In delineating the social, economic, „political,‟ cultural, and psychological hurdles facing women, Dangarembga invites the reader to see beyond and re-interpret the lines of oppositional ideologies which come into play between male and female characters as they struggle for more space, recognition, self-actualization, and identity in a chauvinistic, male-dominated environment. As such, leaning on sociology, psychology, postcolonial and queer theories, deconstruction, feminism, this article sets out to underscore the bedrock of dichotomic outlooks and the rationales behind the unflinching battles for agencies and identifies. Thus, the interplay between culture(s), ideologies, behavioral contradictions, and paradoxes of selves, power, and the shaping of agencies in the attempts to end subalternity is emphasized by means of axiology, dialogism, rhetoric, and discourse analysis","PeriodicalId":137524,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Studies in English Language and Literature","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130517421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the basis of a comprehension of those complicated structures with nominalization, the authors of this paper have, under a cognitive-functional framework with Systematic Functional Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics, attempted to recognize the cognitive mechanism underlying the process of nominalization and to crystalize its functions at ideational, interpersonal and textual levels, expounding the inherent relations in the semantic and lexico grammatical structures demonstrated in nominalization. Translation methods at the different levels are proposed, with sufficient supporting examples from the source text. By explaining the cognition and functions of English nominalization and by employing the proper translation methods, this paper is meant to be a widening of E-C translation in nominalization, which could help translators improve their translation skills, and deepen their understanding of the translation process in the translation practice.","PeriodicalId":137524,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Studies in English Language and Literature","volume":"245 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131726863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, Baker and West up (2003) stated, speaking is of vital importance outside the classroom; students who speak English well can have a greater chance for better education, finding good jobs and getting promotions. Nevertheless, according to Brown and Yule (1983), oral language production is often considered one of the most difficult aspects of language learning. Speaking represents a real challenge to most EFL students. In EFL contexts, they usually face difficulties in using English in the classroom -the only place for them to acquire this language especially when it comes to speaking skills. The issue is getting deservedly intentional to undergraduate students who are supposed to become the key manpower of every country. Many of them have problems in English speaking; and many factors may affect their performance. One of the affective variables may be inhibition among students. Inhibition is considered as a negative feeling which can hinder the presentation of a person in different situations.","PeriodicalId":137524,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Studies in English Language and Literature","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121317783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many southern African countries use English language as an official language while selected local languages are also used to teach in the schools. Zambia has been good at policy formulation, yet implementation has been a setback. The Educating Our Future policy documents gives the advantages of using local languages in the teaching and learning in the Zambian schools, yet this never materialised in implementation. The reason lies in the Zambian constitution which recognises seven languages as languages to be used in the regions for teaching and learning alongside English language. In south Africa, the country decentralised the language choice to the local councils hence regions have many languages being used as official languages alongside the regional languages. this is also coming into play in Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The benefits have been seen to outweigh the rigid monolingual policies. These include local language maintenance, cultural preservation and language development amongst the minority languages which Zambia has to learn from. This has given rise to studies which have investigated benefits and challenges in the local language use and integration in the teaching of linguistic diverse communities. This paper synthesises the different challenges from different countries and their unique benefitsso that a general conclusion is drawn on how the African schools are supposed to benefit from the studies conducted in the region. The study was a desk review which explored four articlesthat looked at benefits and challenges of translanguaging from sub-Saharan Africa.","PeriodicalId":137524,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Studies in English Language and Literature","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126563096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social historians and literary critics use the term ―Regency‖ to refer to this period, which is known as the transitional period between the Georgian era and the Victorian era. It was noted for its classiness and achievements in different fields, especially fine arts and architecture. The Regency social conventions and public manners advocated a public appearance of politeness and gentility. The prevailing code of conduct governed every social behaviour and communication, down to the way a woman held or moved her fan to indicate her interest in a gentleman. It was an era in which the social hierarchy was the core of everything and men and women of both sexes knew their place. Women were largely seen as submissive, independent, and passive. They did not inherit wealth, nor were they openly allowed to find their own means. Their role was limited to domestic duties. They were expected to sew, sing, dance, write, read and play music. Women's bodies were seen as something pure. They were not allowed to wear any kind of cosmetics or make-up that would make them look prettier or more attractive, neither were they allowed to wear clothes that would show their skin because society regarded woman as a possession of her husband and she was not allowed to mention words which have a sexual connotation in the presence of men. They were prevented from pursuing education or academic studies because education was another tool which gave individuals a sense of independence and self-confidence. Men are superior, women inferior. It is this mentality which led to the creation of a male-dominated society. Their identity and their fate ―were defined and controlled by men – fathers, husbands, or seducers‖ (Young, 119). Women are tamed and domesticated by men and society. First, it is her \"father that controls her fate until she gets married and then it is her husband that controls her fate until she dies\" (Mujis, 13).","PeriodicalId":137524,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Studies in English Language and Literature","volume":"228 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120927105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Developed by Halliday (1966), SFL argues that language is a resource for meaning making and is hierarchically organised into strata which are related to realisation. This hierarchical arrangement of language – called stratification – consists of four strata, namely, context, semantics, lexico grammar and phonology/graphology (Martin and Rose, 2003; Eggins, 2004; and Halliday and Webster, 2009). The strata build from the most abstract (the stratum of phonology/graphology) to the most concrete stratum of context, with the lexicogrammar and semantics strata being in-between. In SFL theorisation, language is seen as resource for making meaning and any text, such as Maupassant‟s The Necklace, is seen as an instance (technically called the instantiate) for conveying meaning. Thus, SFL looks at language as a system that performs some Abstract: This study drew upon the theoretical frontiers of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL); the literary notion of characterisation; and the methodological locale of Corpus Linguistics (CL) to study the characterisation of Mathilde in the ideational metafunction of Maupassant’s The Necklace. Drawing from Halliday’s (1966) theorisation of SFL and DiYanni’s (2002) conceptualisation of characterisation, the study has examined characterisation in a naturally occurring text titled The Necklace by use of a methodological backbone of CL methodology as espoused by Wu (2009). The corpus involved a single text hence the study was a monogeneric corpus-based study. Within the CL methodology, the ontological and epistemological dimensions of research were kept in check by the positivist and constructivist paradigms, thereby foregrounding a quantitative and qualitative approach to the study, respectively. Based on the nature of the objectives, a descriptive research design was used within which the qualitative and quantitative approaches were utilised. Content analysis was used as a method in analysing data obtained qualitatively while descriptive statistics was utilised in the analysis of data obtained quantitatively. Data collection and analysis drew on Wu (2009) and proceeded as follows: having read the story several times and understood it, the corpus was fed into the UAM Corpus Tool for semi-automated annotation. Frequency lists were then produced to categorise clauses into process-types. Thereafter, lexical and grammatical patterns associated with Mathilde were extracted. This was followed by the manual analysis of the data in accordance to Halliday (1971) in order to explore the characterisation of Math","PeriodicalId":137524,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Studies in English Language and Literature","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116238699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of an aggregate of common linguistic features that are distinct from those of other groups of language users can be a sign of shared values in a linguistic ‘community of practice’ (Eckert and McConnell-Ginet 1992). New members of such a community display their knowledge of the group’s practices, and thus their desire to be accepted as members of the community, by mimicking the language of more established members. The purpose of this research is to uncover stylistic features of a relatively new genre of text, online newspaper comments. This research argues that comments posted by readers of online newspapers provide us with the opportunity to both identify some shared stylistic features of a community of practice and to see how other readers evaluate the use of those features by deciding whether or not to approve or disapprove of the comments made. The top-rated comments from Mail Online newspaper articles with more than one thousand comments were collected over a period of one week, leading to a dataset of 65 comments that were analysed qualitatively using discourse analytic tools. The high number of approving votes for these comments suggests that other readers approve of their content and stylistic delivery. Previous studies (Anderson et al. 2014; Blom et al. 2014; Reagle 2015; Santana 2011) have suggested that online comments tend to be negative, but have said little about how the comments are realised or why there is a tendency to be negative. Based on the results of this analysis I argue that, through the use of common language choices (similar grammatical structures, little or no epistemic modality, implicature), commentators aim to accrue upvotes to validate themselves as core members of the Mail Online commentator community of practice.","PeriodicalId":137524,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Studies in English Language and Literature","volume":"1 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120989307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The benefits of citizen participation are capacity building, learning, raising awareness and increasing understanding of public institutions and the way they work, enabling citizens to better access the services they need, and to understand the boundaries and limitations of different public bodies, building confidence and optimism among citizens. Therefore, involvement of citizens in governance and political process is an essential part of democracy and increased citizen participation in governance can only be enhanced through civic education. In enhancing this, Universities, schools, civil Civic leaders and state agencies should partner Government conducting civic to increase public governance by educating citizens from all walks of life on the importance of participating all aspects of a democratic society, Myers (2007). Abstract: Civic education helps citizens to understand ideas about citizenship, politics and government as all citizens need knowledge to make decisions about policy choices and proper choices of representatives. Citizens need to participate in governance through voting, volunteering, participating in other activities that benefit society. It is also important to state that civic learning experiences to education is the process of creating awareness and provision of information and equip and empower citizens to participate positively in the democratic processes of their community, country and the outside world. Thus, the study aimed at assessing the effects of civic education on youth participation in the tenets of a democratic society in the four rural ward of Bahati Constituency of Mansa district in Luapula Province of Zambia. The study employed both the qualitative and quantitative methods and a descriptive survey design that sampled Head teachers, teachers, NGO officials, Council chairperson, councilors, community members and the youth. Data was obtained from the respondents by means of interviews and questionnaires. Frequency, percentages, tables, graphs and pie-charts were used to analyze the qualitative and quantitative data. Data was then analyzed by the use of software MS access and MS Excel. The findings reviewed that civic education plays an important role in promoting youth and other citizens’ involvement in all aspects of a democratic society, it is also a tool in promoting democracy and the study recommended that learners in schools should participate in governance of their classrooms, schools and be engaged in service and project based learning and NGOs and other stake holders to promote civic education in rural areas.","PeriodicalId":137524,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Studies in English Language and Literature","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123863051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Au plan musical spécifiquement, ce désir de se distinguer des autres, de ses confrères se veut plus vif. L’artiste musicien dont les œuvres font l’objet de notre analyse, dans le cadre de ce travail, aurait créé sa marque déposée parmi les confrères de son époque. Lorsque l’on parle de Daouda Koné, on s’attend plus ou moins à entendre parler d’amour, car c’est son thème favori et la quasi-totalité de ses tubes aborde ledit thème. En plus d’évoquer le thème de l’amour, il est aussi le spécialiste des dilemmes à tel enseigne que plusieurs de ses tubes plongent l’auditeur dans une réflexion profonde assortie d’une complexité d’opérer un choix judicieux. Cet article se propose d’étudier ce fait marquant de la musique de Daouda Le Sentimental à savoir le dilemme. Ainsi, la question de recherche est libellée comme suit : quels sont les différents dilemmes à enregistrer dans les chansons de Daouda Koné ? Nous partons de l’hypothèse selon laquelle les chansons de Daouda Koné ne posent pas les mêmes dilemmes. L’objectif assigné à ce travail est donc de découvrir et d’analyser les dilemmes présents dans les chansons de cet artiste, notamment les chansons cibles. L’ossature du présent travail est constituée par les points suivants : le cadre théorique et conceptuel, le cadre méthodologique, la justification du choix du sujet et de l’artiste Daouda Koné, le résumé des chansons cibles et l’identification des différents dilemmes suivi de leur analyse.
