The implication of including WLAN as part of the computing infrastructure means more critical information and data is carried over the air. The threats of intrusion and denial of service is real since wireless networks have broadcasted traffic. IEEE 802.11 defines WEP, WPA and WPA2 security protocols as possible countermeasures. The most recent model defined by IEEE, the WPA2 emphasizes data confidentiality, integrity and authentication but pays little attention to availability issues. Management and control frames in WPA2 are still sent in clear making the model vulnerable to DoS attacks. The failure recovery processes requires reauthentication and reassociation a fact which makes the model easily exploited by various DoS attacks. WPA2, defines a hybrid network that implements both WEP and TKIP together with WPA2 which creates a vulnerability called security level roll back attack thus making the strong confidentiality and Integrity measures in WPA2 be as weak as WEP. In this paper, we propose an integrated security model (ISM) that incorporates a drop policy to defend against DoS attacks. We assume the use CCMP to provide Confidentiality and Integrity and use EAP-TTLS/802.11x with RADIUS to provide authentication. We use simulation in OPNET to show that our security model performs better to provide improved security in terms of confidentiality, integrity, authenticity and availability.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115234531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The lecturer in the field of engineering has therefore to evaluate teaching and learning through writing tasks as they are traditionally known, and ask why assessment focuses on students' weaknesses - why does assessment instead not meet the student at his point of strength, and lead him from there? It is at this point that the various factors contributing to the learning experience of the student merge into one multi-faceted concept - assessment. Assessment skills are part of the learning process, yet equipping engineering lecturers with such skills in theory and practice is minimal. Assumptions are that if one is qualified in a content area, one can teach that content and objectively assess one's students. This is not always true. Reviewing assessment of the written word is vital because language is the means to academic success. The responsibility lying with the engineering lecturer when assessing writing tasks is further compounded by the education context, the worldview of the educator and the experience of the learner. Common issues confronting engineering educators and students emerge. This paper addresses some such issues.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123138824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a variety of reasons, it is desirable to keep transmission corridors as slender as possible, i.e. keeping the number of lines as small as possible, while still keeping adequate stability and power transmission capacity over the corridor. This is true, no matter if it concerns a green-field project, or if it is a question of extending an existing transmission corridor into higher power transmission capability.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"126 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116706623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach to collect data is not only expensive, but also hard to install. The use of languages other than English has been growing exponentially on the Web. Amharic language belongs to one of these languages. Web documents in Amharic language are increasing very fast. The number of Internet users in Ethiopia is growing dramatically. Nevertheless, the major search engines have been lagging behind in providing search features to handle this language. Therefore, a web search engine that considers the typical characteristics of the Amharic language is needed. In this paper, we present our design and implementation of a Search Engine system for Amharic language web documents. The search engine helps users to search Amharic documents of their interest on the Web. This engine allows indexing and searching of Amharic documents written in multiple encoding representations. The Crawler, Indexer and Query Engine are the basic components of this search engine that considers the typical characteristics of the Amharic language.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128238082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By offsetting one of the ridges in the direction of propagation, a much wider single mode operating bandwidth can be achieved than that achievable in a traditional symmetric QRWG OMT's. This wide single mode operating bandwidth ensures that no higher order modes are excited at the feeds of the OMT, which in turn eliminates unwanted resonances often observed in traditional QRWG OMT's. The performance of the OMT is similar to that of traditional types, with reflections below −20 dB and cross coupling below −40 dB across most of the desired 1.7∶1 bandwidth.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121215184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This group of population is cut off from any infrastructure which would support their life and development very effective (communication, information, health care). It is the aim of the project to introduce solar power supply to these areas. Commercial solar power supply system's turned out to be too cost intensive and cannot be maintained and fixed by local technicians. Based on a cooperation between a Zambian and an Austrian University a solar power supply system was designed. The results show that with a comparatively low effort a basic level power supply can be established with a very simple system architecture which is open for any manipulation and maintenance in Africa. The system can be extended according to any growing power demand. A combination of different solar module types is possible since a micro maximum power point tracking device was designed.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"2013 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114198308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many approaches have been proposed in the previous studies, but the results correlation with subjective experiments still need further optimization, especially for quality determination using languages with unique phonetic structures i.e. clicking sounds. Moreover, the evaluation test data is always a key element in order to obtain representative and consistent results. In this paper, we introduce TESPAR coding technique for the design of a new algorithm for speech (voice) quality measurement in cellular/wireless telecommunication networks. Our experiments show that the results from this algorithm correlates well with subjective experiments using a variety of speech samples. The proposed algorithm is also computationally efficient than the existing methods and is suitable for quality measurement of longer speech signals than the current 8 seconds speech test data mostly in use today.","PeriodicalId":122830,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2009","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121565813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
