studies","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128413779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through a culturally relevant Creole mother-tongue pedagogy coupled with cultural awareness learning model, primary school children are encouraged to develop their Haitian identity. A qualitative research was conducted with diverse participants from LKM and other two other schools—first graders, sixth graders, and their educators—to understand the model. Through observations, interviews, a focus group, and prolonged stay in the field, this research aimed to offer a comparative and explanatory view on the impact of this combined learning model on identity.","PeriodicalId":137704,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Haitian Studies","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133228517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
