Their understanding allowed a substantial brightness gain by adequate layout modifications. The phenomenon is described analytically in terms of time coherence effects. This serves as a basis for further detailed numerical simulations of the experiment by means of stepwise ray-tracing, and allows precise interpretation of the spectral, polarization and intensity measurements collected at LEP. It also provides guidelines for SR diagnostic at the injection energy in LHC.","PeriodicalId":122662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1997 Particle Accelerator Conference (Cat. This paper discusses an approach to the design of these colliders such that the desired performance parameters, e.g. beam-beam tune shift and luminosity are achieved at the equilibrium values of the beam emittance and momentum spread. The design procedure is described, involving the design of the interaction regions, the arcs, and the RF system. The thresholds and/or growth rates of several collective effects, and the growth times for intra-beam scattering are estimated. The consequences of the synchrotron radiation are discussed in the conclusions.","PeriodicalId":122662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1997 Particle Accelerator Conference (Cat. Although most measurements were obtained at an intermediate energy of 120 GeV, more recently we had the opportunity to extract protons from a coasting beam at 14 GeV and 270 GeV, thus exploiting the full available energy range of the SPS. The phase shifters in the hybrid outputs and three waveguide switches are used to choose an operation mode in any one of twelve possible configurations using three to five klystrons to power the storage ring and booster. High early failure rates led to examination of the operating conditions and failure modes. Internal ceramic contamination caused premature failure of gun potting material and ultimate tube demise through arcing or ceramic fracture. A planned course of repotting and reconditioning of approximately 300 klystrons, plus careful attention to operating conditions and periodic analysis of operational data, has substantially reduced the failure rate. It is anticipated that implementation of planned supplemental monitoring systems for the klystrons will allow most catastrophic failures to be avoided. By predicting end of life, tubes can be changed out before they fail, thus minimizing unplanned downtime. Initial tests have also been conducted on this same klystron operated at higher voltages with resultant higher output power. The outcome of these tests will provide information to be considered for future upgrades to the accelerator.","PeriodicalId":122662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1997 Particle Accelerator Conference (Cat. This unit will serve as the \"proof of principle\" for the revolutionary new RF Focused Drift tube (RFD) linac structure. Both the prototype and the production unit will operate at 600 MHz. The prototype comprises a 25-keV proton ion source, an einzel-lens-based LEBT, a 0.65-m-long RFQ linac to 0.8 MeV, and a 0.35-m-long RFD linac to 2.5 MeV. The two linac structures will be resonantly coupled together and powered by a collection of planar triodes. The entire assembly will be evacuated by 2 turbomolecular pumps and 1 ion pump. The alignment philosophy is based on precision machining and \"hard socket\" for installation of the drift tubes. Fabrication methods for achieving the required precision will be described. Installation of a Laboratory Building to house the prototype is nearing completion. The prototype is scheduled for completion in the fall of 1997. The status of this project after 7 months of funded activity is reported.","PeriodicalId":122662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1997 Particle Accelerator Conference (Cat.
