From the data gathered by means of vibration analysis a mathematical model was developed using reliability engineering tools such as the Weibull distribution. From this it can be seen that by trending data that is periodically recorded an accurate indication of equipment failure can be established. The result of this study is an indicative tool for maintenance personnel during and after predictive and preventive maintenance.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124340482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, the optimal dimensions to improve the technical and economical performances of the hybrid system are determined according to the load energy requirements, the solar and water resources and the importance of supply continuity. The proposed system's installation and operating costs are simulated using the Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable (HOMER) with the stream flow, the solar radiation and the system components costs as inputs; and then compared with those of other supply options such as grid extension and diesel generation.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132073156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm assumes a limited number of nodes (beacons) in the network are equipped with a location finding mechanism such as GPS. Nodes on the perimeter range of a beacon echo the beacons virtual ID to all nodes within range. This approach reduces the number of messages required to achieve network localization.The advantage of PEA is reduced power consumption and reduced flooding of the network because the beacon nodes only transmit an initialisation message once within a specific range and only those sensor nodes on the edge of a transmitting node's range, re-transmits the message.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133982407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increase in complexity is due to the increase in the number of radio frequency chains to be decoded at the receiver end. To try to address the problem of complexity associated with an increase in the number of antennas, antenna selection was proposed. For the purpose of this study transmit antenna selection will be considered. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance as you increase the number of antennas in the system will be studied. Maximal-ratio-combining (MRC) will be considered as the optimal combining technique at the receiver end. The bit-error-rate (BER) performance for different fading parameters β will be studied. In carrying out all these performance analysis the Weibull fading channel will be considered.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127225867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As electrical load data is highly non-linear in nature, in the proposed approach, we first separate out the linear and the non-linear parts, and then forecast the load using the non-linear part only. The Semi-parametric spectral estimation method is used to decompose a load data signal into a harmonic linear signal model and a non-linear trend. A support vector machine is then used to predict the non-linear trend. The final predicted signal is then found by adding the support vector machine predicted trend and the linear signal part. With careful determination of the linear component, the performance of the proposed method seems to be more robust than using only the raw load data, and in many cases the predicted signal of the proposed method is more accurate when we have only a small training set.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127372496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Backlight consisting of white LEDs has the merit of high luminous efficiency while is not possible to change color temperature. Backlight with colorful LEDs of red, green, blue to form white lights can reach various color temperatures while luminous efficiency is not as high as white LED backlight. A mixed backlight combining white and colorful LEDs is presented in this paper to preserve the merits of both kinds of LED backlights. High luminous efficiency white LEDs provide most of luminance and colorful LEDs are only lightened when color temperature is to change. An implementation is realized. The experimental results show that the theoretical model is appropriated and the mixed backlight presents the high luminous efficiency with less LEDs and possibility to change color temperature.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115746127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This new estimator is applicable to any linearly-modulated signal. It is a non-data-aided (NDA) method since no a priori knowledge is assumed about the transmitted data. The channel gains and phase distortions on the different subcarriers are assumed to be constant during the observation window, and the signal is assumed to be corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The performances of our estimator are empirically assessed using Monte-Carlo simulations, showing that the new algorithm reaches the corresponding Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) over a wide SNR range.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115879134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
