A classical case to be studied is the compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) without power factor correction being implemented. It has become evident that the use of CFLs alone is more or less accountable to the non-linear loads generated in rural electrification schemes in Sri Lanka. A case study was also done by the authors on a chosen low voltage distribution network to analyze the impact of CFL loads and the capabilities of the network with regard to IEEE 519 regulations. The methods of analysis and the results are presented in this paper and PSCAD software has been used to simulate the system. The commercial aspects of using CFLs and energy saving have been discussed. Harmonic effects on the distribution transformers are studied as applied to the line segment considered in the study","PeriodicalId":122994,"journal":{"name":"First International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116750572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a significant reduction in the capacity of the energy storage unit may not guarantee that the voltage supply filtered by DVR is compatible with the sensitivity of the protected load. To achieve a balance between the compatibility and the cost saving of using DVR, an algorithm is developed and integrated with a voltage sag prediction method to derive two essential bar charts. By using these bar charts and the available voltage tolerance curve of the protected load, one can determine the optimum capacity of the energy storage unit that may ensure a balance between the compatibility and the maximum cost saving of using DVR","PeriodicalId":122994,"journal":{"name":"First International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115952833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a technology capable of sending data signals through the power lines thus enabling the possibility of a local area network (LAN) or Internet access via the power-lines and power sockets in our home. In this project we explore the possibility of the diffusion of this technology in Jamaica, and also conclude on the feasibility of its implantation as both a means of setting up a LAN and as a means of broadband Internet access. Our sources vary from previous publications on the technology, and also surveys conducted on students at the University of Technology. A qualitative research was undertaken. The main objective of this research was to investigate the possibilities of broadband over power-line technology, as compared to other existing network solutions (WiFi, Ethernet cabling). The feasibility of its practical implementation was also explored in the study. We also carried out three implementations of the technology, to asses the capabilities and limitations of the BELKIN BPL adapters that were purchased for the study. Our findings are illustrated throughout the body of this research.","PeriodicalId":122994,"journal":{"name":"First International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131785826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These proposed sensing techniques seem to be useful in the aspects of functional integration and economization of sensors. The former proposed technique, multi-functional sensing is the unique one utilizing only one sensor that has two or more sensing functions and then that can recognize two or more input information in the same time, while the conventional use of a sensor has been dominant which is generally functioned for one sensing purpose. As the example of a multi-functional sensor, a soft tactile sensor to discriminate the surface condition, the softness and the property of test materials are introduced. The latter proposed technique, reference-free sensing is also the novel technique with only two kinds of measurement results at the two different measurement conditions for the expected decision or recognition in the circumstances, and that has no needs of providing of reference data in advance. As the examples of the reference-free sensing, an ultrasonic reference-free sensor for recognizing the existence of water in the oil container, and a reference-free electric conductance sensor for the detection of vehicular engine oil deterioration are described with good experimental results.","PeriodicalId":122994,"journal":{"name":"First International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129229420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
