Mutations of the collagen type III alpha 1 chain, COL3A1 gene, are primarily linked to vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS); however, they can also contribute to structural changes in the tissue, like bullae of the lungs. In this case report, we present a young, thinly built boy who died due to a spontaneous pneumothorax. Post-mortem genetic testing revealed a novel COL3A1 mutation, likely contributing to the pathogenic events underlying death due to spontaneous pneumothorax. We recommend implementing genetic testing of correlative or causative genes in the context of SP.
","PeriodicalId":12449,"journal":{"name":"Forensic Science, Medicine and Pathology","volume":" ","pages":"1296-1298"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142978190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We aimed to analyze the specimen of an autopsy case from the year 1929 in which severe thoracic spine erosion occurred due to syphilitic aneurism and to demonstrate findings by multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT). The specimen comprises an en-block-eviscerated heart, thoracic aorta, thoracic spine, and posterior segments of the ribs, with a partial section of the heart and a longitudinal section of the aorta. We performed histology and MDCT analyses almost a century after the autopsy and revised the original case documentation. The conducted analyses confirmed the characteristic pathology. Most importantly, MDCT imaging revealed intriguing destruction of the vertebral bodies by the pulsatile saccular aneurysm of the descending aorta. The calcified aneurysm led to the extensive irregular mechanically caused osteolysis of the anterior segments of the several vertebral corpora. After the analysis and revision of the original case documentation, we discussed these findings, as well as additional characteristic autopsy findings in syphilis-related deaths, some of which might be forgotten. The direct close contact of the syphilitic aortic aneurysm with the thoracic spine was preserved. By utilizing postmortem MDCT and 3D reconstruction, we better visualize the thoracic spine bone resorption and alteration: in the time of Milovanović, only roentgenography was available, providing less detail.
","PeriodicalId":12449,"journal":{"name":"Forensic Science, Medicine and Pathology","volume":" ","pages":"1581-1588"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143440491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has permitted a non-/minimally invasive approach to postmortem examinations.

Case report: A 65-year-old male, a known patient with ischaemic heart disease, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia, who had defaulted treatment, was found dead at home. The body was brought to the National Hospital Kandy for post-mortem examination. The internal dissection revealed a haemopericardium of 50 ml. Bleeding into the epicardial tissue throughout the course of the circumflex artery was noted. With the suspicion of coronary artery aneurysm rupture/dissection, ex-situ contrast-enhanced radiography was done on the heart to identify the point of bleeding. This was done by cannulating the left coronary ostia, through which a contrast dye was injected and X-ray images taken. With the assistance of the radiographs combined with careful dissection and histology, circumflex artery dissection and the rupture site were identified more accurately.

Conclusion: VA has many uses, as an adjunct to CA to accentuate the findings of CA and enable targeted system-specific CA. Although corrosives are among the least preferred agents for suicide due to the extreme pain caused and the possibility of prolonged suffering instead of immediate death, cases of ingestion continue to be observed. Commonly ingested corrosive substances include acids such as hydrochloric and sulfuric acid, alkalis such as sodium and potassium hydroxide, heavy metal salts, formalin, and iodine tincture. However, previous literature has not reported cases of poisoning with lactic acid preparations in adults. In this report, we discuss the death of a 67-year-old male following the consumption of Lactisan, a commercial preparation of lactic acid used in the dairy industry. The diagnosis and management of lactic acid poisoning pose challenges due to the lack of any previous data and the short half-life of lactic acid in the bloodstream. This study addresses a significant gap in the field of forensic facial reconstruction focusing on facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT) and facial reconstruction techniques specifically tailored to the Thai population. By developing and implementing the 3D (three-dimensional) facial reconstruction program and compiling an extensive dataset of FSTT, this research makes substantial progress in advancing forensic facial reconstruction methodologies employing the combination Manchester Method, 3D skull images obtained through cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were reconstructed using Autodesk Maya software. A dataset comprising 100 Thai cadavers underwent FSTT measurements via ultrasound (US) for 53 landmarks, with subsequent facial comparisons of 10 samples between reconstructed faces and real photographs conducted using the facial pool comparison and the structural similarity index (SSIM). The accuracy of facial pool comparison ranged from 30 to 80%, reflecting a wide range due to human errors. Thus, incorporating computerized assessment is necessary to minimize human bias. SSIM values ranged from 0.76 to 0.89, indicating strong similarity between reconstructed and real faces and validating the reconstruction process's accuracy. These findings suggest that the facial soft tissue thickness database of the Thai population used in this study can effectively support 3D computerized facial reconstruction. Moreover, this study sets the stage for future advancements in facial reconstruction methodologies tailored to diverse populations, emphasizing the ongoing need for comprehensive data gathering and technique refinement to enhance accuracy and applicability in forensic investigations.
","PeriodicalId":12449,"journal":{"name":"Forensic Science, Medicine and Pathology","volume":" ","pages":"1112-1126"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143003163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method includes assessments of sex, age, stature, and ancestry. Sex assessment is the first step in biological profiling, as it influences other assessments. Age estimation is a particularly challenging aspect. Combining sex and age assessment may improve accuracy in age estimation. Researchers often use the pelvis and skull bones for these assessments due to their prevalence at crime scenes and their higher accuracy in evaluation. However, the talus, a foot bone with robust density, resilience, and resistance to damage, is another bone frequently encountered at crime scenes and may be a valuable subject for study. Medical imaging technology, particularly micro-CT imaging, supports sex and age assessment. Micro-CT images can significantly enhance the accuracy of assessments. The high resolution of these images presents an exciting opportunity for exploration in conjunction with artificial intelligence (AI), which has revolutionized forensic science workflows. AI can potentially improve the efficiency and accuracy of sex and age assessment from bones. This article compiles research on past sex and age assessments and evaluations of the talus, including the application of micro-CT images to support these assessments. In this systematic review, we analyzed the current literature focusing on methods employed for state-of-the-art identification of skeletal remains of transgender and gender-diverse individuals in forensic anthropology, including the effects on the skeleton of gender-affirming hormone therapy and/or facial gender-affirmation surgery. Our findings support the need for additional studies using larger sample sizes and control groups involving different treatment regimens or longitudinal studies at different follow-up intervals. On the other hand, the most frequent non-SIDS diagnoses may be attributed to specific causes of death including a heterogeneous spectrum of conditions and disorders (e.g., trauma, asphyxia, suffocation, infection and metabolic diseases). Although rare, milk aspiration is a recognized cause of SUID that can lead to acute respiratory failure. This case report describes the death of a three-month-old infant found unresponsive in a traditional African baby carrier. Gross examination revealed no significant anomalies other than increased lung weight and the presence of milk-like material in the airways, alveoli, and stomach. Histological and ultrastructural analyses identified granular brownish material with birefringent globules in the lungs, consistent with aspirated milk. Immunohistochemical staining was positive for beta-lactoglobulin, confirming formula milk aspiration. This evidence was crucial in excluding maternal negligence as a cause of death, instead supporting an ante-mortem aspiration event resulting from regurgitation.
