Event-analysis is a form of content-analysis and allows for the reconstruction of the dynamics of contention and its key characteristics on the basis of different text sources (police and media reports, participatory observations, etc.). The inception of protest event-analysis is closely linked to the development of the comparative method in the social sciences and to the competition between the theories of collective action and social movements. The demand for wide cross-national comparisons and the quantification of social-political phenomena in addition to the pioneering works of Charles Tilly created the preconditions for a systematic collection of information on protest events. Four generations of event analysis led to the formulation of key concepts of collective action theory (“political opportunity structure”, “cycle of protest”, “repertoire of contention”, etc.), and also improved the techniques and procedures of data collection process, for example, by introducing the triangulation of sources using semi-automated coding. We also analyze the sources of systematic bias in data collection process (selective, descriptive, and research) and the possible means of correction. In addition, we compare the event catalogs of Russian protests and point to specifics of this case, namely, spatial heterogeneity, poor quality of media reports in absence of alternative sources, and the bias in media coverage towards big cities. Using the experience of the “Contention Politics in Russia” database development, we propose systematic methods and means which address the challenges of protest event-analysis in regards to Russia.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122812349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The brief chronicle of her academic career and the list of Zaslavasky's major scientific works are supplemented with some existential reconstructions of the major events in her life, of which Zaslavskaya also paid great attention to in her autobiographical memories. A brief chronicle of her scientific career includes her studies at the Moscow State University, her work at the Institute of Economics, the Russian Academy of Science, and the Novosibirsk Academgorodok, her active part in Perestroika as the first head of the All-Union Center for Public Opinion Research, and finally, her work as the president of the Interdisciplinary Center for Social and Economic Sciences (Intertcentre) near the end of her life. Zaslavsky always stressed the importance of her senior teachers, G.G. Kotov, A.V. Sanina, V.G. Venzher, and I.A. Kronrod, with love and respect. Much of the attention in her autobiographical reflections is occupied in the studies of the interactions between the villages and towns of Russia and the USSR. Zaslavasky also considered ideological socio-political conflicts which provoked the Soviet party leadership around several scientific projects Zaslavskaya was involved in. The obituary emphasizes that Zaslavskaya was characterized as a scientist motivated by social activism and by her desire to contribute to the improvement of the research of Soviet and Russian society. Additionally, Zaslavskaya possessed modesty, humility, curiosity and naivety, the inherent qualities of a true scientist worthy as one of the classic examples of academic intelligence in the world.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121267323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It appears that Weber's theory of domination causes an implicit tension, which calls the canonization of Weber as a “classic” of institutionalized sociology into question. The cultural-anthropological “reconstruction” of Weber’s heritage is characterized by meta-theorizing on the basis of conceptual universalia, which fundamentally contradicts the main provisions of Weber’s understanding (interpretative) sociology in both the substantive and methodological aspects. The “paradigm” of the neoliberal utopia split into two camps: the former ignores Weber’s understanding of sociology as a scientific discipline, while the latter, is characterized by attempts to “distill” his legacy for the needs of the so-called new economic sociology.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"311 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133750328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new effort, known as the “debate about cultural and creative industries”, was undertaken in a new historical context at the beginning of this century. This article tries to clarify the main arguments and positions in these recent debates, and to analyze the attempt of a new operationalization of culture by means of economic discourse in the critical perspective. This attempt was carried out under the new academic slogan of “creative industries”, with which politicians, international and national functionaries, as well as representatives of the academic community pinned their hopes on the invention of a new model of economic growth. One of the principal theses of the article is that this kind of operationalization is not realistic because “creativity”, like “culture”, is not amenable to any mathematization, commodification, or unambiguous interpretation. The policy of “creative industries” is considered through a tendency to a total commercialization of cultural production and its global standardization. The article analyzes different national models of its implementation, as well as the results. One of the most important outcomes of this policy is a growing distrust of the “archaic” forms of cultural knowledge that have been formed in and by national states: the statistical approach as well as its instruments are inappropriate and inadequate as state-of-the-art when the corporate sector almost completely defines rules and standards of a cultural production. This raises the question of whether the state needs a holistic view of culture and the exercising of control functions in this sector of production. In this perspective, the article raises the problem of whether the policy of creative industries is adequate and appropriate for the Russian Federation.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133062906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inspired by literary studies (e.g. Jacques Derrida’s grammatology) he uses contemporary ethnographic works to question ethnography’s claims of scientific objectivity and a clear distinction between allegorical and factual. If ethnography aims to keep its contemporary relevance, it should specifically focus on allegory as an intrinsic quality of ethnographic texts This kind of analysis may assume that any ethnographic text accounts for facts and events but at the same time it tackles the moral, ideological or even cosmological issues. According to Clifford, ethnography has been dominated by a “pastoral” allegorical register which allowed an ethnographer to occupy a privileged position to interpret other, non-writing cultures. Clifford notices that this register is loosing support in the modern world since the difference between illiterate and literate cultures is not relevant anymore. Ethnographic pastoral is now replaced with self-reflexive and dialogical forms of ethnographic writing, analyzed by Clifford by the example of Marjorie Shostak’s book Nisa: The Life and Words of a !Kung Woman.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"335 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115024574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Проводится граница между традиционным представлением о визуальной социологии и интеракционистским взглядом на применение технологий видеозаписи в социологическом исследовании. Описаны история развития видеоанализа и области, где применяется данная методология. В статье обсуждаются характерные черты видео как исследовательского инструмента для изучения повседневного взаимодействия, выделяются преимущества метода: натуралистическая установка, внимание к мультимодальности и организации взаимодействия, рассмотрение роли объектов и материальной среды. Мы описываем специфические черты работы с видео, такие как возможность повторного воспроизведения, различия и сходства исследовательского и «профессионального» (или «бытового») анализа видео, рефлексивность процесса производства, обработки и обсуждения данных. Использование видео в социологических исследованиях в статье показано как пространство методологических альтернатив и решений: где установить камеру, какое программное обеспечение использовать для хранения и редактирования записей, как транскрибировать и представлять данные, анализировать ли фрагменты в формате дата-сессий - это набор выборов, имеющих значительные последствия. Выбор делается исследователем исходя из его вопросов и установок, но отчасти - диктуется особенностями объекта и инструментария. Перспективы видеоанализа показаны на примере исследований посетителей музеев: производится обзор недавних проектов, применяющих данный подход, а также демонстрируется, каким образом социолог может создать, транскрибировать и проанализировать видеофрагмент.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117324903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to common media and theoretical wisdom tagging Soviet society as “totalitarian,” Kozlova proposed a vivid theoretical picture consisting of diverse everyday practices and social techniques comprising the Soviet version of modernity. This picture is based on the thorough sociological and anthropological analysis of different autobiographical narratives and diaries of everyday life as written by ordinary actors of Soviet modernization. The theoretical analysis of the Soviet modernity presented in this “bottom-up” perspective radically puts the theoretical relevance of any unifying and undifferentiated dominant political and ideological concepts and narratives that depict its history as the one of endless repression leaving no room for the actions of individual actors to be brought into question. The article analyses the detrimental influence of widespread media and theoretical narratives based on such ideologically informed concepts as “totalitarianism,” “internal colonization,” or “open society” on the theoretical conceptualization of the Soviet experience. It argues that the mainstream, uncritical usage of these stigmatizing narratives in the Russian media and in social science impedes new ways of thinking about the Soviet experience. Following the theoretical insights revealed by the research project of Natalya Kozlova, the paper explores the topics of agency, power, and the production of subjectivity while proposing the invention of ways for a more sophisticated comprehension of Soviet society within a wider context of the political theory of modernity.","PeriodicalId":137616,"journal":{"name":"The Russian Sociological Review","volume":"458 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116181820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
