Some soft real-time tasks and best-effort tasks will be starved when using traditional RM algorithm to schedule streaming media services. Aiming at this problem, an improved RM algorithm with elastic priority is proposed in this paper. The algorithm can prevent periodic streaming media tasks from starvation, improving QoS of streaming media system. For video streaming applications, it is a challenge to provide the scalability while maintaining the central manageability and the robustness. In this paper, we propose the centralized peer-to-peer streaming protocol (P2PSP), which features the centralized management, guaranteed perceived quality of service (PQoS), while decentralized the traffic loads. To evaluate the protocol, a layered video coding technique based on 3D discrete cosine transform (DCT) is designed. This codec applies self-organizing tree map (SOTM) to generate cascaded vector quantization codebooks. We investigate dynamic features such as the swing of the hands/legs, the sway of the upper body and static features like height in both frontal and side views. Both probabilistic and non-probabilistic techniques are used for matching the features. Various combination strategies may be used depending upon the gait features being combined. We discuss three simple rules: the sum, product and MIN rules that are relevant to our feature sets. In this paper, we evaluate the suitability of protocols and strategies across different layers of the stack to provide real-time services over 802.11b wireless LANs. More specifically, within the context of cross-layer design, we compare the performance of UDP with UDP lite - a proposed framework, which improves bandwidth utilization by delivering partially damaged packets to the realtime application. First, we study the high-level end-to-end throughput improvement achieved by making cross-layer modifications to support a UDP lite framework. We compare the quality of perceived media rendered by UDP (dropped packets only) and UDP lite (dropped and corrupted packets). This formulates one of the key findings of this study, that is, although UDP lite improves the overall high-level throughput by relaying corrupted packets to the real-time application, it fails to provide significant enhancement in perceived media quality. This can, in part, be attributed to the bursty nature of errors and losses that we observed at the application layer regardless of the selected transport protocol. Finally, we compare the error-recovery/concealment overhead required by UDP and UDP lite in order to deliver lossless multimedia. We conclude that the overhead required by UDP lite is considerably lower than UDP, since the received corrupted packets that are delivered by UDP lite (but not by UDP) facilitate error-recovery.","PeriodicalId":118560,"journal":{"name":"2003 International Conference on Multimedia and Expo. For PC-based Internet multimedia, the existence of separate audio and system clocks on either end-host can introduce significant complications. Much work has taken place in recent years that addresses the issue of system clock skew and its effect on precise delay measurement. In a voice over IP (VoIP) environment, where adaptive buffering techniques are employed, system and audio clock skew can distort both delay measurement and playout control as well as lead to poor buffer performance. This paper presents a high level mechanism to measure and compensate for the skew relationships between system and audio clocks at each end of a multimedia session. The mechanism utilises both the network time protocol (NTP) and the RTP (realtime transport protocol) control protocol or RTCP. It is now granted the power of computing mechanism as any other programming languages to facilitate the creation of high interactive multimedia contents. Game-applications therefore can be also considered as a new output-feature of the MPEG-4 standard. The work describes in detail how game can be created within the MPEG-4 framework. In low-bit-rate image and video compression and communication systems, high frequency transformed coefficients are often lost due to aggressive quantization or un-even error protection schemes. However, with the block-based encoding and transmission methods, the amount of high frequency texture loss is uneven between adjacent blocks. As such, it is possible to exploit this texture-level correlation between adjacent image blocks to reconstruct the lost texture. In this paper we use a heuristic method called sort-merge feature selection to construct automatically a hierarchy of small subsets of features that are progressively more useful for segmentation. A novel combination of fastmap for dimensionality reduction and Mahalanobis distance for likelihood determination is used as induction algorithm. Because these induced feature sets from a hierarchy with increasing classification accuracy, video segments can be segmented and categorized simultaneously in a coarse-fine manner that efficiently and progressively detects and refines their temporal boundaries. Image-based relighting offers such capability. However, the trade-off is the enormous increase of storage requirement. In this paper, we propose a compression scheme that effectively reduces the data volume while maintaining the real-time relighting capability. The proposed method is based on principal component analysis (PCA). A block-wise PCA is used to practically process the huge input data. The output of PCA is a set of eigenimages and the corresponding relighting coefficients. By dropping those low-energy eigenimages, the data size is drastically reduced. To further compress the data, eigenimages left are compressed using transform coding and quantization while the relighting coefficients are compressed using uniform quantization. We also suggest the suitable target bit rate for each phase of the compression method in order to preserve the visual quality. The 3-D direction of motion of the object is robustly estimated from the video sequence. Given this direction any other view of the object can be synthesized through a perspective projection approach, under assumptions of planarity. If the distance of the object from the camera is large, a planar approximation is reasonable even for non-planar scenes. Such a method has many important applications, one of them being gait recognition where a side view of the person is required. Our method can be used to synthesize the side-view of the person in case he/she does not present a side view to the camera. Since the planarity assumption is often an approximation, the effects of non-planarity can lead to inaccuracies in rendering and needs to be corrected for. Regions where this happens are examined and a simple technique based on weak perspective approximation is proposed to offset rendering inaccuracies.
