This form of communication uses textual messages that respect SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol). The interface of the service can be described in WSDL (Web Service Description Language) and published on independent UDDI (Universal Directory, Discovery and Integration) servers. XML-based communication is efficient from the viewpoint of programming ease and flexibility of the design. The main drawback is the huge system support required and high overhead of parsing textual messages. Our research has been targeted to the design and implementation of a development infrastructure needed to implement SOAP services on small devices - even on those without a standard OS support. The main component is the compiler that takes a WSDL description of the service as its input and creates the SOAP analyzer. Generating final executable code from the model of the system is preferred to hand-coding the implementation, but this is seldom done in one step-usually there are several cascading transformations that eventually result in the executable system. We explain how the concept of the technological space (TS) can be used to define and describe the layers between cascading transformations, and the transformations themselves. In some cases, dependability requirements are realized by functionality that cross-cuts designs. Aspect-oriented modeling (AOM) methods allow developers to localize such cross-cutting functionality in design modeling views called aspects. Aspects can be composed with other design views to obtain an integrated view of a design. This paper presents a technique that extends such methods to cover dependability requirements that are not directly realized by functional structures in a design. Performance goals provide examples of such requirements. We also present a trade-off mechanism to rank feasible solutions with respect to requirements priorities between different dependability requirements. This paper presents concepts of a specification-driven design framework aiming at IEEE 1451-based embedded distributed systems that consist of smart components connected to Internet. It deals with an integrated networking framework stemming from the IEEE 1451.1 object-based networking model, complemented by the Internet Protocol (IP) multicast that mediates efficient and unified access from Internet to distributed components. It also proposes a framework within which optimisation may occur, and suggests the research that needs to be done. The paper follows through on software's dominance in complex systems to determine the feasibility of raising complex computer based system design to a new level of practice by enabling optimisation and refinement built upon architectural modelling. The paper draws on optimisation in chemical, control system and aeronautical engineering for its techniques and tools. The major issues are: how to apply optimisation to complex systems; how to apply refinement in a scalable, inclusive manner; how to extend architectural modelling to encompass optimisation and refinement. Additionally, a visual design guidance system need to be developed for the designer, and an appropriate design process is to be developed.
