Although electrostatic precipitators are widely used as air pollution prevention facilities because of their low differential pressure and high dust collection efficiency, ozone generated during discharge can be harmful to the human body. In this study, we developed a compact electrostatic precipitator that combines a DC corona discharge module that generates an extremely small amount of ozone using a dielectric barrier effect and a particle collection module with large specific surface area. As a fundamental experiment, when the polypropylene film was coated on the ground electrode of the discharging device, the ozone concentration was reduced by up to 75%. This dielectric barrier effect suppressed the ozone concentration of the electrostatic precipitator introduced in this study to less than 10 ppb. In addition, the present device removes all dusts of more than 1 μm from fine dust, which is very harmful to human body. The methodology is based on solving the parameters of the equivalent circuit of integrated topologies. The goal is to find a general equation to calculate the PFC inductance, thus making the design of integrated power converters easier, especially when operating with a universal input voltage. To validate the design, a driver for LED luminary of 46.1 V and 575 mA is implemented. The prototype shows a high power factor (PF) of 0.98 and small THD of 13.5%. The major objective of this paper was to demonstrate that the use of a high-speed camera for recording particle trajectories could be instrumental in refining the understanding of the complex physical phenomena that occur in these electrostatic devices and in improving their operating conditions, based on valid numerical simulation results. The experiments were carried out with spherical conductive particles, using a roll-type corona-electrostatic separator. The particles trajectories were recorded using a high speed-camera at acquisition frame rate of 200 fps. The electrical field computation and the resolution of the differential equation of motion of the particles under the action of electrical and mechanical forces exerted on them enabled the prediction of the outcome of the separation process. The study was carried out for particles of different sizes, for different voltages and for different electrode positions. The successful mission of Cubesats require reliable operation of electrical power system (EPS) that powers all the other subsystems and payloads. Several studies have shown that EPS failure has been one of the main contributors for the Cubesat mission failure. The main objective of this paper is to enhance the fault-tolerance capability of Cubesats by proposing a new EPS architecture which introduces independent converters for maximum power point tracking operation of photovoltaic (PV) panels. This is possible by using gallium nitride field-effect transistors to reduce the converter footprint. Also, single inductor-based N-1 redundant converters, for generation and load-side, are proposed to provide uninterrupted operation. In addition to the battery charge and the Vehicle-to-Grid functions (V2G), the reactive power can be compensated according to an established reactive power reference. A three-phase bidirectional power factor correction (PFC) with a DC link is connected to an isolated DC/DC bidirectional converter is utilized in the topology. The virtual flux control algorithm used in assigning the amount of the injected reactive power is presented in this paper. The required mitigation for this functionality does not require any additional hardware, and it can be implemented on the existing electric vehicles with only a firmware update. Smart grids and Nearly Zero Energy Buildings are among key technologies towards more efficient and sustainable power systems. The present work is part of a project for the implementation of a smart grid connecting energy efficient buildings in the historical center of an Italian city. In this work, two public buildings are considered. First, the energy consumption of the buildings has been analyzed. Then, the refurbishment of the buildings, efficient thermal systems with heat pumps, local photovoltaic generation, cogeneration and electrical mobility infrastructure have been designed. Also, the possibility of connection of a multi-vector smart grid is investigated. However, their life expectancy and reliability can be severely affected by the ripple in the capacitor current that can cause increased thermal stresses. Further, the switching of the power electronics switches and the presence of harmonic components can increase the ripple in the capacitor current worsening the life expectancy. This paper proposes the use of a shunt active filter to maintain an almost constant dc-current in the capacitor and hence to mitigate the events that can cause the capacitor life expectancy to reduce. This filter reduces the ripple current irrespective of the frequency spectrum. The design principle and the resulting operating condition have also been derived. This EV charger comprises of BLTPBC as a front-end power factor correction (PFC) converter followed by a high efficiency synchronous FBLLC converter for DC-DC conversion. The PFC TPBLB is operated in continuous inductor conduction mode at fixed frequency, while the control of synchronous FBLLC converter is performed using pulse frequency modulation (PFM). The performance of this EV charger is deeply analysed during steady state and transient conditions by a developed proto-type and are discussed and presented. A lightning current is characterized by the parameters like current peak value (Im), time-taken by the current to reach Im (tm), maximum rise rate of the lightning current (di/dt)max (steepness), and charge transferred at the point of contact of the lightning strike (Q). Using the CBC functions, the lightning electromagnetic fields (LEMFs) are calculated to compute the LIOV using a coupling model. Since the choice of CBC function plays an important role in LIOV computation, the present work studies its effect on the computed LIOV. As a preliminary study two functions: Heidler’s and NCBC functions were examined. This algorithm uses a Mamdani fuzzy logic in the determination of the measurement noise covariance which is needed in the implementation of the unscented Kalman filter (UKF). By doing so, we can achieve better accuracy and shorter computation time in the detection of fault when it is compared with the stand alone UKF estimation method. To show the effectiveness of this algorithm, a fault detection design based on the proposed approach is developed for an inverted pendulum system.
