Recognition of Nominalization in English Academic Writings and Its Translation into Chinese

: English academic writings with a considerable density of nominalization make the English-Chinese translation a hard job, one of the challenges is to render the source text with nominalizing expressions more explicit in the target language. On the basis of a comprehension of those complicated structures with nominalization, the authors of this paper have, under a cognitive-functional framework with Systematic Functional Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics, attempted to recognize the cognitive mechanism underlying the process of nominalization and to crystalize its functions at ideational, interpersonal and textual levels, expounding the inherent relations in the semantic and lexico grammatical structures demonstrated in nominalization. Translation methods at the different levels are proposed, with sufficient supporting examples from the source text. By explaining the cognition and functions of English nominalization and by employing the proper translation methods, this paper is meant to be a widening of E-C translation in nominalization, which could help translators improve their translation skills, and deepen their understanding of the translation process in the translation practice.
