Resorbable implants present several advantages over conventional metal implants, including a lower risk of infection, elimination of the need for implant removal, and gradual degradation during the healing process. Their application in equine patients has shown promising results in two cases involving low-stress anatomical regions such as the nasal and maxillary bones. Alternative fixation methods, such as titanium plates, provide superior mechanical stability but are associated with a higher risk of implant-related complications. In the future, 3D-printed patient-specific implants may offer a customised approach to fracture repair. The increasing accessibility of 3D printing technology presents new opportunities for preoperative planning and customised implant designs, potentially improving surgical outcomes in select cases.
","PeriodicalId":11786,"journal":{"name":"Equine Veterinary Education","volume":"37 8","pages":"410-415"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2025-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/eve.14143","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144537244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Standard foot radiographs were unremarkable. Digital venography of the hoof demonstrated a significant lack of contrast filling in the terminal papilla, circumflex vessel and solar vessels in the region of the medial toe. Findings from the venogram were used to locate the abscess tract and establish drainage. Approximately 3 h after establishing drainage of the subsolar abscess, a second digital venogram was performed. This subsequent venogram revealed near complete resolution of the previously described contrast filling defects. The only deficit noted was a slight decrease in the filling of the terminal papilla in a small area at the medial toe. This case demonstrates the utility of digital venography as a simple, accessible imaging modality available to the field practitioner, providing more accurate lesion identification and localisation, resulting in faster resolution of a subsolar abscess.
","PeriodicalId":11786,"journal":{"name":"Equine Veterinary Education","volume":"37 10","pages":"e208-e211"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2025-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://beva.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/eve.14139","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144935407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The lameness was recurrent despite medication of the right fore distal interphalangeal joint. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed proliferative intermediate-to-low signal tissue in the location of the dorsal recess of the distal interphalangeal joint, with an overlying defect in the common digital extensor tendon. Given persistent right forelimb lameness over the following 24 months, with no improvement to the medication of the distal interphalangeal joint, a palmar digital neurectomy was performed. Three months following the neurectomy, the patient presented for a grade 4/5 right forelimb lameness. There was a firm, expanding swelling around the coronary band. Repeat diagnostic analgesia showed resolution of the lameness with local infiltration of anaesthetic around the firm swelling. At surgery, a soft tissue mass was surgically resected en bloc. The mass was histologically identified as a keratoma. To the authors' knowledge, there are no published reports of keratoma proximal to the coronary band that does not involve the hoof wall structure or underlying middle phalanx. Surgical removal of the keratoma resulted in significant improvement in right forelimb lameness at the 11-week post-op recheck and resolution of the right forelimb lameness 15 weeks post-operatively.
\u0000
","PeriodicalId":11786,"journal":{"name":"Equine Veterinary Education","volume":"37 8","pages":"e141-e146"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2025-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144537269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mare presented a history of chronic weight loss and bilateral perineal swelling. The right-sided swelling displayed signs of being chronic, while the left side experienced a singular episode of acute perineal swelling, coinciding with signs of colic. Due to concerns regarding potential recurrent colic episodes and the risk of bowel entrapment, the mare was hospitalised to perform a complete clinical and diagnostic assessments, and to establish an appropriate treatment. Based on history, clinical manifestations, results of palpation and ultrasonography, it was determined that the swelling was indicative of bilateral perineal hernia. An initial attempt at surgical correction through appositional herniorrhaphy proved unsuccessful. Subsequently, a novel technique involving the transposition of the semimembranosus muscle was employed as a secondary intervention. This alternative surgical method effectively addressed the issue without any short- or long-term recurrence or complications. In conclusion, perineal hernias should be included in differential diagnoses for perineal swelling in equids. Furthermore, when appositional herniorrhaphy proves ineffective, transposition of the semimembranosus muscle may be considered as a surgical option.
","PeriodicalId":11786,"journal":{"name":"Equine Veterinary Education","volume":"37 11","pages":"e283-e290"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2025-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://beva.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/eve.14122","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145237183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
