This paper proposes an adaptive grounding scheme to limit the ground fault currents to a safe level. To do so, a high impedance-grounding configuration is designed to operate during grid-connected mode to minimize the generator damage during ground faults. An electronic switching mechanism is provided to identify the islanded mode of operation. This switching operation strategy will modify the grounding system to low-impedance configuration during islanded-mode of operation of the SBDG to ensure the steadfast operation of the overcurrent protection (OCP) relays. In addition, the schematic diagram of the proposed grounding configuration has been presented and discussed to ensure the safe decay of the generator field current during the ground faults in the generator zone while the generator has been isolated from the grid. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive grounding scheme to ensure the fast operation of inverse OCP and to limit the fault energy dissipation level inside the SBDG to a safe level by maintaining appropriate grounding scheme during different operating modes.","PeriodicalId":115239,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131956469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the purpose of analyzing the photovoltaic penetration effects in a low voltage distribution network related with harmonic distortion, the network was modified changing the energy distributed resources by photovoltaic systems. Five scenarios of photovoltaic penetration are proposed, in all of them, the position of the photovoltaic systems is conserved, and the power of the systems varies in 1%, 5%, 15%, 30% and 50% with respect to the MV/LV transformer rating. The network was simulated with OpenDSS in combination with Python, in order to dynamically evaluate the harmonic distortion.","PeriodicalId":115239,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129204346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Commonly, inverse time-delay overcurrent relay and distance protection relays have been used for power system protection against overcurrent incidences. However, the performance of these relays is not reliable for wind farm protection due to dynamic behavior of wind farms during harsh wind speed variations. A microprocessor-based differential protection relays (MDPR) with extensive communication capability may be used to tackle the effect of wind speed variation on protective relays. Nonetheless, implementing several MDPR in a large-scale wind farm could be extremely costly and in the event of communication failure, the relay would fail to operate during fault incidence. Therefore, in this research a cost-effective and more reliable differential protection relay is designed in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and is proposed as an alternative protection scheme for wind farms. The performance of the proposed FPGA-based digital differential protection scheme (FPGA-DDPS) is verified in the lab environment using DE2-115 FPGA board equipped with Cyclone IV E (EP4CE115F29C7). The experimental results show that the proposed FPGA-DDPR can successfully detects fault locations, trips the internal faults and even faults with extremely high resistance, while ignores the external fault. Thus, the proposed FPGA-DDPR protection scheme would be a cost-effective alternative to MDPRs.","PeriodicalId":115239,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129250648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the present study was the development and functional optimization of new tribocharger design consisting of an assembly of six cylinders, made of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), that can rotate at variable speed and be inclined at a certain angle with respect to the horizontal plane. The performances of the triboelectric charger were evaluated by measuring the charge per mass ratio of the granules collected at the outlet of the device. A first set of experiments involved eight granular polymers, size 2 mm to 6 mm, originating from waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE). The polymers could be arranged in a triboelectric series with respect to the amount of charge acquired in contact to the PVC cylinders. A second set of experiments were carried out with Polystyrene (PS) granules and enabled the choice of the limits of variation of the two factors that were expected to affect the tribocharging: the inclination of the 6-cylinder assembly and its rotation speed. Finally, design of experiments methodology was used for modeling and optimization of the process. The best results were obtained for high rotation speeds and low inclination angles.","PeriodicalId":115239,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121155372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among all types of electricity generation, offshore wind power has gradually progressed and become the focus of renewable energy development in various countries. According to the current policy, offshore Taoyuan, Miaoli, Changhua, and Yunlin were selected as installation sites for offshore wind farms. In addition, seaside distribution substations were constructed to serve as connection points for offshore wind farms. Buses with a voltage of 161 kV were connected to the network in centralized, evenly decentralized, and load rate settings. First, the maximum grid-integration capacity of the system, identified without the addition of additional lines and on the basis of N-1 accidents, was compared with the plans and objectives of Taiwan Power Company for 2025. The simulation results indicated that if no additional transmission line is added, congestion occurs in regional transmission lines, which limits the grid-integration capacity of offshore wind power farms, thereby failing to meet the goal of achieving 5.5 GW of offshore wind power capacity set by the government for 2025. In this study, simulation was conducted in Changhua by using three search methods for installing transmission lines to determine the optimal point for adding additional transmission lines, thereby resolving the problem of congestion in regional transmission lines and improving the grid-connection capacity. Simulation results revealed that the addition of three transmission lines meets the goal set by the government as well as resolves line congestion. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the three search methods were compared. The comparison results may facilitate the integration of offshore wind farms into the power system in Taiwan and serve as reference for system installation and improvement.","PeriodicalId":115239,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115969041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Load transfer is essential for distribution networks to keep continuous operating after the occurrence of a fault. However, conventional load transfer schemes can cause more significant power loss. In this paper, the soft normally-open points (SNOP) is introduced to solve this problem in a better way. An online load transfer scheme is put forward, taking both the load to be transferred and the voltage requirement of the healthy feeders into consideration. First, the relationship between the power at each line terminal and the voltage profile of the feeder is studied. On this basis, an optimal power distribution scheme is discussed. Finally, considering the security of healthy feeders, an online load transfer criterion is put forward. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme works well in holding the maximum load capacity online.","PeriodicalId":115239,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131266099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study aimed at evaluating the factors that affect the roughness of the plasma treated samples. The alteration of surface aspect after each treatment was clearly visible with the naked eye, and the changes were confirmed by measurements carried out with a portable roughness meter (Surftest SJ-210) and a digital microscope (Keyence VHX-7000). (. The roughness of the PP samples increased from Ra = 0.06 µm and Rq = 0.08 µm to as much as Ra =0.245 µm and Rq = 0.308 µm. These increases were highly dependent on the inter-electrode distance (10.5 to 13.5 mm), the treatment time (5 to 20 min), and the configuration of the DBD cell, i.e. the number (one or two) and the thickness (4 mm or 5 mm) of the glass dielectric barriers.","PeriodicalId":115239,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116518849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Beside using photo-diodes, the luminance decay can be predicted with the help of the electrical characteristics of the OLED. Analysis of the impedance revealed a strong correlation between the luminance and the impedance time constant. As a result, the time constant is chosen as the main feature to track OLED degradation. The evolution of this latter is exponentially modelled through time at different stress levels using the design of experiments (DoE) methodology. Simultaneously, an exponential relation between the luminance and this time constant is selected, enabling the luminance degradation prediction through time. This method is an accurate novel solution for luminance tracking in particular and the OLED degradation in general with a total prediction error of 2%.","PeriodicalId":115239,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133513883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The VAR support provided by inverter based distributed generators (IDG) and soft open points (SOP) devices is emerge as a potential solution for aforementioned problems. Therefore, a multi-stage coordination Volt/VAR control (VVC) with conservation voltage reduction (CVR) methodology incorporating IDG and SOP devices has been proposed in this paper. The proposed methodology includes three different stages namely; day-ahead scheduling stage, inner- day control stage, and real-time dispatch stage. In the day-ahead scheduling stage, a coordination optimisation model considering traditional VVC devices, IDG and SOP has been established; in the inner day control stage, a rolling optimisation control model based on model predictive control (MPC) is built, to reduce the influence of the predicted RES forecasted deviations; in the real-time dispatch stage, voltage violations occurred due to sudden change in generation/load are mitigated by regulating the reactive powers of IDG and SOP. To validate the developed scheme, a real time co-simulation framework using real time digital simulator (RTDS) and MATLAB-GAMS interface has been built. The proposed scheme has been tested and validated on a well-known 33 bus distribution system. The test results demonstrate the significance of the proposed scheme on volt/VAR control problems.","PeriodicalId":115239,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132191259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
