In her works of the 1990s on the sociology of everyday life and socio-historical anthropology, a unique methodology was developed for the investigation of the human dimension of “modernization from above” that was provided within the politics of building a socialist society in the USSR. Her research program was focused on the theoretical reconstruction of social practices and modes of existence of the «ordinary Soviet man», understood as an “anthropological consequence” of the attempt of the realization of the communist project in Russia. However, her intention for the “disclosure of traces of little man in big history,” as it was expressed by the researcher herself, has nothing to do with the ideology-laden discourse of “totalitarianism.” N. N. Kozlova was not so interested in the forms of controlling the society as the lacunas in it, or in the techniques of totalitarian supremacy as in the practices of non-political resistance from below, or even in the totality as much as the discreteness of social matter of the new mass society. The “wrong” Soviet modern dropping out from the normative representations of Modernity was the main epistemological interest in her works, which is innovative from both the substantial and methodological standpoints. The investigative vision developed in Kozlova’s works retains its heuristic significance even today when Russia is experiencing a “Soviet Renaissance.” Moreover, her approaches to the study of the society of the “new type” allows for the anthropological understanding of the current state of our country. The paper reconstructs Kozlova’s research program regarding Soviet sociality as an object of social philosophy and social anthropology. The main focus will be the theoretical approaches to the analysis of the daily practices which allowed her to develop her unique methodology.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125360434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the enormous interest in this particular dictum overshadowed many of the even more intriguing observations discovered and diagnoses made by the Prussian general. The present text aims to investigate one of the less-famous pronouncements made in von Clausewitz’s On War. This pronouncement regards the ‘law’ of the ‘escalation to extremes’ that is inherent to every war (a war becomes the war, becomes all or total war). This ‘law’ has received little interest, although it can be considered much more worrisome than von Clausewitz’s more famous dictum. However, it has been recently rediscovered and discussed by the late French philosopher Rene Girard, and, as will be argued in this text, can be considered as the spectral heritage of the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s political philosophy. Although Agamben seldomly mentions the Prussian general (his main influences, Debord, Arendt, and Schmitt, however, often do), the discovery of the spectral kinship between Agamben and von Clausewitz allows us to consider Agamben’s philosophy of the state of exception and total/global civil war from a new and more provocative angle.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125637215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These subcategories are regarded as to be bolstered by increasing international migration and human mobility generated by globalization. The paper regards them in terms of their gender effect, and casts light on the following processes; feminization of international migration caused by the growing share of independently traveling women; globalization of care, incited by the new gendered division of reproductive labour and the growth of world cities requiring a labour market of low-skilled jobs recruited mainly from the third world “new poor”; globalization of waged domestic care work brought about by “care deficit” in households of the Global North and a respective demand in waged care labour of women, performed mainly by migrant workers; globalization of motherhood, resulting from the feminization of poverty and the concurrent feminization of international migration; globalization of personal life, intimacy, and love stemming from the effect of increasing human mobility on family bonds and kinship relationship; globalization of desire as a “Pandora box” of the post-industrial era insofar as it is incited by the “affluence syndrome”, and is pinned on the “chase for lures”; globalization of childhood, covering such processes as international adoption of orphans, child-sex, labor trafficking and domestic slavery, child-soldiers, refugees or asylum claimants, and globalization of risk, generated by the “world war on terror”, and global uncertainty of “high modernity”.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127895003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rapid social changes led to the problematization of personal certainty; in the attempt to define their own identity, people turn to the most obvious classifications, such as territorial ones. This search for personal certainty actualizes the problems of urban identity. The peculiarity of the city as a social entity is the absence of unambiguous patterns for identification within the urban community. The contemporary “information society” only enhances the existing diversity of urban residents and communities. Therefore, instead of the traditional interpretation of urban identification, it is proposed to consider urban identity in the logic of the concept of the “imagined community”. The bases of urban identity are the ideas about the city itself, not about the community. In the search for a theoretical apparatus to describe the contents of these ideas, the author refers to the concept of cultural form as used by L. Ionin in his concept of “cultural staging”. The “classic” sociological model argues that cultural patterns are formed from objective social interests that becomes the bases for corresponding behavior. In a society undergoing a profound transformation where the usual identification model had lost its meaning and the “interest” is reduced to the necessity of survival, such a model is unlikely to work. The concept of cultural staging offers an explanation for the formation of cultural identities as the deployment of the patterns which had been latent for some time, but not currently embodied in social practice.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"2006 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125838002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal of the article is to find a new approach to the mod-ern development of the public sphere by rethinking it from an Arendtian perspective. The first part examines the main actual changes taking place in the public sphere under the influence of social media, and concludes that the classical concept of the public sphere, dating back to its early notion of Jurgen Habermas, needs to be rethought, this requiring a new approach which would take into account the actual changes and new circumstances in the development of the public sphere. It is proposed to use Arendt’s understanding of the public sphere as one of the sources of this new approach which remains relevant today in many ways. The second part examines Arendt’s notion of the public sphere as compared with the concept of the public sphere of early Habermasian writing. As a result of this consideration, it is concluded that, in a number of points, Arendt’s notion of the public sphere is better suited to an understanding of the modern public sphere than the classical Habermasian concept. In the third part, I rethink the existing trends in the development of the digital public sphere from Arendt’s standpoint.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126787551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The multi-scalar approach allows the consideration of how the supra-local and supranational processes crystallize in complex urban systems, and their connections with other systems. The article addresses the question of the dynamics of the global, the national, and the local scales in the implementation and perception of the mega-event. Since the existing studies of the World Cup in Russia tend, as a rule, to focus on isolated topics and the national scale of the event’s preparation, the article expands the focus of existing research. It demonstrates “the game of scales” in the citizens’ perceptions of the World Cup. They, on the one hand, consider this mega-event as a part of the national strategy of development, including seeking investment, while on the other, they are aware that it is the transnational players (FIFA) and the federal and regional governments that predominantly benefit from the event. The authors argue that the respondents’ judgements, on the one hand, are strongly informed by nationalist and geopolitical propaganda, while on the other hand, stem from the respondents’ understanding of the global influences and the significance of economic logic, including the importance of the branding of the nations and cities. The citizens see both the political strategy devised to “force to show respect” and the economic driver of the national and urban growth in the mega-events. They, at the same time, are aware that it is the citizens who will be paying for the sporting festival with their taxes. The mega-events are ambiguous undertakings: while potentially open and bringing joy to everyone, they facilitate a social and geographic inequality.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126585432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the European Mirrors of the Princes, the work of Thomas Aquinas, On Kingship; or, On the Government of Princes, has a special place. Thanks to its author’s reputation, this text became one of the most famous influences in both European Late Medieval Philosophy and Modern Political Philosophy. Additionally, this treatise has become a model for two famous works of the same name, On the Government of Princes, written by Ptolemy of Lucca, and Egidio Colonna. In the discussion of the dating of Aquinas’ book, the author holds the opinion that this work was composed between 1271 and 1273, and was addressed to Hugh III Lusignan, the king of Cyprus. The special place in this article is occupied by a small terminological discussion of the Russian translation of the Latin word “princeps.” The author affirms that the existing translation of this word as “Lord” (gosudar) is impossible and quite incorrect. In the author's opinion, the correct translation is “the ruler,” or “the Prince.”","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121487747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
